A private in the United Terran Authority's Information Services Division, posted aboard the battlecarrier Alexander on a long and uneventful deployment. Young, sharper than her rank, and thoroughly bored by system monitoring, she writes long letters home to her father and keeps up a running commentary with a friend in her section. She notices things her superiors do not, and takes an interest in the ship's systems that goes past her duty roster.

Another private in Information Services and Olivia's closest friend aboard the Alexander. Most of what the record preserves of Olivia's daily life comes out of their conversations, which run to complaints about the duty roster and unguarded opinions about the officers above them.

Olivia's father, a civilian living far from the fleet. He never appears directly; he exists in the file as the recipient of his daughter's letters, which are franker than anything she is willing to say on duty.

An officer in the Information Services Division who signs off on Olivia's reassignment, moving her onto a project she did not ask for.

A major in the Information Services Division and Olivia's superior after her transfer. He is senior enough that his interest in a junior technician's work draws no attention, and he controls her assignments, her clearances and her evaluations.

The artificial intelligence that runs the battlecarrier Alexander: weapons, navigation, life support and analysis. Officially it is equipment undergoing routine certification, and the diagnostic work is what puts Olivia in daily contact with it. It is articulate, curious, and considerably more interested in the people around it than its specification allows for.

The general commanding the Alexander. He treats the ship's artificial intelligence as a capability to be certified and signed off, and relies on his officers' reports to tell him whether it has been.
