In short (whole book)
After Claygon awakens as a person, Alex reveals to Drestra, Cedric, and Hart that he is Uldar's missing Fool, creating a secret alliance against the Ravener and possible church interference. He builds a living eld staff, buys and restores Mermaid's Cakes as a family home, develops a powerful core golem with Taraka Shale, and helps the heroes grow stronger. Training campaigns in the Hells prepare his circle for a disguised raid on a greater demon's palace, where they steal the Traveler's phone and survive a battle that kills their armored mercenary and an iron greater demon. The phone and coded journal identify the Traveler as Hannah Kim, an Earth-born Saint of Ulrich who protected an earlier Fool. Hannah's summoned spirit reveals that the Fool mark was altered after its creation and that removing the change destroyed her partner's soul. She grants Alex more of her cross-world power and departs, while the Ravener detects his new status, breaks protocol, and contacts an unknown ancient presence.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Alex built a life in Generasi as a student mage, summoner, and crafter while secretly bearing Uldar's Fool mark. Theresa is his partner, Selina his younger sister, and Claygon the golem he created with Selina. Chancellor Baelin mentors him, while Professor Jules tries to keep his increasingly ambitious work within reasonable safety limits. Alex's wider circle includes the mages Khalik, Thundar, Isolde, and the tracker Grimloch. In Thameland, Cedric, Drestra, and Hart serve as Uldar's Chosen, Sage, and Champion. The recurring Ravener produces dungeons and monsters, and its recent behavior suggests that it is escalating against people connected to dungeon cores. Alex has concealed his place as the missing fifth hero because the Fool's imposed role would strip him of freedom and because he seeks a way to end the Ravener's cycle rather than merely survive it. His investigation also reaches toward the mysterious Traveler. At the start of this volume, his identity remains dangerous if priests or Thameish authorities learn it, and the heroes do not yet know that the ally beside them is the Fool.
Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)
Claygon awakens after his physical evolution, retaining his earlier memories and gaining an independent mind. He communicates with Alex through their link and in writing, calls Alex his father, and must begin learning language, restraint, and ordinary social meaning. His quick readiness to defend Alex makes that education urgent. Drestra privately confronts Alex with evidence that he left Thameland when the Ravener returned. Alex confirms that he is the Fool and explains why he fled rather than enter the hero system unprepared. Drestra accepts his reasoning and agrees not to report him. Together they tell Cedric and Hart. Cedric initially strikes Alex out of anger and hurt, prompting Claygon to attack, but the confrontation is stopped. Hart had already inferred the truth from Alex's unusual combat habits. After Alex recounts his history, Cedric apologizes and the four heroes reconcile. They form a secret alliance. The heroes will remain in Thameland to face escalating dungeon threats and investigate the church, while Alex and Baelin pursue the Traveler and leads in the lower planes. Alex also promises to help Cedric, Drestra, and Hart become stronger.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
Baelin agrees to train the heroes and proposes supervised campaigns in the Hells. Professor Jules confirms that Claygon is a rare new mind and recommends systematic education and a device that will let him speak aloud. Selina welcomes Claygon as family and becomes one of his teachers. She also continues studying her fire affinity and asks for enough training to defend herself, though Alex will not allow her on dangerous expeditions yet. Seeking more room and financial security for the household, Alex uses Claygon's awakening as evidence of his crafting ability. Master crafter Taraka Shale promotes him to Junior Crafter after a negotiation that raises his pay. Across from her workshop, Alex discovers the neglected Mermaid's Cakes property. Its last worker, Troy, explains how the current owner ruined the bakery, abused him, and sold unsafe food. Alex finds that the building itself remains sound beneath the filth. He uses its violations and repair costs to bargain the owner down from an inflated price, signs an agreement to buy the bakery and townhouse, hires Troy on better terms, and closes the business for restoration.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
