A reformed confidence trickster who has become the respectable, successful Postmaster of Ankh-Morpork, and who is quietly bored to distraction by honest routine. Restless and hungry for the old thrill of risk, he is manoeuvred by Lord Vetinari toward a new and larger challenge: the ailing Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork and its Mint. His talent for confidence, in every sense, is exactly what the job demands.

The calm, calculating ruler of Ankh-Morpork, who has decided that the city's money and its antiquated bank need reform. He steers Moist toward the bank with his usual quiet inevitability, confident that a former swindler is the right person to modernize the nation's finances.

Moist's sharp, chain-smoking fiancee, who runs a trust devoted to freeing golems. Blunt and formidable, she leaves early in the story on an expedition far from the city to recover golems rumoured to lie buried in an ancient land.

The elderly, shrewd, and frail chairwoman of the Royal Bank, and the widow who married into the powerful Lavish banking family. Distrustful of her grasping relatives and fond of her small dog, she takes a calculating interest in Moist and in the bank's future.

The bank's rigidly precise chief cashier, a humourless man who has never in his life made an accounting error and who reveres gold as the only true basis of money. Devoted utterly to correctness and to the ledger, he regards Moist's ideas about paper money as something close to blasphemy.

An ambitious and cold member of the Lavish family who believes the bank is rightfully his and resents any outsider given control of it. Calculating and vain, he schemes to remove Moist and seize the bank for himself, nursing a private, growing fixation with power and with Lord Vetinari in particular.

Cosmo's sister, a loud, self-regarding member of the Lavish family who considers herself a fashionable and formidable figure and joins in the family's effort to force Moist out of the bank.

Appears from the start

Topsy Lavish's small, elderly, much-indulged dog, dressed and pampered and disliked by the rest of the family. Through the terms of his mistress's arrangements, this unlikely animal becomes central to the question of who really controls the Royal Bank.

A nervous, obsessive member of the Lavish household who has built an elaborate machine of glass tubes and flowing water in the bank's cellar, a working model that he believes mirrors the flow of money through the city's economy.

A meek, gifted engraver and forger whom Moist takes under his wing to design the new banknotes. Timid and easily led, he has extraordinary skill with pen and plate that Moist means to turn to legitimate use.

A disreputable old rogue posing as a travelling priest, with ill-fitting false teeth and a long memory. He recognizes Moist from their shared criminal past and sets out to blackmail him by threatening to expose who the respectable new banker used to be.

Appears from the start

A large golem who works at the Post Office and has begun, through exposure to the people around her, to develop a distinct personality and a devotion to Moist. She follows him into the affairs of the bank.
