In short (whole book)
In the welcoming community called Village, which has long taken in outcasts, a boy named Matty carries messages and travels safely through the surrounding Forest. He was raised by a wise blind man, Seer, the father of his old friend Kira, and the community is guided by Leader, a young man with pale eyes and the gift of seeing beyond. But Village is changing: through a mysterious Trade Mart run by the sinister Trademaster, people bargain away their better selves for shallow wants, growing selfish and cruel, until they vote to wall out all newcomers. As their hearts darken, the once-gentle Forest turns deadly and begins to attack travelers. Leader sends Matty to bring Kira to Village before the border closes. Returning through the now-lethal Forest with Kira, Matty discovers he has a rare gift for healing. When the poisoned Forest threatens to kill them, Matty pours out his life to heal the Forest itself, dying in the effort. His sacrifice cleanses the land and breaks the community's cruelty, and he is honored at last with a true name.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Earlier in the series: In a rigidly controlled community that had abolished memory, pain, color, and choice, a boy named Jonas was chosen to hold the society's suppressed memories. Learning the truth about his world, he fled with a baby to save its life and came at last to a gentler place. In a separate, harsh village, an orphaned girl named Kira, born with a twisted leg and gifted at weaving, uncovered the lies of her own community's rulers, was reunited with the blind father she had thought dead, and chose to stay and work for change; her scrappy young friend Matt was the boy who had helped her. Now Jonas leads a welcoming community called Village, the blind man lives there and has raised Matt, and Matt has grown into the messenger of this story.
Story so far - through chapter 1 (this book)
Matty lives in Village, a community founded to welcome outcasts and the wounded from crueler places, and works as its messenger, one of the few able to pass safely through the surrounding Forest. He was raised by Seer, the wise blind man who is Kira's father, and the community is led by Leader, a young man with pale eyes and a gift for seeing beyond the ordinary. Matty hopes to earn a true grown-up name for his work. But something is beginning to change in Village and in the Forest around it, and the openness that has always defined the community is starting to falter.
How does it end? (ending)
As Village grows cruel, corrupted by the bargains people make at Trade Mart, its people vote to seal the border against all newcomers, and the surrounding Forest turns malevolent, thickening and killing those who try to pass. Leader sends Matty on one last journey to fetch Kira before the closing. On the way back, the Forest attacks them savagely. Matty, who has recently discovered he can heal with his hands, realizes the only way to save Kira, and everyone who might still come to Village, is to heal the Forest and the poisoned land itself. He gives everything he has, pouring out his own life force into the ground. The healing succeeds: the Forest is cleansed, the corruption lifts, and the community's hardened hearts begin to soften. But the effort costs Matty his life, and he dies with Kira and Leader beside him. In recognition of his final act, he is given the true name he had always wanted, Healer. Village reopens, mourning the boy whose sacrifice restored it.
