Mother of Learning Arc 4 recap
Every recap below is hidden until you open it. Each one is safe to read once you have finished the chapter it names.
In short (whole book)
With only a limited number of restarts left, Zorian and Zach recover from soul injuries, assemble the five Imperial keys, and expand their alliance. Panaxeth corrupts the hoped-for exit, Silverlake defects, and Zorian crosses into reality through a desperate dimensional breach, where he discovers Zach also escaped. They organize Cyoria's defense while Red Robe, revealed as Jornak, prepares the invasion and Panaxeth's release. Zach's angelic contract requires both stopping that plan and eliminating lasting knowledge of the loop. During the battle, Zorian's coalition contains wraiths, defeats the cult, drives off Oganj, and forces Quatach-Ichl to retreat. Zorian then traps Zach and Jornak in constructed realities, extracts Jornak's contingencies, and erases the month's loop memories from their allies. Zach's contract ends safely, Jornak's pact kills him, and Panaxeth remains sealed. Cyoria rebuilds while Zorian and Zach hide their role, Quatach-Ichl survives with knowledge of the loop, and several political and magical dangers remain.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Zorian and Zach are trapped in a repeating month centered on Cyoria and the planned invasion. Zorian entered the loop accidentally, while Zach is its recognized Controller. They have spent many restarts developing their magic, gathering allies, and investigating a way out. Their route leads through the Sovereign Gate, which requires five Imperial artifacts to open. A hostile looper known as Red Robe escaped into the real world before them and interfered with Zach's memories. Quatach-Ichl, the powerful lich supporting the invasion, remains both an enemy and a possible source of expertise. The Gate is connected to Panaxeth's prison, making any escape attempt inseparable from the danger of releasing the primordial. Zorian and Zach begin this final phase with dwindling time, incomplete keys, and no certainty that both of them can leave safely.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Quatach-Ichl's soul attack leaves Zorian and Zach badly injured and consumes several restarts while they recover. Once healed, they resume the search for the five Imperial keys. They obtain the Crown and Dagger, use the Crown to give selected allies temporary loop markers, bind the hydra Princess to Zach, recover the Ring through an angelic instruction given to its Sulrothum keeper, and take the Staff from Violet Eye. Their enlarged network accelerates dimensional research and produces a portable pocket dimension, but the temporary markers cannot be extended. When the completed key opens the Sovereign Gate, its Guardian malfunctions and Panaxeth offers each looper an outside body in return for a promise of release. Silverlake apparently accepts and disappears, leaving a soulless corpse. Panaxeth's bargain is also the likely explanation for Red Robe's earlier escape. The Guardian then names Zach as the sole Controller and Zorian as an anomaly that will be erased at the next reset. The intended exit is compromised, Silverlake's expertise is gone, and Zorian must find another route before the current restart ends.
Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)
The loopers turn the Imperial Orb into an enhanced Black Room and recruit Quatach-Ichl's dimensional expertise. Unable to reproduce Silverlake's methods, they breach Panaxeth's prison and sacrifice the Orb to build a passage into reality. The escape collapses amid fighting. Daimen spends his life to stabilize it, and a mortally wounded Zorian crosses as a soul into his original body. He initially believes he escaped alone, but soon finds Zach in Cyoria. Red Robe is already active through simulacrums, attacking both the Aranea and House Noveda. Zorian rebuilds a network of allies, protects his family, and investigates massacres intended to supply wraith bombs. Veyers appears to be connected to Red Robe, but a mind search proves he is the original man with key memories erased. Silverlake reveals that Zach is bound by an angelic contract. An angel explains that Zach must stop the invasion's objective and prevent knowledge of the loop from enduring, while obeying limits on violence and mind magic. At a midnight meeting, Red Robe is exposed as Veyers' lawyer friend Jornak, who forces a truce by threatening widespread destruction.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
