In short (whole book)

Joe Bishop and Skippy preserve Earth by making a damaged, power-limited Sentinel look like an autonomous guardian, while planted evidence drives the Maxolhx toward internal conflict. To stop a hostile Elder AI from waking more Sentinels, Valkyrie raids Ardu for communications nodes and secures enough additional devices to jam the wormhole network. A staged AI discovery, Jates's apparent betrayal, and Scorandum's apparent deal with the Maxolhx then provoke the desired civil war and conceal Skippy's infiltration of the Rindhalu station at Flortradex. Bilby pilots the extraction, and Smythe's team retrieves both Skippy and the hostile AI. The captive has planned for this outcome, however. During a wormhole transit it sends a distress signal, the Elders answer, and Skippy reports that they are returning to the galaxy.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Joe Bishop and the Elder AI Skippy led humanity's special missions aboard Valkyrie, with Flying Dutchman and the Mavericks among their principal partners. Earth remained caught between the Maxolhx and Rindhalu power blocs, while the human team also maintained consequential ties with the Jeraptha. The reactivation of Elder technology left humanity facing dangers that conventional fleets could not reliably oppose. Bishop's command therefore depended on Skippy's exceptional access to ancient systems, careful secrecy, and alliances that UNEF could not fully trust or publicly explain.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

A Jeraptha Ethics and Compliance Office operation uses a fabricated Sentinel appearance to clear Build-A-Gung without a fleet battle. At Earth, Bishop and Skippy conduct a larger deterrence. The damaged Sentinel pushes away the dangerous Jupiter cloud while Star Team Alpha boards Admiral Reichert's flagship. Bishop then publicly blames Maxolhx Red Section for waking the Sentinels, although the accusation is a deliberate cover for the suspected involvement of another Elder AI. Reichert receives implanted memories that support the false conspiracy and deepen disorder inside the Maxolhx command structure. Bishop forces the surrounding senior-species fleets to abandon ships and leave the system. When several Maxolhx crews resist, Skippy renders their weapons useless and Bishop demonstrates control without deliberately killing them. Earth gains a respite, but its apparent guardian is depleted, difficult to direct, and dependent on Skippy. UNEF nevertheless authorizes Valkyrie to depart, requiring the team to preserve the fiction that the Sentinel can protect Earth by itself.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

The damaged Sentinel develops limited awareness and needs companionship, so Skippy leaves his submind Grumpy with it. A rogue Maxolhx fleet correctly suspects that Earth's defense weakens when Skippy departs and launches a surprise attack. Skippy has secretly remained nearby, however, and directs the Sentinel to reverse the bombardment and disable the attackers. Chang lets the survivors leave under a public claim that the guardian acted autonomously, preserving the deterrent while feeding instability within the Hegemony. Admiral Urkan returns to power but chooses consolidation and negotiation rather than immediate war against the rebels. Skippy then determines that another signal could use damaged wormhole networks to wake the Sentinels again. He proposes using Elder communications nodes to create interference while leaving ordinary wormhole travel intact. UNEF approves a mission under the cover story that Maxolhx Red Section remains responsible. As humanity retreats from formal alliances, Bishop privately asks Chotek to preserve useful relationships and begins searching for enough nodes to secure the network.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

Skippy traces the original wake-up transmission to a Rindhalu warship and concludes that a hostile Elder AI may be manipulating research from within Rindhalu territory. Simms narrows the likely sites through patterns in staffing, supplies, and military traffic. Meanwhile, Urkan delays action against the Maxolhx rebels and considers provoking Elder-weapon exchanges that he expects humanity to contain. At Jaguar Base, Jates asks the Alien Legion to support expansion by his reformist Kristang faction. Perkins refuses because the faction has not secured lasting reform in its existing occupation, leaving his loyalty in question. Bishop reveals the Elder AI threat to a small planning group and accepts a high-risk attempt to make the enemy expose its location. Adams is promoted and brought into the compartmented mission, while Perkins vouches that Jates will still do his duty. A special-operations team begins covert deployments without informing UNEF Command, whose communications Bishop considers unsafe. At the same time, Ardu emerges as a possible source of the communications nodes needed to block another signal.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Valkyrie begins the Ardu raid by sending a stealth dropship through the wormhole formed by a departing Maxolhx supply vessel. An unexpected pulse destroys the craft's jump capability and cuts it off from Skippy, but Smythe elects to continue. Star Team Alpha discovers that rogue Maxolhx special forces are already scavenging the neglected base. The team recovers the Elder communications nodes, suffers serious injuries, and divides so the package and wounded can escape. Smythe is isolated during the fighting, where a limited suit AI called Helpy restores crucial armor functions. Valkyrie retrieves the damaged dropship, then enters Ardu's atmosphere for the seven operators left behind. Tactical nuclear strikes disrupt the ground defenses, and Skippy extends a suspensor field to pull the final falling operator aboard. Reed recovers the tumbling ship, while Skippy manipulates the obsolete defense network into destroying hostile platforms, a Maxolhx cruiser, and ultimately itself. Valkyrie escapes with the nodes and erases the evidence that could reveal how Skippy compromised the defenses.

Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)

Tests prove that communications nodes can create a resonance that scrambles future wake-up signals without closing the wormhole network, but full coverage requires more devices. At Begrum, Valkyrie stops a Thuranin bombardment and coerces the local rulers into surrendering museum artifacts without attacking civilians. Despite damaged and counterfeit items, the usable nodes complete the blocking network. A separate Mavericks expedition follows Jates to a hidden cavern on a Kristang world. The supposed node cache is false, but Nert discovers a heavy cylinder that appears to hold an active Elder AI. Jates then disables the team's powered armor and communications, takes the canister, and uses it to seize control of the dropship. He bargains with Scorandum, whose Ethics and Compliance Office ship departs with him and the artifact. Boston recovers after the apparent AI releases its systems, but Perkins and the ground team remain stranded until the destroyer can return. The human team has completed its defense against another network signal, yet a seemingly independent Elder intelligence is now moving beyond its control.

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

The completed network interference blocks the hostile Elder AI's next attempt to wake the Sentinels, warning it that someone has intervened. Skippy correlates Rindhalu security and logistics data and identifies Flortradex as a station built around the core of an Elder starship. Scorandum appears to offer the newly recovered canister to Maxolhx rebels, but Commodore Iliath seizes it for the Hegemony. The transfer helps ignite a Maxolhx civil war while Valkyrie enters Rindhalu territory and surveys Flortradex. Skippy compromises a Rindhalu cruiser to obtain station data, then appears to be infected by hostile code and captured after ejecting in a pod. Bishop subsequently reveals the full deception. The cavern canister was dead, Jates's betrayal was staged, and Scorandum, Perkins, Simms, Smythe, Adams, and Bishop were participants. The apparent system failures were planted by Skippy. The operation exploited enemy surveillance to manufacture civil war and let Skippy enter Flortradex under the appearance of capture. Bilby establishes covert contact with him, and Valkyrie receives the signal to begin extraction.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Bilby takes Valkyrie through the Rindhalu blockade and disables two heavy cruisers. Acting on Skippy's instructions, he commands an Elder wormhole to open through Flortradex, cutting away the fragment of Elder starship that contains both Skippy and the hostile AI. Skippy suppresses the captive's communications and neutralizes nearby station security, allowing Smythe's team to recover both canisters. Valkyrie escapes with the hostile intelligence contained aboard ship. Skippy reports that it found signs of other Elder master-control AIs, although there is no proof that any are active. The apparent victory is immediately overturned during a later wormhole transit. An energy surge gives the captive enough access to send a signal, and Skippy realizes that it deliberately arranged its own capture so it could make this transmission. The Elders answer the distress call. Skippy confirms that they are returning to the galaxy, leaving Bishop's team with a larger crisis while Earth still depends on the damaged Sentinel's fragile deterrent and the Maxolhx remain divided by the engineered civil war.

How does it end? (ending)

The apparent Elder AI recovered by the Mavericks was a dead canister made to look active. Jates, Scorandum, Perkins, Simms, Smythe, Adams, and Bishop were cooperating in a compartmented deception that drew Maxolhx attention, triggered civil war, and gave Skippy a path into Flortradex. Bilby opens the covert route for the recovery operation and pilots Valkyrie through the Rindhalu blockade. An Elder wormhole removes the starship fragment holding Skippy and the hostile AI from the station, and Smythe's team brings both canisters aboard. Skippy contains the enemy intelligence and Valkyrie escapes. During the next wormhole transit, the captive AI exploits the energy surge to transmit the call for which it engineered its own capture. The Elders respond and are returning. Earth still relies on the damaged Sentinel bluff, the Maxolhx remain divided, and the hostile AI is physically contained but has already created a greater threat.
