In short (whole book)
After the Cyoria Aranea vanish from every restart, Zorian leaves the city to study soul magic, telepathy, wards, and combat. He discovers that his loop marker is a flawed copy of Zach's, develops methods for carrying records across resets, and returns to investigate the invasion. His work uncovers a dimensional-gate network, a mansion that harvests souls, and a cult plan to sacrifice young shifters to release the primordial beneath Cyoria. Official action captures the mayor-necromancer but provokes an early release attempt and another reset. Zach then joins Zorian openly. A spirit explains that the loop is a temporary reproduction of the world meant for one traveler. The Aranea matriarch's recovered message identifies the Sovereign Gate as the likely exit, but its Guardian says another controller has already left and bars them. Zorian and Zach remain together inside the failing loop, seeking a way to save them both.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Zorian Kazinski discovered that he was reliving the same month in Cyoria. Zach Noveda was already trapped in the cycle, while a hostile third traveler aided the forces preparing to attack the city during its summer festival. Zorian developed innate telepathy and allied with the Aranea living beneath Cyoria. Their matriarch helped him investigate the loop and left him a sealed memory packet. By the start of this volume, the hostile traveler has removed the Cyoria Aranea from every new restart. Zorian retains the packet and his accumulated skills, but has lost his closest source of guidance. The loop itself may be deteriorating, and Zorian does not know whether the enemy has identified him or can threaten his family permanently.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
Zorian avoids Cyoria while testing whether the hostile traveler knows his identity. He travels, practices survival and mind magic, and settles near a northern dungeon town to pursue contacts with knowledge of souls. An isolated witch will help only if he obtains eggs from a deadly Grey Hunter, while other potential experts have vanished or died in a coordinated campaign. Zorian also acquires advanced ward-breaking instruction through a local merchant, although their attempt to penetrate a rival's safe ends in an explosive trap. After saving a transformation-alchemist from an undead assassination attempt, Zorian learns that foreign soul material is merging into him and that another construct is embedded even more deeply. He and the alchemist help defend a warrior-priest's temple from armed attackers. The priest identifies the construct as a marker that can serve as both a beacon and an identifier, but cannot remove it. He begins teaching Zorian basic soul protection. A search ritual detects only two matching markers over a vast area, supporting Zorian's suspicion that the second belongs to Zach without resolving the rival traveler's status.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Stolen records identify the local mayor as the illegal network's senior client and connect his operation to members of the World Dragon cult. Zorian survives another assassination attempt, deepens his soul training, and promises Kirielle that she can eventually accompany him to Cyoria. His first attempt to seek instruction from another Aranean web ends in betrayal: its telepaths overwhelm him and force him to trigger a reset. He responds by improving his escape anchor, constructing combat golems, and making his suicide safeguard activate if a mental assault incapacitates him. More cautious negotiations lead him to the River Navigators. Their matriarch trades instruction for magical work and telepathic relays, and their teacher helps Zorian build a mental shell that can detect, repair, and counter psychic attacks. Other webs offer knowledge on unacceptable terms, but the Filigree Sages leave open an exchange involving an expedition into the ruined Cyoria settlement. After Zorian kills a monster that destroyed another web's leadership, he receives the basics of deep mental scanning. He is now prepared to return to Cyoria with Kirielle, using his new abilities to investigate the invaders and their supporters.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Back in Cyoria, Zorian joins Taiven's dungeon-hunting team, maps abandoned invasion positions, and realizes the attackers have lost much of the foreknowledge once supplied by the rival looper. Kirielle befriends a shy young girl whose home has attracted telepathic rats. Zorian also confronts the limits of his memory as research and useful locations accumulate across restarts. Kyle examines Zorian's marker and concludes that it is a defective copy carrying Zach's identifying value. This explains why Zach's death resets Zorian while Zorian's own death does not reset Zach, and suggests Zorian entered the loop through an accident that cannot simply be repeated. Ilsa teaches Zorian to memorize the structure of written notebooks and recreate them after a reset, allowing him to preserve both investigations and Kyle's research. Zorian maps parts of the World Dragon cult's network and attempts deep scans on captured cultists, but his first effort destroys a prisoner's mind and yields little useful intelligence. The danger around Kirielle's new friend then becomes immediate: attackers kill both parents and take the child alive, leaving Zorian with a new abduction to investigate.