In short (whole book)

Fifteen-year-old mage Zorian Kazinski becomes trapped in a month-long time loop after Cyoria's Summer Festival is attacked. He hides his looping from Zach, the memory-damaged student to whom the cycle is anchored, and uses repeated months to develop combat, divination, formula, teleportation, and psychic skills. An alliance with the telepathic Aranea uncovers an invasion backed by Quatach-Ichl, a cult's plan to release a primordial, and a hostile third traveler. Zorian helps disrupt the invasion, saves Akoja, and banishes Quatach-Ichl to his phylactery, but the third traveler evades a trap and permanently destroys the Aranea. Zorian escapes pursuit by killing himself, returning with the next reset while carrying only their fragmented warning and an incomplete map.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

Zorian Kazinski returns to Cyoria for his third academy year as a newly certified First Circle mage. He wants to study magical-item design and escape his family's business expectations, but the academy assigns him to Xvim, a mentor who insists that he rebuild his basic mana shaping. Zorian also notices that his classmate Zach has acquired implausible knowledge, skill, and mana capacity since the previous year. Coordinated rats with exposed brains provide another unexplained sign that something is wrong in the city. His own training remains constrained by a small mana reserve and limited collection of spells. During the mandatory Summer Festival dance, an organized force bombards Cyoria and attacks with monsters and hostile mages. Zorian searches for Akoja and joins Zach, whose combat ability is far beyond that of an ordinary student. After they send Akoja toward safety, an invading lich defeats Zach and casts unfamiliar soul magic on both boys. Zorian loses consciousness with the city under attack.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Zorian wakes at the beginning of the same month with his memories and practiced magical skill intact. Leaving Cyoria before the festival does not free him, and death at the hands of a masked attacker also returns him to the starting point. He eventually accepts that he is trapped in a recurring monthly loop and begins using repeated cycles for research and training. A library job gives him access to book-finding divinations, though his study of the lich's archaic necromantic chant produces few answers. His anonymous warning about the invasion also fails to prevent another reset. Zach first disappears, then returns with his own memories damaged by the lich's spell. He tells Zorian that he has experienced more than two hundred iterations and believes he alone remembers them. Zorian conceals that he is also looping, suspects their souls became connected during the attack, and accepts Zach's offer of combat instruction while continuing a separate investigation.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

Zach teaches Zorian practical combat spells, while Ilsa and Nora Bull open paths into advanced shaping and spell formulas. Xvim also moves him from basic levitation drills into mana-sensing exercises. Zorian learns that he cannot match Zach's enormous mana reserve, so he concentrates on control, technical knowledge, divination, and reusable skills. Repeated encounters with the invasion show that its forces combine artillery, monsters, infiltrators, and control of Cyoria's defenses. Even the academy shelters prove vulnerable to a coordinated underground assault. Zorian later discovers that Zach's death can reset the month even when Zorian remains unharmed, strengthening his fear of a dangerous soul connection. Seeking more useful abilities, he joins Taiven's sewer expedition. A hidden psychic presence incapacitates the group but communicates with Zorian, who resists its sleep effect and carries everyone to safety. He then turns his efforts toward information gathering, mental defense, and finding a way out of the loop.

Story so far - through chapter 19 (this book)

After several short resets, Zorian brings Kirielle to Cyoria and builds a more stable household with landlady Imaya, Kyle Tveranov, and Kyle's daughter Canna. His teachers advance his mana sensing, divination, formulas, and resistance to mental magic. He also gives a police investigator a confidential warning about the planned attack. Kyle identifies the lich's spell as a likely interrupted soul meld but finds no ordinary bond between Zorian and Zach. The underground Aranea then reveal that Zorian is naturally empathic and psychically open. Their matriarch offers training and information in exchange for carrying a packet of her memories between resets. Zorian accepts after learning that the strange rats in Cyoria are psychic spies serving the invasion. Once the packet proves the agreement can cross cycles, Zorian and the matriarch become cautious allies. They conclude that fragments of Zorian's and Zach's souls may have fused and begin searching for a third time traveler connected to the invaders.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

Temple forecasters confirm that divination fails beyond the festival and that contact with spiritual beings has stopped, suggesting that the loop isolates the material world on an immense scale. Under Aranea instruction, Zorian learns mind-sense, controls his empathy, and uses psychic awareness in combat. The Aranea disrupt the invasion's opening bombardment, but attackers still enter Zach's mansion and appear to target him directly. Zach's confused references to events from other iterations also show that he is mixing memories between loops. Investigation of an invader-linked device then exposes the broader plan: the attackers intend to exploit the festival's planar conditions for mass demon summoning and use Cyoria's mana well to release a land-bound primordial. The loop blocks the demon element, leaving important conditions outside the cycle unknown. As the alliance undermines more of the invasion, Ilsa takes Zorian as her apprentice and teaches him broader magic, including teleportation. The allies decide to force the hidden traveler into the open by making the invasion fail visibly.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Zorian spreads warnings, equips the Aranea for long-distance coordination, and helps Taiven uncover a large underground invasion camp. The matriarch tells Zach that other loopers exist and recruits him for an ambush, though he still does not learn that Zorian is one of them. Kyle reveals his own necromantic studies, learns the loop secret, and gives Zorian a disc capable of banishing a lich to its phylactery. At the festival, a red-robed third traveler attacks Zach alongside Quatach-Ichl and an undead noble. Zorian saves Akoja, destroys the undead attacker, and banishes Quatach-Ichl. The third traveler uses a simulacrum to evade the trap, extracts the Aranea connection from Zach, and permanently destroys their settlement and souls. Their fragmented final warning says the loop is degrading and leaves part of an underground map. In the next cycle, the traveler hunts Zorian through soul perception. Zorian wounds him, escapes toward the mapped lake, and detonates himself to prevent capture. The reset restores Zorian, but the Aranea remain dead and the hostile traveler remains at large.

How does it end? (ending)

The Aranea, Zorian, and their contacts have weakened the invasion, exposed underground forces, and drawn attention from city, temple, and noble authorities, but the attack still reaches Zach at the festival dance. Zorian destroys an undead attacker threatening Akoja and uses Kyle Tveranov's disc to send Quatach-Ichl back to his phylactery rather than kill him. The red-robed third traveler uses a simulacrum to escape the planned ambush, learns about the Aranea, and destroys their settlement so completely that its members do not return after the reset. Zorian later wounds the pursuing necromancer and detonates himself to deny him access to his body. The next cycle restores Zorian, but the Aranea remain permanently dead. Zach is still the loop's anchor and still does not know Zorian shares the cycle. The loop is degrading, the third traveler is hunting other participants, the primordial plot remains unresolved, Quatach-Ichl survives through his phylactery, and Zorian still owes Kyle the preservation of his alchemical research.