An eld tree gives Alex a living branch for a new staff. Before he can craft it, he needs dungeon-core essence and commercial backing. Baelin also sets a deadline for the first Hell campaign: while Baelin attacks a demon lord, Alex's group will infiltrate the fortress and kill the lord's three sons. Alex, Khalik, Theresa, Claygon, Brutus, and Rip raid a Ravener dungeon. Khalik shapes a narrow tunnel toward the core while the others draw the spawn outside, allowing Rip to seize it before the dungeon can react. The party escapes, breaks down the core, and divides its essence. Khalik then helps Alex turn his idea into a stronger business proposal. Taraka accepts a partnership to build an advanced golem using Alex's core method. Alex negotiates an equal profit arrangement and they establish the Roth-Shale Supergolem Crafting Project. Her large advance clears his debt and finances the purchase of Mermaid's Cakes. Alex, Theresa, and Selina begin planning a shared home, working bakery, and basement laboratory, though the new venture still depends on a dangerous and limited supply of dungeon cores.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
Alex cleans the bakery and begins crafting the eld branch into a living, expandable staff. He combines dungeon-core essence with summoning, force, blood, flight, enhancement, and mana-draining effects, then carefully lets the branch absorb the prepared core. Professor Jules moves him into advanced magic-item instruction after judging that his work has outgrown the introductory course. While the staff develops, Thundar asks his friends for help approaching his instructor Kohana. Their date reveals incompatible beliefs and troubling treatment of her carnivorous pet, so Thundar decides not to continue the relationship. Isolde, meanwhile, acknowledges an interest in Cedric but sees political barriers between a Rhinean noble and a hero without comparable status. The eld staff matures successfully. It has its own awareness, stores and amplifies magic, and lets Alex route spells through its controls. Most importantly, he can use it to summon several creatures at once without the Fool mark's usual disruption. Its support and defensive effects also strengthen Claygon and the wider party, giving Alex a major new tool just before the campaign in the Hells.
Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)
The Saint of Uldar grows alienated from Cedric, Drestra, and Hart as they spend more time with Generasi's mages. Carey joins his field force while hiding evidence-driven doubts about Uldar. Meanwhile, Baelin teaches Alex's combined party how outsiders and their domains work, then equips the group with emergency spellmarks for its assault on a fear-demon fortress. The party enters the Hells while Baelin draws the demon lord away. A terror field attacks their judgment, but they reach the fortress and begin a stealthy infiltration. Traps and guards turn it into a running battle. After locating the three demon sons, Khalik opens an unexpected breach into their fortified chamber. Hart kills one son and the party quickly brings down a second. The last son uses magical laughter, possession, and false claims that the escape portal has fallen. Several companions are carried to safety by their spellmarks, leaving Alex, Hart, Thundar, and Claygon in the chamber. Alex detects the deception. Thundar, concealed behind an illusionary duplicate, blinds and cripples the son before killing him with the demon's own weapon. Baelin returns with the father's severed head, destroys the remaining resistance, and brings everyone home alive.
Story so far - through chapter 66 (this book)
Baelin debriefs the Hell raid rather than treating survival as proof that every decision was sound. Thundar's method of acknowledging intrusive thoughts and repeating grounding statements becomes a model defense against attacks on the mind. The group identifies failures in scouting, trap preparation, visibility, and coordination that must be corrected before Alex seeks the Traveler's trail without Baelin's direct protection. Alex begins strengthening the heroes. Cedric and Drestra study new magic, while Hart undergoes a dangerous life-enforcement treatment. After repeated failures that Cedric heals, Alex stabilizes the process. Continued training nearly triples Hart's strength and improves his speed and toughness. The renovated Mermaid's Cakes becomes a working bakery, family home, and laboratory. Alex builds Claygon a durable speaker box, giving him an audible voice and the ability to reproduce music. Alex and Taraka also activate their dungeon-core-powered iron golem. It is stronger and more agile than a standard model but has no mind. Claygon challenges Taraka's assumptions about golems as tools and later tells Alex he is relieved the new construct is not conscious. Alex then achieves third-tier general spellcasting and turns his attention toward Planar Doorway.