Zorian and Zach accept Jornak's fragile truce while both sides prepare to break it. Quatach-Ichl warns that Jornak can threaten the Koth evacuation route, so the defenders disperse civilians among several shelters instead. Zorian rebuilds his arsenal, gives a city detective evidence of the invasion, creates a hidden telepathic network across Cyoria, and coordinates the Aranea with sympathetic human allies. Xvim and Daimen help organize evacuations, though Taiven and Rea choose to remain. A kidnapped shifter boy provides a possible lead to the children required for Panaxeth's release. His sister uses blood magic, their sibling bond, and the last primordial essence in her blood to penetrate the kidnappers' defenses and locate the captives. Meanwhile, Alanic confirms that Jornak's wraith bombs cannot be safely disarmed and are linked to detonate if Jornak dies. With the sacrifices found and the festival approaching, Zorian orders an immediate assault. Artillery and monsters strike around Cyoria one day early, but traps and prepared underground defenders blunt the opening attack.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Zorian divides the enemy by attacking its underground base while the main coalition assaults Iasku Mansion to rescue the shifter children. The mansion's defenders include Oganj, two dragon mages, demons, undead, and dominated monsters. Jornak's faction moves the entire mansion and surrounding forest into central Cyoria, placing the battle beside the intended ritual site. Zorian summons an angelic host as Quatach-Ichl calls forth a demon army. Prepared soul traps contain the released wraith bombs, and the angels confine the largest clash. At the Hole, shifters and police attack the cultists before the sacrifice can begin. Silverlake reveals that the primordial essence in her body could open Panaxeth's prison without the children, but the aged version of her turns on the younger while Zorian releases the Grey Hunter against them. Zorian's metal colossus incapacitates Quatach-Ichl and forces him back to his phylactery. Through an angel-backed bargain, Oganj accepts the Imperial Orb and withdraws for a day. With the ritual disrupted and the strongest outside enemies removed, Zorian activates his citywide network and begins a concealed move against Zach and Jornak.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
Zorian appears to die while killing Jornak, leaving Zach to believe the invasion has ended at his friend's expense. Jornak then seems to win in another version of events, releasing Panaxeth and escaping Cyoria. Both outcomes are constructed realities. Zorian has used a touch-based spell, his simulacrums, Aranea support, and citywide surveillance to incapacitate Zach and Jornak and place them in separate illusions. By repeatedly changing Jornak's false victory, he discovers the enemy's contingencies. In reality, Silverlake is killed and eaten by the Grey Hunter, the invasion collapses, and the damaged Iasku Mansion is removed from Cyoria. Zorian erases the month's loop memories from everyone else who knows the secret, preserving copies for Xvim, Alanic, and Daimen. This fulfills Zach's angelic contract, which dissolves without killing him. Jornak's Panaxeth pact kills him at the deadline, while Panaxeth stays sealed and both protagonists survive. A month later Cyoria is rebuilding. Zach challenges his caretaker over House Noveda's stolen wealth, Daimen accepts Zorian as his brother, and the Aranea pursue cautious public relations. Quatach-Ichl survives with knowledge of the loop, investigators seek the unknown defenders, and the Grey Hunter hides underground with altered eggs.
How does it end? (ending)
Zorian's apparent death and Jornak's apparent victory are constructed realities used to uncover Jornak's hidden safeguards. Zorian removes the month's loop memories from everyone else who knows the secret, while preserving copies for Xvim, Alanic, and Daimen. The solution satisfies Zach's angelic contract, which dissolves harmlessly. Jornak's bargain kills him at the deadline, and Panaxeth remains imprisoned. Quatach-Ichl survives and gains knowledge of the loop through the soul fragment attached to Jornak. One month later, Zorian and Zach keep their roles in Cyoria's defense concealed. Zach sues to recover House Noveda's stolen assets. Daimen accepts the changed Zorian as his brother and helps maintain an intercontinental connection with House Taramatula. The Aranea begin cautious public contact without legal recognition, while Crown investigators continue seeking the city's unknown defenders. Oganj remains alive, Princess retains dangerous divine enhancements, and the Grey Hunter withdraws underground with primordial-altered eggs as Eldemar prepares for wider conflict.
