In short (whole book)

After his bond to Kirstin is severed, Trent Embra enters the Moonlit Forest with the treacherous Martin Vane, survives its werecreatures, accepts a young bonded dog as his companion, kills Martin, and earns the Shadowhunter title while secretly carrying away a divine trace. Near Belrise he forms an unchartered party with Carrie Moss and Felicia. Their delve is manipulated by the trial keeper, forcing Trent through a corrupt fifth floor and a personal trial where he creates Moonlight Banishes Shadows and receives the soulbound swords Blood and Ash. Trent clears the altered trial and reunites with his companions. Carrie escapes Jace's coercive charter, while a disguised silver-haired rogue brings the party a gray sphere pursued by the Red Tiger Company. Trent keeps it, kills the company's archer in an ambush, and is rescued from the recruiter by Cullen. Cullen brings him authority from Lewis and confirms his next path lies west, which Trent chooses despite the open threats around him.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Trent Embra entered this world with missing memories and an uncertain Al'rashian identity. His violet eyes distinguish him from the gold- and silver-eyed Al'rashians he has encountered, while his rapid advancement and unusual status remain unexplained. His summons bond to Kirstin has now been severed, leaving him apart from her, Tersa, and Sergeant Cullen. Trent also lacks a deeper companion tied to his forgotten birthright.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

So far this book: Trent leaves Al'drossford for a wilderness quest and meets Martin Vane near Belrise. Martin poses as a guide while planning to rob him, and both are transported into the Moonlit Forest. After Martin attacks and abandons him, Trent studies the trial's moon-cursed beasts, develops liquid-silver weapons, and takes in a persistent young dog. The pair gain skills and survive escalating fights, but the trial's hunters' truce and Trent's inaccessible instincts point toward a past he cannot remember. Elsewhere, Tersa begins strict remedial training under Master Taylor. Cullen, Taylor, and the Dusk Tower master discover Trent is missing just as royal visitors restrict the response from Lewis. Seth's attempt to gain Al'drossford is checked by Lewis's authority, while Avery begins pursuing leverage for himself. Orion Embra travels toward Wallander on a rumor that Clan Embra may be working nearby. In the forest, Martin moves behind the exhausted and wounded Trent with hostile intent.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Trent survives Martin's ambush, heals, and is compelled to hunt the trucebreaker before the Moonlit Forest will release him. His dog is nearly killed during the growing campaign against werewolves, but Trent gives it a true name, which heals and awakens it. With help from a feathered beast seeking its own transformation, Trent finds Martin near the final guardian. Martin retreats into the greater dire bear's den, where Trent poisons and kills the guardian despite a broken arm, then kills Martin when the thief attacks him again. The perfect clear brings powerful armor, the Shadowhunter title, and a warning that trials are drawn to Trent. The keeper also entrusts him with a corrupting trace of divinity, which Trent seals in storage and plans to hide. He leaves the trial with the bonded creature as a continuing companion. Meanwhile, Orion learns that failed trials have released beasts around Wallander and that political violence is spreading through the region he must cross.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Near Belrise, Trent's awakened companion begins speaking in fragments and senses an old wound or absence in Trent's soul. Trent discovers that a crystal sword-key directs him west, then meets Carrie Moss, an academy warrior seeking a trap finder. The guild confirms Martin's death and rewards Trent for a completed world quest. Carrie is trapped in Jace's company charter, which controls his training and requires three gold to leave, but he initially conceals the full problem. After training together and attending a local festival, Carrie sees both Trent's combat ability and the significance rural Al'rashians place on his violet eyes. Trent learns the spear skill and brings Carrie into his party. Felicia, an academy Mage Apprentice who wants rare crafting materials, joins on equal shares as healer and mapper. The group enters Belrise's permanent trial and finds its familiar beginner layout transformed. Despite Carrie's and Felicia's concern, Trent leads them into the altered first floor.

Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)

The changed Belrise trial gives unusually generous and personalized rewards while pushing Trent's party through traps beyond the expected beginner challenge. Trent trains the bonded creature against beetles, equips Carrie, and insists Felicia develop offensive magic. Carrie gains agility and starts recovering confidence as a warrior, while Felicia reveals her half-elf identity and commits to learning decisive fire spells. The party clears the first guardian and survives a combined ant trap, a flood, and an underground lake. Trent nearly dies retrieving a submerged cache, but returns with equipment and skills divided among all four members. Felicia masters fire attacks, Carrie receives a mana-linked flail and its skill, and the bonded creature gains night sight. Their growing cooperation makes the delve more than a temporary arrangement. The trial's rewards still appear tailored to individual desires, leaving Trent convinced that an unseen authority is encouraging his progress and trying to influence who remains beside him.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

Felicia exposes the illegal restrictions in Carrie's charter, and both companions choose to continue beside Trent. The party defeats increasingly abnormal guardians until a sealed fourth-floor door separates Trent from the others. A small white spider reveals itself as the keeper and admits reshaping the trial to accelerate Trent's growth. Its tailored fifth-floor choice proves corrupting, incapacitates the keeper, and traps Trent with a lethal cursed foe. Killing it begins Trent's personal Shadowhunter trial. Trent is made to study and fight moon-cursed creatures while refining a sword form of his own. He selects paired short swords for the final test, defeats a werewolf guardian without access to his usual supplies, and names the new anti-cursed technique Moonlight Banishes Shadows.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Trent's personal trial carries him to a memorial valley, where a spectral guide from his forgotten life gives him the soulbound paired swords Blood and Ash. Back in Belrise's unstable trial, a separate spirit announces that the keeper is incapacitated. The spirit then explains that the unfinished changes could turn the site into a lethal dark trial, and Trent agrees to complete the fifth floor. He defeats groups of devouring fiends and the forces supporting a would-be replacement keeper. The trial confirms the clear and adds the new floor permanently. The spirit promises that the original keeper will recover and that the floor will be rebalanced. Trent rejoins his three companions - Carrie, Felicia, and the bonded creature, and the party stays inside during a temporary period of increased rewards.

Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)

The silver-haired rogue enters the reopened trial with two supposed allies, but they betray her after finding a gray sphere. She escapes to Trent's party and trades the disputed object for protection. Trent uses the safe-zone rules to drive off the Red Tiger recruiter and his archer, then keeps the sphere despite the continuing danger. During the same confrontation, Carrie invokes the three-gold exit clause and leaves Jace's coercive charter. Sergeant Gaffney prevents the dispute from becoming a fight in town. Jace is expected to retaliate, although Carrie asks Trent to spare the former party if a challenge comes. At the end of chapter 51, Carrie is free, Trent holds the sphere, and the conflicts with Jace and the Red Tiger Company remain unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Trent leaves the restored Belrise trial as a stronger Shadowhunter, carrying Blood and Ash, the technique Moonlight Banishes Shadows, and a gray sphere wanted by the Red Tiger Company. Cullen ends the company's immediate attack, drives off its surviving recruiter, confirms that Trent's crystal key leads to a western warrior's trial, and gives him a lieutenant emblem from Lewis. Trent commits to the dangerous western territories. Carrie is free of Jace's charter, and Felicia remains with the group, but neither has yet agreed to travel west. The bonded creature wants them both to join and distrusts the silver-haired rogue, who arrives at Trent's camp without becoming a party member. Jace's expected retaliation, the Red Tiger grievance, Seth and Avery's political schemes, Orion's search for Clan Embra, Trent's sealed divine trace, and the truth of Trent's lost past and missing companion remain unresolved.
