He conceals the letter from his former police partner Pete Huntley and begins reviewing the case with help from Jerome Robinson, the intelligent teenager who mows his lawn. The killer is Brady Hartsfield, a computer technician who also drives an ice-cream truck and lives with his alcoholic mother, Deborah. Brady watches Hodges and expects his pressure campaign to break him, unaware that it has given the retired detective a reason to live.

Janey's growing confidence and Hodges's renewed happiness make the case about more than professional redemption. The investigators understand that the anonymous messages to Olivia and Hodges were carefully designed to turn existing guilt and isolation into weapons. Brady sees that his attempt to frighten Hodges has failed and begins looking for a more direct way to remove him.

The investigators enter Brady's abandoned home and find the aftermath of Deborah's poisoning along with evidence of his preparations. They conclude that he has built a wearable bomb and is heading toward an event with a large, tightly packed audience. A major concert for young fans fits the clues, and Jerome realizes that his sister Barbara is attending. Police channels cannot be mobilized quickly enough on the strength of the trio's improvised investigation, so Hodges, Jerome, and Holly head for the auditorium themselves. Brady has disguised his appearance and entered among the arriving concertgoers, carrying the explosives under his clothes. He intends the performance's loudest moment to cover his action and maximize panic. The three pursuers must find one altered face in an enormous crowd before the show reaches that point.

At the concert venue, Hodges's heart condition becomes critical and he collapses before the group can reach Brady. Jerome stays long enough to summon medical help, then he and Holly continue the search because stopping would leave thousands in danger. Holly recognizes Brady in the crowd despite his disguise and acts without waiting for police. Using Hodges's weighted self-defense tool, she strikes Brady repeatedly in the head before he can detonate the vest. Security closes in, the audience is moved away from the explosives, and the planned massacre is prevented. Hodges is taken for emergency treatment while Jerome and Holly face the immediate aftermath of what they have done. Brady remains alive but gravely injured.

Hodges survives his heart attack and surgery. Brady is hospitalized with catastrophic brain injuries, outwardly unresponsive and unable to stand trial for the Mercedes murders, Janey's death, or the attempted concert bombing. Holly and Jerome receive public recognition for preventing the attack, while Hodges accepts that their unauthorized investigation was dangerous but also understands that it restored his desire to live.
