Previously: Claire Danvers moved into Glass House with Eve Rosser, Shane Collins, and Michael Glass after discovering that vampires rule Morganville. Michael had been killed by a vampire but preserved by the house in a ghostlike state. Shane's father Frank then invaded with armed vampire hunters, whose killing of Brandon led the authorities to arrest and sentence Shane to death. Claire, Eve, and their allies stopped Frank's wider attack and saved Shane. To leave the house and join the rescue, Michael accepted Amelie's offer to transform him into a vampire. He is now physically free but must adjust to the change, while Eve and Shane struggle with what it means. Claire also accepted the protection of Amelie, Morganville's Founder. The book closes with Bishop's arrival threatening Amelie's rule and placing Claire's household at the front of a new conflict.

Claire's work with Myrnin produces a treatment that can restore some of his clarity, but it is not a permanent cure for the disease destroying vampire memory and self-control. Myrnin remains dangerous, the research must continue, and Claire is now too important to Amelie's plans to step away. Bishop is revealed as Amelie's father and asserts himself at Glass House with no respect for Amelie's arrangements. His arrival introduces a power older than the town's current order and leaves Claire and her friends facing a new invasion from within vampire society.
