In short (whole book)

Hal is displaced from Seattle into a world governed by levels, magic, and hostile Founders. Marked as a potential Founder, he escapes execution, frees Ashira and other prisoners, rescues a coblin clan, and accepts responsibility for people excluded by the ruling order. To win them a home, his party enters the sealed Coffin District. Hal nearly dies and returns bonded to a mana seed, becomes a Beastborn, befriends a mimic, and survives an internal Beast taking control. Beneath the district, he learns that the ruling Founder is an alternate version of himself and meets Hal 37, a dead predecessor whose soul seals a body-stealing entity. Hal releases 37, destroys the entity with the Beast's aid, restores the mana tree, and makes the Reaper permanently mortal. The completed contract gives Hal the district, where the coblins settle safely. He then allies with a dwarf clan and departs in a well-equipped caravan toward the Shiverglades to obtain another mana seed and found a refuge, while the ruling Founder continues hunting him.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

Hal awakens in an unfamiliar wilderness after witnessing an assassin kill a young man and use the body in a ritual that leaves a glowing mark on Hal's arm. His phone cannot connect to anything, local people cannot understand him, and villagers react to the mark with terror. A young huntress finds him, protects him from a search party, and helps him survive a monster attack that grants his first level. After a strange mushroom lets him understand the local language, she explains that the ruling Founder hunts marked outsiders. Soldiers soon capture Hal and condemn him to death. In prison, a horned keeper explains that Hal's mark may identify him as a potential Founder capable of creating a sanctum. Hal uses newly discovered magic to destroy the keeper's enslaving collar, nearly killing himself in the effort. He then refuses a poison offered as an escape from execution, kills a guard during the attempted transfer, and begins freeing prisoners. A political prisoner follows him through a hidden tunnel. Rangers kill the patrol waiting outside, and Hal reunites with Ashira and the ranger leader. By chapter 10, Hal is a wanted fugitive, his follower is revealed as a tiefling songwriter, and the rebels ask him to consider becoming the Founder they have prepared to support.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

The ranger network escorts Hal toward a refuge and explains that a mana seed could let him create a protected sanctum. Hal remains uncertain whether to accept that responsibility or seek a way home. A night attack separates him from the group, and a goblin defeats him. He awakens in a slave cave beside a coblin healer who saved his life and asks him to free the captive clan. Hal breaks loose, rescues a young coblin pack-bearer, and reunites with the ranger leader inside the cave. Rather than escape immediately, he commits to releasing the remaining prisoners. A stealthy coblin thief joins the effort, while an explosives-maker becomes the final required rescue. Once an alarm mobilizes the goblins, Hal coordinates the captives' retreat and uses dangerous new Beast Magic in the fighting. His Bomb Toss contributes to an armory blast that also kills some coblins, showing the cost of poorly controlled power. The explosives-maker places charges beneath the prison structure while Hal and the ranger hold the rear. The collapse destroys the goblin force and seals the main exit, and the ranger uses a powerful arrow to open a path to daylight. Hal reaches Novice level 10, but the survivors still need food, treatment, and a safe destination.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

After the cave's destruction, Hal organizes food and supplies for nearly 250 survivors, including many children. The coblins formally choose to follow him according to their own ethical code, take captured equipment, and help protect the vulnerable refugees. Hal appoints leaders and guides the large group toward a merchant-run sanctuary town. Along the way, they find a murdered resistance runner and a destroyed supply cache, evidence that the ruling order is suppressing opposition. The scattered rangers reunite with the refugees, while Hal's goal shifts toward building a refuge where peaceful peoples can live together. The sanctuary town admits the rescued children but refuses lodging to the coblins. Hal accepts a quest to secure them a lawful home and will not abandon them outside the walls. A horned tavernkeeper reveals that a sealed upper district may offer a solution: the Adventurers Guild grants ownership to anyone who completes the long-failed Coffin Contract by reopening and clearing it. The same tavernkeeper shows Hal an old rebel room and gives him a codex responsive to his mark. With the rebels' safe house burned and their supplies lost, Hal, the ranger leader, and their freed companion join the guild and take the contract as their route to both shelter and funding.

Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)