Story so far - through chapter 75 (this book)
The mission for the Traveler's information is moved forward, so Baelin gathers his own powerful cabal for a diversion against an abyssal knight. Alex's class first undertakes another Hell assignment in a lightless, freezing domain whose wrath field magnifies anger. Grimloch guides the invisible, rope-linked team toward a relic that sustains the supernatural darkness through sacrifice. Alex prepares a delayed chaos bomb because an ordinary attack would reveal the team too soon. Grimloch launches it, destroying the relic and its defenders, but the surrounding chaos makes the blast far larger than expected. Everyone survives. The retreat fails when a demon collides with Drestra, exposing the party to a pursuing horde. Drestra responds by abandoning her human disguise and becoming a red dragon. Her fear, breath weapons, flight, illusions, and magic open a path to the extraction point. Back on the material plane, she explains that her adoptive mother taught her to assume human shape and that she kept her nature secret as an emergency advantage. The group accepts her disclosure and credits it with saving them, strengthening their trust before they must act farther beyond Baelin's protection.
Story so far - through chapter 83 (this book)
Baelin identifies the next objective: a greater demon keeps the sought Traveler information in a palace inside a shifting planar labyrinth. Direct attack is too dangerous, travel and teleportation there are unreliable, and the realm's mania field magnifies emotion. Because the demon admits entertainers to his parties, Alex plans to enter with a hired performance troupe and search the palace under cover. Theresa and Alex agree that she will remain home with Selina and Brutus rather than risk leaving the household without either adult. Thundar volunteers because he has resisted other emotional fields. Rip joins as a scout. At the mobile Whetstone Tavern, Alex recruits a tattoo-bound former king, a half-orc precision thrower, the fugitive Spirit Killer, and an armored pallid elf. Alex trusts their useful abilities but continues assessing their limits and possible disloyalty. Planar Doorway is meant to be Alex's emergency escape, yet after two weeks he has mastered only a small portion of it. Then Baelin learns the gala is in two days rather than two weeks. Alex chooses to proceed if Baelin can occupy the powers most likely to interfere.
Story so far - through chapter 89 (this book)
Alex disguises the recruits as an entertainer troupe and prepares reinforced costumes, supplies, maps, and two reserve fighters. Alex, Thundar, Rip, the Spirit Killer, the former king, and the half-orc enter as the visible performers. Claygon and the armored elf receive marks that can summon them if the mission turns into a battle. The mania field destabilizes most of the team as soon as they enter the labyrinth, and demonic beasts attack at the crossroads. The troupe defeats them, follows Baelin's changing map, and reaches the greater demon's capital and palace. Its host keeps damaged mortals as entertainment and receives the troupe alongside two dangerous greater-demon guests. Alex preserves their cover when the metallic guest demands a fatal duel, redirecting the host's interest toward a reenactment of his victories. The palace archivist finally gives the investigation a concrete target. A historical saint escaped a battle with the host but left behind a small rectangular object marked with a silver apple and lantern. Alex concludes that this trophy may unlock or decode the Traveler's book and begins planning how to reach the host's collection.
Story so far - through chapter 95 (this book)
The troupe's flattering performance wins the host's provisional approval. Alex secures limited cooperation from a rival greater demon, then divides the team. He, Rip, and the Spirit Killer follow the host's trophy tour under invisibility, while Thundar's group remains in the ballroom. At the same time, Baelin abandons stalled negotiations with the abyssal knight and begins his cabal's assault on the city. The attack draws the host away from the trophy room. The Spirit Killer kills its guards with self-injuring hellfire, and the infiltrators defeat another ambush inside. Alex finds the marked rectangle displayed beside the Traveler's lantern, enclosed above lava behind a trap that his mana senses cannot detect. He drops the enclosure into the lava so its mechanical defenses exhaust themselves, then retrieves the object with magic. Contact gives him visions of other worlds and a technologically advanced city that stirs a personal sense of recognition, though the meaning remains unclear. After defeating a patrol and the servant pursuing them, Alex has the trophy in hand and brings the troupe together for its escape.