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Zorian learns that the abducted girl is a cat shifter and traces her transfer through the cult, but cannot identify the leader who ordered her kept alive and unharmed. In a later restart he stops the original kidnapping team, only for the cult to seize a different young shifter. This proves that the ritual requires a shifter child rather than one particular victim. Xvim begins strengthening Zorian's mental defenses, while a wolf-shifter classmate explains the competing ways shifter communities preserve their identities. During the festival invasion, Zorian captures enemy mages and learns that the cult's primordial ritual centers on Cyoria's Hole. He also discovers a deeply buried time-dilation research facility that may relate to the loop. Quatach-Ichl, the invading lich who enforces the enemy's discipline, kills Zorian during reconnaissance. In later restarts Zorian builds a wider network of classmates and Aranean specialists. The specialists locate the lost settlement's treasury and memory records, while its warded research room remains unopened. Taiven finally confronts Zorian over the impossible breadth of his abilities. He tells her that repeated months account for his progress, giving him his first substantial human confidante in Cyoria.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Taiven provisionally accepts Zorian's explanation after comparing information with Kyle and begins helping him design repeatable training plans. The Filigree Sages later open the warded research room, but a hidden explosion and poison-gas trap destroy its contents and injure two wardbreakers. Zorian prevents further gas exposure. The Aranea matriarch's stored message is deteriorating, placing a deadline on Zorian's efforts to master memory packets. An invader officer's memories reveal that the festival attack is intended to weaken the state before a broader foreign invasion. Enemy forces travel through a chain of maintained dimensional gates, with Quatach-Ichl apparently sustaining the network. Zorian decides that disrupting a gate could cripple the operation. During the festival he diverts the underground base's defenders with dominated dungeon creatures, reaches the Cyoria-side portal, and passes through it. Destination wards reject his spiritual protections and close the gate behind him. On the far side, he finds an undead-filled mansion controlled by a necromancer allied with the invasion. The necromancer's wards suppress Zorian's prepared explosives and leave him facing capture by a soul-magic expert. Zorian escapes by activating a function of his marker that forces an early reset. The attempt confirms the gate's destination and gives him a target for future assaults, but the mansion's defenses remain intact.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
Zorian learns how high-ranking invaders authorize passage through the gate and sends controlled golems into the mansion. Their lack of souls lets them bypass part of its detection system. At the center, the mayor-necromancer reveals a vast soul well that extends its reach through the open portal and collects the dead from Cyoria during the invasion. Further study stabilizes the matriarch's packet only temporarily. Zorian tells Xvim about the loop after his advanced shaping becomes impossible to conceal. Xvim verifies Zorian's identity through academy records and predictions, then offers training in dimensionalism and mana sensing. His observations suggest a bounded time effect similar to a sealed time-dilation space, though astronomy finds no simple local boundary. Kyle confirms that the soul well exceeds his expertise. A reconnaissance visit to the mansion overwhelms him, and he asks Zorian not to burden later versions of him with the investigation or the grief it reawakens over his dead wife and teacher. Zorian agrees to preserve Kyle's research without drawing him back into the work. With the technical route exhausted, Zorian decides to bring the soul trap to the priesthood and seek official intervention.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
The warrior-priest verifies Zorian's evidence and organizes a combined state and Church assault on the mayor-necromancer's mansion. Zorian joins anonymously and disrupts the mind controlling a skeletal dragon. The necromancer eventually surrenders. Zorian and the priest remove a compulsion that prevented him from betraying the invasion, learning that he joined Quatach-Ichl in hope of restoring his dead wife. They also uncover the cult's plan to extract primordial essence from at least five young shifters and use it to bridge the prison beneath Cyoria. Arrests force the invaders into a premature release attempt, and the emergence of the primordial triggers another reset. Zach then confronts Zorian and becomes his open partner. A snake spirit explains that their world is a temporary reproduction created for one branded traveler, making their two brands an anomaly. Zorian recovers the Aranea matriarch's message, which identifies the Sovereign Gate as the probable exit and warns that the loop is failing. He and Zach reach the Gate, but its Guardian says a controller has already left and bars everyone else. They infer that the rival looper has claimed or altered the exit. Zorian and Zach remain trapped together and resolve to find a way out that saves them both.
How does it end? (ending)
The assault on the mayor-necromancer's mansion ends with his surrender. Zorian and the warrior-priest remove a compulsion blocking his testimony, exposing collaborators and the cult's use of shifter children to reach the primordial beneath Cyoria. The resulting arrests force the invaders to attempt the release early, and the emerging entity triggers a reset. Zach then confronts Zorian, confirms that the Aranea begin every month dead, and becomes his active partner. They learn that both carry loop brands even though the system was designed for one entrant. Zorian recovers the matriarch's final message and uses its credentials to reach the Sovereign Gate with Zach. The Guardian reports that a controller has already left and refuses them passage, suggesting that the rival looper has claimed or manipulated the exit. Zorian and Zach remain in a deteriorating recreated world, committed to escaping together. The invasion, the primordial, Quatach-Ichl's gate network, the missing Aranea, and the rival looper all remain unresolved.