An experienced elf adventurer joins Hal's contract party and introduces a gnome merchant who equips him for mobile spell combat. The horned tavernkeeper becomes the fifth member at the sealed district entrance. Hal recognizes the barrier's markings through his codex, learns a Founder sigil called Rend, and destroys the barrier. The act exposes his nature to the elf adventurer and alerts the ruling Founder, who sends an archmage and elite pursuers westward. Inside the Coffin District, the party finds charcoal-like corpses from an apparent massacre and enters a region filled with shadow crawlers. Hal alone hears their accusing voices. Hundreds of the creatures trap the group inside a shop protected by a blood-painted symbol, forcing them into underground tunnels. There the party faces security constructs and a Shoggoth spore elite. Hal's disabling magic helps the others fight, but a lethal effect overwhelms Ashira's healing. To save him, the party uses the mana seed intended for the future sanctum. Near death, Hal encounters a Reaper who cannot compel his resistant soul onward. He returns to his body, accidentally pulling her with him, and chooses to merge with the seed's soul rather than consume it. The renewed power lets him restrain the elite, but his place between life and death remains unstable.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Empowered by the soul merged with his own, Hal develops a stronger chain spell and combines his ultimate with the dragoon's attack to kill the Shoggoth spore elite. The collapsing chamber scatters the party. During the fall, Hal completes the requirements for a rare class and chooses Beastborn, gaining the ability to combine monster essences into physical adaptations. Hal uses shadow limbs to save Ashira and guide them through root-filled caverns beneath the district. He learns to share resources and benefits through their bond, while the ranger leader, dragoon, and horned tavernkeeper search separately through the ruins. Hal rescues a small chest-like mimic from an aberration and discovers that empathy can provide essence without killing. By feeding and protecting the creature, he forms a voluntary family bond with it. Hal and Ashira reunite, establish a defensible route, and enter a sealed area opened by his Founder mark. Within are ruined growth chambers and an indoor forest that appears tied to artificial life. Wartlings surround Hal, but a new Founder sigil lets him override their distant controller and command them. He now has a plant-creature escort, while the complex's purpose, the corrupted mana tree, and the missing companions remain unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 61 (this book)

Hal uses the dominated wartlings to scout the artificial forest and help Ashira gather ingredients. Their control costs experience, so he tests their senses and abilities while treating them as protected creatures rather than expendable tools. Ashira teaches him alchemy, and a powerful tree ant becomes another temporary servant after Hal uses Dominate. The pair turn the controlled monsters against nearby threats and collect the materials needed for healing potions. The Reaper appears again and explains that Hal's return from death stranded her in the living world. When he asks for her name, a golden tether forms between them. It can make one of them corporeal while the other becomes ethereal, and it prevents her from moving far away. She saves Hal from an ambush with her scythe, and Ashira can see and recognize her, although their earlier connection is not explained. Hal completes his alchemy training and returns toward the underground complex with Ashira, the Reaper, the mimic, and the wartlings. Beyond a rune-marked maze, party communication finally reaches the badly injured ranger leader. The ranger, dragoon, and tavernkeeper have survived a stone golem, but the ranger needs extensive treatment. After recovering enough to move, the separated groups continue seeking a route to one another.

Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)

The ranger leader, dragoon, and horned tavernkeeper encounter a mature Shoggoth. The tavernkeeper stays behind to delay it and apparently dies, allowing the other two to escape through collapsing tunnels. They survive an underground fall but are critically injured. Hal and Ashira move toward them through the sealed complex, losing wartlings to shadow doubles along the way. When shadow creatures close on the injured pair, the dragoon reveals vine magic to hold them back. Hal forces a breach through the wall separating the groups, but accumulated Beastborn strain lets the Beast inside him seize his body. It destroys the shadow attackers, then turns toward his companions. Hal retains only limited control through his wartlings and his tether to the Reaper. Ashira, the ranger, the dragoon, the Reaper, the mimic, and the surviving wartlings fight to restrain him as the Beast's form and corrupting power intensify. Hal asks them to kill him before the transformation becomes permanent. A concealed effect in the ranger's arrow creates the opening he needs to regain Assimilation. Hal threatens to drain his own life rather than remain captive, forcing the Beast to submit. He returns to himself at critically low health, with the Beast now a conscious but controlled presence.

Story so far - through chapter 80 (this book)

After stabilizing, Hal explains Beastborn strain to the reunited party and gains a daily method to clear it before the Beast can take over. The companions accept the mimic as his ally and mourn the tavernkeeper. Hal also vows to find a permanent body for the tethered Reaper. The group returns to imprisoned shadow beings, who claim the ruling Founder used their kind to crush an uprising and that restoring the mana tree will send them home. The beings prove they know private information about Hal and reveal that the underground records use a cipher derived from his own childhood. They also identify Hal and the ruling Founder as alternate versions of the same person. Hal keeps this connection secret from his living companions. In exchange for release, the shadow sages provide knowledge of a lost western city where another mana seed may exist. Ashira breaks their wards, and the party continues toward a vault linked to the corrupted tree. A primordial flame totem cleanses corruption in Hal despite the Beast's resistance, granting him a blessing that breaks the crystals blocking the route. At the vault door, time stops for his companions. Hal and the Reaper enter alone and find an Earth-like study, infected roots, an ancient gate, and the corpse of a numbered alternate Hal whose soul remains bound to his Founder mark.

