Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Paul Beebe (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

A determined boy who lives with his grandparents on Pony Ranch. He dreams of taking part in the annual roundup and, with his sister, hopes to own the wild mare called the Phantom.

Maureen Beebe (Protagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

Paul's practical, equally horse-loving sister. She shares his plan to earn enough money for the Phantom and works beside him in caring for the ponies.

The Phantom (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A pale, elusive wild mare of Assateague Island, famous for repeatedly avoiding the roundup riders. Her speed and fierce attachment to freedom make her the pony Paul and Maureen most want to bring home.

Misty (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

The Phantom's young pinto filly, marked with patches of brown and white and still dependent on her mother when the roundup reaches them. Paul and Maureen name her Misty after seeing her on the island.

Clarence Beebe (Supporting)

Also known as Grandpa Beebe

First appears in chapter 4

Paul and Maureen's grandfather, an experienced Chincoteague horseman who runs Pony Ranch. Gruff but affectionate, he understands both the children's ambitions and the nature of wild ponies.

Ida Beebe (Supporting)

Also known as Grandma Beebe

First appears in chapter 4

Paul and Maureen's grandmother and the steady center of the Beebe household. She supports the children while keeping their excitement grounded in the daily work of the ranch.

Pied Piper (Minor)

First appears in chapter 3

The dominant stallion of the Phantom's wild band on Assateague. He guards the mares and foals and embodies the island life to which the Phantom belongs.
