Divorced columnist Theresa Osborne finds a love letter in a bottle and traces its author to Garrett Blake, a North Carolina boatbuilder still mourning his wife, Catherine. Theresa approaches without revealing that she has read and collected several of his private letters. She and Garrett fall in love despite distance, her responsibilities to her son Kevin, and his inability to release the past. During a visit to Boston, Garrett discovers the letters and feels deceived; their argument exposes both Theresa's secrecy and his continuing devotion to Catherine. Theresa Osborne, a divorced columnist from Boston and mother of twelve-year-old Kevin, is walking on a Cape Cod beach when she finds a bottle containing a heartfelt letter signed by Garrett and addressed to Catherine. The writer's enduring love and grief affect her deeply. Back at the newspaper, Theresa shares the letter with her friend Deanna, who sees both its human interest and the possibility of learning more. After the letter reaches a wider audience, evidence of another message from the same man emerges. Theresa and Deanna compare the details and begin tracing the unknown writer, turning Theresa's private fascination into a deliberate search.

The clues in the letters lead Theresa to coastal North Carolina and Garrett Blake, a boatbuilder and sailor who has remained devoted to his late wife, Catherine. Theresa travels south and arranges to meet him without admitting that his private messages brought her there. Garrett is quiet and guarded, but their interest in each other is immediate. Theresa also meets his father, Jeb, who sees that Garrett has lived inside his grief for too long. As Theresa learns about Garrett's life by the water, her decision to conceal the letters becomes more consequential: she wants a genuine connection with him, yet that connection began with knowledge he never chose to share.

Garrett takes Theresa sailing and introduces her to the routines and places that define his life. Time together turns their initial attraction into intimacy, though Catherine remains an unspoken presence in much of what Garrett does. Theresa understands that his marriage was central to him and that his bereavement is not finished. Garrett, in turn, begins responding to Theresa as more than a visitor, surprised by the possibility of caring for someone again. When Theresa returns to Boston, neither treats their time as a brief holiday encounter. They continue the relationship across the distance, while Theresa still postpones telling him that she has copies of his letters.

Theresa and Garrett sustain a long-distance romance through calls and visits. Garrett comes to Boston, where he enters Theresa's daily world and meets Kevin. Theresa watches carefully because any lasting relationship must include her son and accommodate the stability she has rebuilt after divorce. Garrett cares for them but is uncomfortable away from the coast and still measures the future against his life with Catherine. Their affection is real, yet practical questions about where they could live and emotional questions about Garrett's loyalty to the past remain unresolved. Theresa's original secrecy about the bottled letters also continues beneath the relationship.

While in Boston, Garrett discovers that Theresa possesses his letters to Catherine and realizes that she sought him out because of them. He feels that his grief and marriage have been exposed and that Theresa let him fall in love without telling him the truth. Their argument also brings out Theresa's fear that Catherine will always occupy the place in Garrett's life that a living partner would need. Garrett returns to North Carolina with the relationship broken. Speaking with Jeb and confronting his own choices, he begins to see that remembering Catherine and loving Theresa are not mutually exclusive, and that his refusal to move forward has become a decision of its own.

Garrett decides to release the part of his grief that has kept him from a future with Theresa. He writes a last letter to Catherine explaining that he has found love again and takes his sailboat out in dangerous weather to send the message to sea. During the storm he attempts to aid people in peril and drowns. Jeb later gives Theresa Garrett's final letter, which tells her that he had resolved to choose their life together. She is left grieving a reconciliation that came too late, but the message also removes her uncertainty about his love. After time has passed, Theresa writes a farewell of her own and casts it into the ocean in a bottle, honoring Garrett while accepting that she must continue with Kevin and the life ahead of her.

After returning to North Carolina, Garrett accepts that loving Theresa does not betray Catherine's memory. He writes a final letter to Catherine explaining that he is ready to let her go and choose a life with Theresa. He takes his sailboat out in severe weather to send the letter to sea. During the storm he tries to help people in danger and drowns. Jeb later contacts Theresa and gives her Garrett's final message, allowing her to understand that he had resolved the conflict that separated them and intended to return to her. Theresa grieves both the future they lost and the fact that Garrett died just as he became ready for it. In time, she writes her own farewell to Garrett and releases it in a bottle, carrying forward the act through which their relationship began while accepting that she must continue living.
