In short (whole book)
With only 52 iterations left, Zorian and Zach expand their alliance, master simulacrums and long-range gates, and begin collecting the five artifacts needed to reopen the Sovereign Gate. They recover the Orb of the First Emperor in Koth and learn to take the Imperial Ring from a desert ziggurat, while the Imperial Dagger remains in Eldemar's treasury and the Crown stays with Quatach-Ichl. A costly assault captures part of the invaders' gate and averts one iteration's attack on Cyoria. Silver Lake teaches dimensional magic, helps Zorian gain soul perception, and finds evidence that a primordial prison touches both the loop and reality. The missing noble heir is found soulless, leaving Red Robe's identity unresolved. In the final iteration, Quatach-Ichl helps raid the royal treasury, discovers the world's artificial nature, probes Xvim, and attempts a soul detonation. Zorian forces a restart in time, preserving what the loopers learned but leaving every key objective unfinished.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Zorian and Zach are trapped in a month-long recreated world that repeatedly resets. They retain knowledge between iterations, giving them years of training and investigation while everyone else returns to the same starting point. A hostile traveler known as Red Robe has already escaped by unknown means and interfered with Zach's memories, leaving open the question of who truly controls the loop. Zorian has become a skilled mind mage and works with the Aranea, while Zach supplies exceptional combat power and the resources attached to House Noveda. Their immediate outside threat is an attack on Cyoria involving foreign forces, the Cult of the World Dragon, and an imprisoned primordial. Zorian also protects his younger sister Kirielle and has begun drawing trusted teachers and companions toward the secret. The pair still lack a safe way to leave the loop and return to reality without destroying the original souls occupying their bodies.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
The Guardian of the Threshold gives Zorian and Zach a hard limit: the loop has power for only 52 more iterations, and reopening its barred exit requires five scattered key pieces. It also explains that ordinary copies cannot simply take over their real bodies without killing the original occupants. Zach may carry a real soul, but the evidence does not establish whether he or Red Robe was the original controller. The two loopers respond by cooperating more openly. They train under Xvim and Alannic, involve Kyle and Taiven, build funds, and prepare to preserve useful research across resets. Their first lead on Red Robe is an expelled noble heir whose skill as a fire mage and disappearance would be suspicious even without the deliberate gap in Zach's memory. Searches fail to locate him. Xvim and Alannic eventually demand the truth, then learn about the loop, the planned invasion, the child sacrifices, Sudimir's soul-harvesting scheme, and the attempt to release a primordial. Dangerous soul training lets Zorian activate his marker's key sense. The first artifact it identifies is the Crown of the Ecosian Empress, worn by Quatach-Ichl, the ancient lich supporting the invaders.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
During the attack beneath Cyoria, Zorian anchors a ward that helps Xvim, Alannic, and Zach injure Quatach-Ichl, but the lich escapes. At the ritual platform, Xvim dies protecting Zorian. Zorian breaks one red-robed participant's mental defenses, destabilizing the ritual and ending the iteration. The stolen memories reveal that the red robes mark the cult's inner circle, led locally by the head of the Mage Guild. Their plan is not merely to free the primordial but to enslave it during a dangerously brief binding window. In later iterations, the group uses a Black Room for extra training time, raids cultists, and searches restricted knowledge. Zorian, Zach, and Alannic recover the simulacrum spell, giving Zorian autonomous magical copies that share his soul and mana but may diverge if left active too long. An attempted royal-treasury infiltration confirms that the Imperial Dagger is another key piece, although the palace defenses and pursuit remain beyond them. Repeated investigations point toward additional artifacts in distant regions, so the loopers need long-range travel, stronger wardbreaking, and more dimensional expertise. Zach's marker also proves able to terminate an iteration when his soul or mind is subjected to dangerous tampering.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Zorian tests long-lived simulacrums and uses one to reach Koth, then joins Zach in opening a gate across the continent. The Silent Doorway Adepts demonstrate their own ancient gate ritual, while Xvim and other specialists study a captured invader gate. In Koth, Zorian finds his eldest brother leading a treasure hunt and learns that he too is a natural psychic. After hearing about the loop, the brother reveals that his expedition seeks the same lost imperial orb Zorian needs. Their party follows Zorian's marker through the Green Hell, survives a battle with an enormous many-headed guardian, and discovers that the apparent artifact is itself a portable hidden realm containing a ruined palace. Zorian's side recovers the Orb of the First Emperor, which remains with his brother while Zorian prepares for the attack beneath Cyoria. Back in Cyoria, the loopers capture Sudimir, whose interrogation exposes plans for destructive wraith weapons. They then lead a large assault on the Abassan base. The attack costs nearly half the force, but Zorian's simulacrum proposes extracting the inactive gate-stabilization frame rather than holding the site. The surviving attackers escape with it. Quatach-Ichl arrives too late, and the Abassan forces abandon Cyoria for that iteration, cancelling the expected invasion.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
