By Dennis Lehane

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Jimmy Marcus (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A Boston man in his thirties who runs a neighborhood corner store, having gone straight after a criminal youth and a prison term. As a boy he was one of three friends from the same working-class street. Devoted to his family, he is a controlled but formidable man with a hard past, and the doting father of a lively teenage daughter from his first marriage.

Sean Devine (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A Massachusetts State Police homicide detective, another of the three boyhood friends, who came from a slightly steadier family than the others and left the old neighborhood behind. Reserved and self-contained, he is professionally competent but personally adrift, separated from his wife. His work brings him back into contact with the streets and people of his childhood.

Dave Boyle (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The third of the childhood friends, who as a boy was lured into a car by men posing as police and held and abused for days before escaping. He never fully recovered from the ordeal, and grew into a quiet, haunted man with a wife and son, still living in the old neighborhood and carrying the damage of what was done to him.

Katie Marcus (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Jimmy's nineteen-year-old daughter from his first marriage, a warm, spirited young woman on the verge of adulthood. Beloved by her father and close to her family, she has private plans for her future. Her murder early in the story is the tragedy that draws the three former friends back together.

Annabeth Marcus (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Jimmy's second wife and Katie's stepmother, a strong, fiercely loyal woman from a tough local family. Steady and protective of her husband and children, she is a source of resolve for Jimmy as the family is torn apart by grief.

Celeste Boyle (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Dave's wife and a cousin of Annabeth's, a caring woman devoted to her husband and son. Sensitive to Dave's moods and old wounds, she becomes frightened and uncertain as strange events unsettle her household in the aftermath of the neighborhood's tragedy.

Brendan Harris (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A gentle young man from the neighborhood who is secretly in love with Katie. Quietly planning a future with her away from Boston, he adores her and dreams of a life together, and he is left devastated and bewildered when she is killed.

Whitey Powers (Minor)

Appears from the start

A veteran state police sergeant who leads the homicide investigation into Katie's murder and partners with Sean on the case. Shrewd and experienced, he drives the practical work of tracking down suspects and evidence.
