Tala develops her artifacts and magic while preparing a Guild caravan for the journey from Alefast to Bandfast. Her bond with a knife deepens, her storage item becomes Kit, and the dimensional predator Terry becomes a conditional companion. After training with powerful allies, she is abducted by giant ravens and survives with Terry's help. She refuses an unknown woman's offer to clear her debts in exchange for permanent subordinate soul service, discovers that wild magic wells can permanently alter creatures, and returns to the caravan. In Bandfast, Tala faces Guild review and added costs from her disappearance. Holly rebuilds her limbs and torso with always-active inscriptions, reveals that she is an Archon, and confirms Tala's blood construct as an Archon Star. Tala ends stronger but still indebted, with internal inscription work unfinished and instructions to strengthen a star without forming more soul bonds.

Previously: Tala is established as a dimensional mage working with the Caravaner's Guild and developing as an immaterial guide. Trent is a trusted caravan defensive mage and adviser, while the powerful Grediv guides her development from a distance. Renix remains Trent's mageling and works within the same caravan circle. Tala also has several specialized contacts outside that mentorship: Lyn supports her Guild work, Holly handles her inscriptions, and Adam provides hand-to-hand instruction. Brand combines caravan cooking with membership in the Order of the Harvest, while Artia is another Order contact whose household deals in artifacts. Atrexia is an established caravan mage. These relationships place Tala within overlapping networks of Guild service, magical education, physical training, artifact work, and harvest expertise. She enters the new volume with professional obligations already in place and with allies able to advise her, although her unusual abilities still require further control and study.

Tala spends her remaining time near Alefast gathering ending berries and preparing cargo capacity for the Caravaner's Guild. She feeds raw power into her unusual storage item, which enlarges and organizes itself, and places blood-made Archon Stars into her artifact knife. The resulting bond lets her power and summon the knife at a distance, although the effort causes serious strain. The ending-tree grove proves hazardous even through her iron salve, but she secures a large harvest and trades some of it to Artia's household for artifact research, a magic comb, and a water-producing incorporator. Tala names the responsive storage space Kit. A dimensional bird that has been shadowing her kills a group of woodsmen who intended to exploit her, and Tala names the creature Terry. He behaves intelligently, changes size, travels through space, and protects her, but she has no dependable control over him. By the end of this stage, Tala has converted a dangerous harvest into useful knowledge and equipment while gaining two powerful, poorly understood assets in Kit and Terry.

Tala prepares to leave Alefast with Trent, Renix, and a caravan carrying twenty cargo slots under her power. She receives self-repairing travel clothes from an anonymous benefactor. Grediv examines her possessions and explains that the knife is soul-bound through an Archon Star, while Kit and her clothing are magic-bound. He warns that damage to a soul-bound object can harm her gate and that further bonding is dangerous before she becomes much stronger. Tala then helps Grediv fight an adult mountain cyclops. The creature nearly kills her and consumes all her stored ending-berry protection before Grediv destroys it. In payment, Grediv gives her a large magical library, although advanced volumes remain closed to anyone below Archon level. Kit continues adapting to Tala's needs and resists another person's attempt to open it. Adam begins her hand-to-hand training, and a young kinetic mage formerly trained by Grediv joins the caravan. Before departure, Tala concentrates her ending berries into juice, the master sergeant apologizes for challenging her cargo work, and she confirms that Terry is secretly following the caravan.

On the road, a senior air-focused mage warns that partly eaten magical creatures may signal a larger hunter near the caravan. Tala continues training with Adam and Ashin while studying how her equipment is bound. She makes a much stronger Archon Star, but the attempt drains nearly all her reserves. The young kinetic mage hunts magical bovines and arranges a vast supply of meat and jerky for her, while Adam cautions that his combat magic makes him an unsafe sparring partner until her fundamentals improve. Tala combines her tunic and trousers into one regenerating garment and tests an artifact hammer that redirects force. A full strike shatters a rock and drives fragments into her eyes, though her healing inscriptions restore her sight. Trent identifies the hammer and warns her to treat artifacts with greater care. Tala then witnesses a distant battle between four apparent human Archons and a vastly powerful nonhuman being; one human seems to die before the creature retreats. Confronted with powers far beyond her, Tala resolves to grow stronger. She also reaches an agreement with Terry: he may remain with her if he stays small near people and does not kill humans or their animals without permission.

