Previously: On a planet where the Noise makes men's thoughts audible, Todd Hewitt fled his isolated all-male town and its dark secret and joined Viola, a silent girl who had crashed as the scout of an incoming settler fleet. Pursued across the wild country by the cold Mayor Prentiss, the pair reached the city of Haven only to see it surrender to Prentiss, who declared himself President. In the captured city Todd was made to labor over the enslaved native Spackle alongside Prentiss's son Davy, while Viola was drawn into the resistance, the Answer, led by the fierce healer Mistress Coyle. The regime, the Ask, and the Answer tore the city apart with attack and reprisal; Prentiss killed his own son Davy; and the abused Spackle finally rose in revolt just as the first ship of the settler convoy arrived. This book opens with all-out war breaking across the planet.
