Fighting as Ifrit, he advances through increasingly lethal contests while learning local crafting and strengthening Consume, which he names Bob. Amy gains power but arranges their first weaponsmith's murder. The dragonkin ruler then traps Max in a tower on another traveler's orders. Max survives the horde, kills a coerced silver dragon after promising to save its egg, breaks his collar, and defeats the ruler in dragon form. He takes the traveler's world-crossing ability, places Jazz Jack and the dark elf attendant over the city, and leaves Amy for execution. Back home, Max rejoins Tanila's party on floor 48. Tanila is pregnant, Bob is evolving, and the reunited group plans to clear floors 49 and 50 together.

Previously: Max, also known as Seth Pendell, climbed the tower with Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, and Cordelia as part of the Golden Axe community. Tanila is his bonded partner, and their companions regard the group as a family. Dexic is an allied fighter with an earlier debt linking her to Max's party. Everett is a Golden Axe leader, while Tom trains climbers and helps direct operations. Max carries a sentient internal ability called Consume, which can advise him and turn defeated enemies into avenues for growth. The tower climb, Max's bonds with his companions, and the dangerous attention drawn by his unusual power all remain central as this volume begins.

A silver-eyed captor holds Max behind a magical barrier, tests his abilities, and reveals that someone paid to have him targeted. Rather than kill him immediately, the captor fits him with a collar that seals his storage and releases him into another world with a seven-day head start. Max survives the jungle and desert by improvising weapons, using magic, regenerating severe wounds, and drawing strength from defeated creatures. The collar suppresses his contact with Consume and leaves direct confrontation with the hunter impossible. Max interrupts a group of slavers and frees a lizard woman whom he calls Amy. She guides him across the desert toward a city where the collar might be removed. After a brief return, Consume warns that unseen powers are watching Max. Amy brings him to her glass settlement, where her mother explains the local order: power can be acquired and traded, a female ruler controls the tower and gladiatorial games, and tournament tokens may buy both collar removal and a source of power for Amy. With the hunter's deadline closing, Max accepts the city arenas as his best route forward.

Max protects Amy and her mother from a hostile sand wielder, then travels with Amy into the layered city. Because his collar marks him as a valuable captive, they hide it and use Amy's local knowledge to pass the gates. Max remains loyal to Tanila despite Amy's growing attachment. He adopts the arena name Ifrit and arranges a contract that will earn the tokens needed to advance. A kimono-mimi weaponsmith teaches him that local crafting consumes life force. Max combines that method with regeneration and elemental magic to create a bonded staff of exceptional quality. Elsewhere, two months have passed since his disappearance. Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, Cordelia, and Dexic defeat the floor-45 boss and continue believing he survives. Consume returns just before Max's first match. Max wins that fight and kills a much stronger stone master in his second, exposing more durability and magic than intended. His victories earn passage to the next city ring, but also spread word of the unusual smooth-skinned fighter. Max invites the weaponsmith to relocate with them as unknown observers begin following him and Amy.

In the wealthier rings, Max gains a promoter, improved equipment, and the attention of the golden-scaled ruler who controls the city. After relatives of a defeated fighter violate arena protections, the ruler intervenes and recognizes that the hunter brought Max into her world. Jazz Jack, a dangerous Vorpal hunter, becomes Max's representative and ties housing and support for the group to arena success. The promised workshop for Max's weaponsmith is secured, but the weaponsmith is murdered almost immediately. Max responds with a series of increasingly ruthless arena victories while seeking the killer and demanding protection for Amy. Consume warns that uncontrolled violent hunger could endanger Max's own friends. Amy is moved ahead and receives two power gems. Max privately gives Consume the name Bob. Deeper in the city, Jazz Jack explains that advancement is effectively permanent and that champions may come from other worlds. When Max is assigned seven opponents at once, he follows Bob's plan and summons a demon under a limited contract. The demon kills all seven, clashes briefly with the arriving ruler, and departs. The victory raises Max to another major strength threshold and leaves the inner arena wary of facing Ifrit.