Tala learns to extend her knife into a heated cutting form and uses the demanding transformation to train her gate. The senior air-focused mage identifies Terry as a terror-bird hatchling and helps plan a collar that can admit him safely to Bandfast. Tala's new partnership becomes known within the caravan, though Trent remains cautious. She and Grediv's former mageling repair their awkward relationship, exchange magical ideas, and spar under Adam's supervision. Tala's defenses injure his hand, convincing Adam that she needs a fighting style designed around her unusual protections. The two young mages begin a more trusting study partnership, although Grediv's former student continues avoiding his own Archon-Star work. Tala also reveals that her family imposed large debts on her and sent her into magical training to repay them, after which she ended contact with them. Terry seizes and bonds himself to a specialized growth and escort collar before Tala has finished buying it. Trent settles the dispute with the seller for four gold ounces. Soon afterward, Tala falls asleep on a wagon roof and wakes as a giant magical raven carries her toward the mountains.

Tala fights the raven carrying her and survives a devastating fall through the combined protection of her inscriptions, iron salve, and remaining ending-berry power. Stranded in snowy mountains, she kills several more giant ravens with gravity magic, her transforming knife, and the repeating hammer. Terry arrives in an enormous form and destroys the final attacker. While Tala harvests useful material from the bodies, an unnamed woman of overwhelming power confronts her. The woman recognizes Tala's Archon Stars and offers to pay her debts plus a fortune if Tala accepts a permanent soul bond as her subordinate. Tala refuses. The woman effortlessly restrains both Tala and Terry, heals Tala's injuries, and departs. Terry then carries Tala toward the caravan. Along the way, Tala discovers a hidden source of lightning power that alters nearby creatures. Eight lightning terror birds attack, but Tala and Terry defeat them together. Tala concludes that Terry holds immense internal power despite having no gate and may have gained abilities from such places. They finally catch the caravan, ending Tala's isolation but leaving the nature of the wild power sources unresolved.

Back with the caravan, Tala accepts that careless sleeping arrangements contributed to her abduction. Trent assures her that her soul-bound knife is not a phylactery, because it cannot anchor her soul after death, but he and the senior caravan mage firmly warn her against forming any more soul bonds before reaching Archon status. Trent has received guidance from Grediv for beginning his own advancement, while the senior mage finally reads a long-ignored letter from their mentor. The group explains that wild magic wells permanently grant abilities to creatures and are usually lethal to humans. Tala then creates another blood Archon Star in only an hour, evidence that surviving the mountain battles greatly increased her magical flow. The caravan reaches Bandfast with Terry admitted under the collar's distance-sensitive tether. Lyn reports that Tala's disappearance forced emergency cargo arrangements, added about one gold ounce to her costs, and requires a senior Guild meeting before she takes another contract. With the journey complete but its consequences unresolved, Holly brings Tala directly to her workshop to resume inscription work.

Holly redesigns Tala's defenses around her improved magical flow, using an automated inscriber to place dense, always-active gold workings throughout her arms, legs, and torso. Tala commits most of her available money to the treatment and endures extreme pain as the machine works through bone and soft tissue, even requiring her heart to stop briefly during the torso procedure. She emerges with stronger, continuously active defenses and regeneration, while retaining coordinated movement and gaining access to her hand-based magic through either arm. Holly then drops her concealed aura and reveals that she is an Archon. After examining Tala's blood-made construct, she confirms that it is a genuine Archon Star and accepts that Tala might eventually qualify for Archon consideration. Her advice matches the other warnings: Tala must build a properly powered star and form no additional soul bonds. The book closes with Tala at Lyn's home, physically much stronger and reunited with Terry. Her organ inscriptions remain to be completed after further study. Guild review, family and professional debts, Terry's unexplained changes, combat training, and artifact research all remain active concerns as Tala prepares for the next stage of advancement.

Tala may eventually qualify for Archon consideration, but she must first make a properly powered star and avoid all further soul bonds. Her external inscription upgrade is complete, while nightly work on her organs still awaits study. Adam's tailored combat project, Tala's family and Guild debts, whether magic wells altered Terry and the nature of his abilities, and her planned research into transferring harvested power all remain open.