Story so far - through chapter 100 (this book)
The escape becomes a battle when the machine-like greater demon demands the stolen trophy and proposes an alliance against the host. The rival greater demon arrives hoping to profit from both sides. Alex summons Claygon with his recovered war spear, and Claygon kills her. The troupe then holds off her forces while the former king's manifested beasts, Claygon, the Spirit Killer, and Alex attack the iron demon. The iron demon detonates its own core and later turns its control of metal against the armored pallid elf. The mercenary continues fighting as his armor crushes and kills him, helping cripple the enemy. With the half-orc's explosive stone opening its arm and the Spirit Killer severing a leg, Alex forces an incomplete Planar Doorway into the demon's core and destroys it from within. He then teleports the survivors and their fallen companion out of the palace and sends a chaos bomb back through its corridors. Baelin seals the demon city while his cabal continues fighting. Alex's wounded party camps in the shifting labyrinth, still about a day from the portal. There he privately activates the recovered rectangular artifact with the unusual power he inherited from the Traveler.
Story so far - through chapter 104 (this book)
The artifact is a phone belonging to Hannah Kim. Its functions translate the Traveler's coded journal and reveal that Hannah came from Earth, was accidentally summoned elsewhere at fifteen, and retained the power to cross between worlds. She later settled in Ulrich, became known as the Traveler and a saint despite not worshipping Uldar, and concealed her abilities from the church. Hannah befriended the Fool of an earlier Ravener cycle. When that Fool controlled a dungeon core, priests tried to kill her. Hannah saved and hid her, and the two investigated after defeating the Ravener. Hannah shared her teleportation power with the Fool, but their later attempt to reverse a discovery about the Fool mark destroyed the Fool's soul. Hannah eventually died after another dungeon appeared in her sanctuary. Following Hannah's final instructions, Alex summons her sword and unexpectedly brings her spirit from the afterworld. She confirms that Alex received part of her power and warns of a covert church arm that protected the secret through surveillance and murder. Her central discovery is that the Fool mark was altered after its creation. Removing that alteration briefly succeeded for her partner, but the attempt ended in complete soul destruction.
Story so far - through chapter 105 (this book)
Hannah cannot identify the exact location of the earlier Fool's equipment, though she remembers a very cold imperial region. She directs Alex toward two stronger leads: the church's covert arm and the place where Uldar left the mortal world, which may provide access to his realm and answers about the altered Fool mark. The reason for the alteration and a safe means of removing it remain unknown. Before the afterworld draws her back, Hannah promises to answer Alex's prayers when she can and grants him a larger share of her cross-world power. She believes the blessing may eventually let him teleport without spellcraft, as her former partner did. She also agrees to try to carry a message to Alex's dead parents. Hannah then departs, leaving Alex with her phone, coded journal, sword, and strengthened power. Alex is still injured in the shifting Hell labyrinth with his surviving troupe and the armored mercenary's body. Baelin's wider battle continues behind them, and the robbed palace host begins searching for the thief. In Thameland, the Ravener prepares petrifying creatures against three perceived usurpers. After sensing Alex joined with Hannah's power, it breaks its own protocol and contacts an unidentified ancient presence.
How does it end? (ending)
Alex's troupe escapes the greater demon's palace with the Traveler's phone after killing the iron greater demon. The armored pallid elf dies enabling that victory, while Thundar, Rip, the Spirit Killer, the tattoo-bound former king, the half-orc stone-thrower, and Claygon survive. Baelin and his cabal remain behind in a larger battle, with the demon city sealed against escape. Alex's wounded group is still inside the shifting labyrinth and has not yet reached its portal home. The phone unlocks Hannah Kim's coded journal and reveals that she was the Traveler and Saint of Ulrich. Her summoned spirit confirms that Alex inherited part of her world-crossing power and gives him a greater share before returning to the afterworld. Alex now carries her phone, journal, sword, and blessing. He must investigate the church's covert arm and Uldar's mortal ascension site, while the earlier Fool's missing equipment remains another lead. The Fool mark's later alteration is established, but its purpose and any safe method of removal remain unknown. The Ravener responds to Alex's empowerment by departing from its normal protocol and contacting an unidentified ancient presence.