Amy emerges from her enhancement with substantial power, takes a new identity, and leaves Max's group. Max then kills the lionkin champion Shamina after Bob pays a serious cost to reset his abilities. The win earns entry to the inner city, but the ruler demands three further victories before allowing tower access and leaves the eventual price of helping Max return home unstated. Jazz Jack accompanies Max into the sealed district, sacrificing an easy return to his own family. The ruler sends Max into a larger arena that draws fighters from many worlds. Max survives lethal matches against a flying combat machine and an armored insect, gaining broad language comprehension while continuing to hide his collar and regeneration. Bob's next evolution draws closer. Seeking a weapon able to penetrate stronger armor, Max forms a secret partnership with an experienced dwarven weaponsmith. They combine her rare materials with his elemental crafting methods to produce a bonded weapon that can shift among melee forms. In return, Max promises to help her make two additional weapons. He also reaches a major dexterity threshold, leaving him substantially faster and better equipped for the arena battles ahead.

Jazz Jack asks Max for a future skill shard so he can become strong enough to return to his wife and children, and Max agrees. After more victories, the ruler offers Max entry to the tower. Bob identifies the offer as a trap, but Max accepts. Inside, the ruler reveals that another world traveler paid her to remove him and that Amy arranged the first weaponsmith's murder. An apparently endless horde then keeps Max fighting for forty days. His summoned demon returns as a demon lord and clears a temporary path in exchange for later demon essence, with both sides accepting a mutual nonaggression pact. At the exit, Max finds a silver dragon enslaved by the ruler and forced to kill survivors because she holds his unhatched child. Max promises to rescue the egg. The dragon permits one free attack, and Max's Ultimate Form breaks his own collar before he kills the guardian. Free for the first time since his abduction, Max returns to the city, confirms Amy's responsibility, and coerces the ruler's attendant into helping him enter her estate. He recovers the living silver dragon egg and uses it as leverage to force the ruler into a public arena fight.

Her fire repeatedly inflicts fatal damage, but Bob spends stored power to refresh Max's defenses and abilities. Max eventually phases inside her body and destroys her heart. After killing the ruler, he acquires powers that can block system travel and uses them to trap the other world traveler who financed his removal. Bob attacks the traveler and takes the world-crossing ability Max needs. Max claims the city, appoints Jazz Jack to civic administration and the dark elf attendant to arena operations, and opens the local tower to capable challengers. He then defeats Amy over the weaponsmith's murder and leaves her to Jazz Jack for execution. Max returns home, clears floors 40 through 47 alone, and reaches his companions during their floor-48 battle. Bob withdraws to begin an evolution as Max reunites with Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, Cordelia, and Dexic. Back at Golden Axe, they agree to hide his imprisonment behind a claim of overseas travel. Tanila confirms her pregnancy. Expecting enemies to threaten their child, she and Max commit to becoming stronger, while the reunited party plans to clear floors 49 and 50 together.

Max kills the dragonkin ruler in a public arena battle and uses her powers to prevent the traveler behind his removal from escaping. Bob attacks the traveler and acquires the travel ability Max needs. Max declares himself the city's champion, appointing Jazz Jack to oversee civic affairs and the dark elf attendant to run the arena. He defeats Amy over her role in the first weaponsmith's murder and leaves her with Jazz Jack for execution. The city remains under Max's remote authority, while his promise of a future skill shard to Jazz Jack and his obligation to help the dwarven weaponsmith create two more weapons remain open. Max returns to his own world, races through tower floors 40 to 47, and reunites with Tanila, Fowl, Batrire, Cordelia, and Dexic on floor 48. They conceal his cross-world captivity behind a story of overseas travel. Tanila confirms that she carries Max's child, and they expect threats connected to both of them. The party will tackle floors 49 and 50 together. Bob withdraws to evolve, the silver dragon's living egg remains in Max's care, and the original silver-eyed hunter is still at large.