Story so far - through chapter 89 (this book)

The dead alternate, Hal 37, explains that he once led the mountain city and later rebelled against the ruling Founder. The ruler had weakened the district, unleashed shadow creatures, and finally released a body-stealing entity that destroyed minds as it moved between hosts. Hal 37 abandoned the rebellion to contain that greater threat, sealing it at the mana-tree roots and binding his soul to sustain the prison. He asks Hal to decide whether to maintain the failing seal or confront what lies inside. Hal chooses to release him and accepts his equipment. Hal 37 passes on, and the entity attacks. It possesses the Reaper, using her body and powers against Hal. Rather than kill her, Hal offers himself as a stronger host. Inside his mind, Hal and his internal Beast unite against the intruder and destroy its controlling consciousness. Hal then uses his daily strain-clearing ability to prevent the Beast from taking advantage of the aftermath. The Reaper is nearly dead, but the restored mana tree revives her and permanently gives her a mortal body. Hal unlocks the Oathforger class through his fulfilled commitments. His bond with the seed heals the tree, seals the eldritch gate, and destroys hostile monsters throughout the mountain while sparing creatures it judges harmless.

Story so far - through chapter 98 (this book)

Hal guides the newly mortal Reaper through hunger, emotion, clothing, and system prompts, while receiving new powers from the defeated entity and rewards for freeing Hal 37. After rejoining the party, he conceals Hal 37's true identity and his connection to the ruling Founder. The group exits the mountain through hidden tunnels, where a concealed dwarf smuggling clan surrounds them. Its leader recognizes Hal's genuine mark and offers shelter. The dwarves cannot trade freely in the city, so Hal proposes that they help build a new sanctum. The clan leader accepts in principle, provided the plan can support the clan economically. Hal demonstrates a mana shield, identifies the Shiverglades as the intended region, and agrees to direct trade without the city's bribes and intermediaries. The elf adventurer commits to creating a covert migration route for marginalized settlers. Back inside the mountain city, Hal uses a shifting disguise to submit the completed Coffin Contract. The ruling Founder's archmage detains Hal's group and attempts magical coercion, but the Adventurers Guild matron expels the agent. The guild confirms the party's payment, advancement, anonymity protections, and Hal's ownership of the former Coffin District, while reserving the dead tavernkeeper's share for any heirs.

Story so far - through chapter 104 (this book)

The Coffin Contract makes Hal an Apprentice-ranked adventurer and grants him the Coffin District, substantial payment, and protected guild lodging. In disguise, he meets the city watch captain, who confirms that the rescued coblins may legally settle in the district. Hal is still subject to standing arrest orders, so his remaining city work must stay discreet. The elf adventurer and Reaper attempt to recruit the gnome merchant, but the Reaper knocks him unconscious after he refuses. Meanwhile, an oracle and six followers trail Hal and the dwarven clan leader. Rangers capture them without violence. The oracle claims mana-related abilities and asks Hal for protection; he provisionally accepts the group but remains suspicious of their timely appearance. At the ranger camp, three coblin fighters also win places in the expedition. Hal then leads more than 220 coblins into the mountain city, appoints their own representatives, and gives them the Coffin District. The city's barrier admits them safely. The tiefling songwriter remains behind to help the coblins and city watch oversee the refuge, while Hal plans to return for anyone who later wants to move to his sanctum. He has now chosen refuge-building over a return to Earth or the pursuit of power alone.

Story so far - through chapter 109 (this book)

At the dwarf camp, Hal discovers that the elf adventurer and Reaper abducted the gnome merchant. The merchant offers to join after closing his shop, but Hal refuses to accept a decision made under fear and promises to return him home. He reprimands the Reaper and explains that expedient coercion would make him resemble the ruler he opposes. She apologizes, and Hal accepts while requiring better judgment in the future. Hal pools funds and loot with his companions to buy the dwarf clan's arms, armor, tools, and settlement stock. The dwarven clan leader also procures a much larger list of supplies through the black market and prepares ten house-like wagons with draft birds. During a final city visit, Hal protects the fallen tavernkeeper's reputation, checks the rapidly rebuilding Coffin District, and secretly takes an animated photograph linking Hal 37, the tavernkeeper, Ashira, and the guild matron. Its meaning remains unknown. Before dawn, nearly six dozen dwarves and Hal's companions leave in a ten-wagon caravan toward the planned sanctum. A lonely young traveler becomes Hal's friend during the journey. After the city is behind them, Hal discovers the gnome merchant and four coblins hidden beneath a wagon floor. The Reaper enabled their stowaway plan. Hal allows all five to stay, and no pursuit appears during the caravan's opening hours.

How does it end? (ending)

Hal leaves the mountain city before dawn with Ashira, the ranger leader, the elf adventurer, the dragoon, the now-mortal Reaper, the mimic companion, the dwarven clan leader, nearly six dozen dwarves, an oracle and her followers, and other recruits. Their ten-wagon caravan carries tools, arms, materials, and supplies toward the Shiverglades, where Hal hopes to find a mana seed and establish a sanctum. The gnome merchant and four coblins are discovered beneath a wagon as stowaways, and Hal allows them to stay. The tiefling songwriter remains behind to help more than 220 coblins and some refugees rebuild the Coffin District under the city watch's protection. The ruling Founder and archmage remain active threats, and Hal continues to hide his connection to the ruler. His internal Beast is controlled but still conscious. A photograph linking Hal 37, Ashira, the fallen tavernkeeper, and the guild matron leaves the old rebel circle unexplained. No pursuit appears during the caravan's first hours.