The successful gate raid shifts attention toward lasting resources and relationships. Zach proves able to control the imperial orb almost instinctively, while Zorian's eldest brother offers to preserve research and build magical exchanges in Koth. Zorian begins reconsidering his resentment toward him, and the eldest brother confronts his failures toward Kirielle and their other brother. Taiven worries that Zorian's growing power will make their friendship unequal. They discuss his former romantic interest and try a date, but later agree that they remain friends and that any progress will vanish with the reset. The Silent Doorway Adepts receive a reliable Koth destination, reducing the loopers' dependence on family connections. When the orb is linked to the Sovereign Gate, the Guardian confirms it as a key and reveals a memory bank that persists between iterations inside the loop. It cannot survive the loop's destruction, so stored knowledge must still be relearned before escape. Across further restarts, Zorian and Zach improve infiltration, gate travel, and access to the orb's interior. They preserve the Grey Hunter's eggs and trade them to Silver Lake. In return, the immortal witch agrees to teach pocket-dimension creation, prepare a soul-perception potion, and examine the orb under limited conditions.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
Zorian and Zach gather the remaining ingredient for Silver Lake's soul-perception potion by fighting a soul-eating plant. The finished potion leaves Zorian unconscious for two days but grants the perception he believes he needs to solve the problem of returning to a body that already has a soul. Meanwhile, Alannic's investigation finds the expelled noble heir dead and without a soul from the first day of the iteration. The condition resembles earlier Aranea victims, yet it neither confirms nor completely rules out his connection to Red Robe. Zorian also mediates a confrontation between his eldest and middle brothers, exposing the eldest brother's broken promise to support the younger during his academy studies. Silver Lake becomes more receptive when Zorian reproduces secret evidence of their dealings from an earlier restart. She tests the loop claim at the primordial prison beneath Cyoria and finds changes consistent with the prison being the same object viewed from another reality. Her working conclusion is that it touches both the real world and the loop rather than being copied. The discovery suggests a possible escape route, but the required dimensional skill remains far beyond the group. Attention then turns to the Imperial Ring, reportedly held at the Ziggurat of the Sun, and to stealing an experimental airship capable of reaching it.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
Zorian, Zach, and their simulacrums seize the experimental airship after installing its missing parts and destroying a hidden safeguard that prevents takeoff. The damaged vessel still provides the speed needed for distant artifact searches. Their first attempt to negotiate access to the Ziggurat of the Sun fails, so they prepare a larger assault. At the same time, they plan an ambush against Quatach-Ichl and learn that permanently defeating him would require finding his phylactery. The lich instead approaches them in a human disguise and offers conversation. He explains the strategic purpose behind the invasion, reveals that his Crown multiplies his available mana, and trades information about divine blessings. Zorian and Zach decide to exploit this willingness to bargain across separate iterations while concealing the weakness of their position. With help from a desert-born classmate and regional contacts, they return to the ziggurat using mercenaries, golems, simulacrums, and a gate. Zorian compels the devil-wasp high priest to surrender the Imperial Ring, and the attackers escape with another recoverable key piece.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Zorian and Zach determine that the Imperial Ring grants soul perception and can place tracking marks on souls that persist across restarts, giving Zach a safe way to begin perceiving souls. They then recruit Quatach-Ichl to penetrate Eldemar's royal treasury. They promise him the Imperial Dagger and first choice of the remaining valuables, while planning to turn on him after the defenses are breached. The raid succeeds: Quatach-Ichl claims the dagger, Zorian studies the concealed main wardstone, and the trio loads other contents into the Orb of the First Emperor. A divine tether allows Eldemar's forces to pursue them until a gate to Zlotic breaks the connection. Quatach-Ichl then uses the loopers' behavior and the world's anomalies to infer that their surroundings are artificial. Xvim joins the planned confrontation from the orb, but the lich overwhelms his defenses and probes his memories. Zorian forces Quatach-Ichl out of Xvim's mind. The lich pretends to surrender the Crown and dagger, then attacks and detonates his own soul. Zorian activates the restart protocol before the blast can kill them. The reset erases Quatach-Ichl's discovery and all material gains from that iteration, but Zorian and Zach retain what they learned about the treasury and about the lich's capabilities. They finish the book still trapped, with the orb and ring recoverable, three other keys unsecured, Red Robe unidentified, and no proven route back to their real bodies.
How does it end? (ending)
Zorian and Zach end the book by recruiting Quatach-Ichl for a raid on Eldemar's royal treasury. The operation gives them a close examination of the main wardstone and lets them remove other valuables inside the Orb of the First Emperor, but Quatach-Ichl takes the Imperial Dagger as agreed. He then deduces that the world around him is artificial, breaks into Xvim's memories, feigns surrender, and detonates his soul. Zorian triggers an emergency restart before the blast can kill them, erasing the lich's discovery while preserving the loopers' knowledge of the raid. Zorian and Zach remain trapped. They can recover the orb and Imperial Ring again, but the Crown remains with Quatach-Ichl, the dagger remains protected by the royal treasury at the start of each iteration, and the fifth-key search is unfinished. Red Robe's identity and controller status are still unknown. Silver Lake continues to offer dimensional instruction, the shared primordial prison suggests a possible link to reality, and the loopers retain a growing network in Koth, among the Aranea, and in the desert. Their central problems remain assembling all five keys and returning to their real bodies without displacing the souls already there.
