Mark of the Fool

By J.M. Clarke

The first entry in the Mark of the Fool series introduces Alex Roth, a young orphan supporting his younger sister Selina, on the day he discovers he bears the Fool's mark, a hero's brand that quietly disrupts his combat and spellcasting instead of empowering him. To escape the priests who would press him into a dangerous and unwanted role, Alex flees with Selina and his friend Theresa through an unstable dungeon known as the Cave of the Traveler, using the mark's odd gift for learning ordinary skills to survive giant spiders and unpredictable portal magic. Along the way, Alex concludes that the official history of the Fool's mark and the monsters plaguing his homeland conceals a suppressed truth, which he intends to investigate once he reaches the distant city of Generasi.
