Elena answers by beginning the story of their friendship. As girls in a poor and violent Naples neighborhood, they are both bright but very different: Elena seeks adult approval, while Lila seems fearless and learns almost without effort. Their fascination with the feared Don Achille Carracci grows after their dolls disappear into a dark cellar. Convinced that he has them, the girls climb the stairs to confront him. Don Achille denies taking the dolls but gives them money. Instead of replacing the toys, Elena and Lila use the money to buy a copy of Little Women, turning the loss into a shared dream that writing and intelligence might change their lives.

Elena and Lila compete intensely at elementary school, where Lila's ability amazes their teacher and unsettles their classmates. The neighborhood's adult feuds repeatedly spill into the children's lives, and Don Achille is murdered; Pasquale Peluso's father is arrested for the killing. When the girls reach the point of continuing their education, their paths divide.
