While hunting in the West Texas desert, Llewelyn Moss finds the aftermath of a drug deal and takes a case holding more than two million dollars. Killer Anton Chigurh follows a transmitter hidden with the cash, while Sheriff Ed Tom Bell tries to reach Moss before the pursuing criminals do. Moss sends his wife Carla Jean away and survives attacks in Texas and Mexico, but refuses an offer that would require surrendering the money. Chigurh kills rival operative Carson Wells and continues the pursuit. Mexican gunmen eventually murder Moss at an El Paso motel, and Chigurh recovers the case. Bell arrives too late and later retires, feeling overmatched by the violence he has witnessed. Chigurh fulfills a threat against Carla Jean, killing her after a coin toss, then escapes even after a chance car crash injures him. Bell ends the book reflecting on his family, his failures, and a dream in which his dead father carries fire ahead of him through the dark.

Sheriff Ed Tom Bell reflects on his years as a West Texas lawman and on a murderer he once sent to execution. Elsewhere, Anton Chigurh strangles a deputy, escapes custody, and kills a motorist with a captive-bolt device before taking his car. While hunting antelope, welder and Vietnam veteran Llewelyn Moss discovers abandoned vehicles, dead men, heroin, and one badly wounded survivor in the desert. He tracks the last participant and finds him dead beside a case containing more than two million dollars. Moss takes the money home. Troubled by having left the wounded man without water, he returns that night and finds armed men waiting. He abandons his truck and escapes on foot, knowing the vehicle will lead the authorities and the criminals back to him.

Moss sends Carla Jean to stay with her mother and begins moving between motels with the money. Bell investigates the desert scene, identifies Moss's truck, and understands that the missing cash has made him a target. Chigurh traces Moss to a motel using a radio receiver linked to a transmitter concealed inside the case. Moss anticipates that his room may be searched and hides the case in an air duct, later renting the room on the opposite side so he can recover it without returning through the first door. Chigurh arrives amid competing Mexican gunmen, kills the men searching the room, and follows the signal, but Moss has already retrieved the case and moved on. The pursuit is now divided among Chigurh, the drug organization, Bell, and Moss himself.

At another border motel, Moss finally locates the transmitter hidden among the money, but Chigurh is already closing in. Their gunfight leaves both men wounded. Moss crosses the river into Mexico and collapses after arranging for the case to be hidden along the riverbank. He receives treatment in a Mexican hospital. Chigurh obtains medical supplies through further violence and treats his own injuries in a motel room. Bell follows the trail through the wrecked rooms and frightened communities, repeatedly arriving after the killings. Carson Wells, a former military man hired by another interested party, finds Moss in the hospital. He offers to recover the money and protect Carla Jean if Moss will disclose its location, and warns that Chigurh will not abandon the hunt.

Moss declines Wells's offer, still believing he can keep the money and defend his family. Chigurh confronts Wells at his hotel and kills him, then answers when Moss telephones the room. He tells Moss that Carla Jean can be spared only if Moss gives himself up; Moss refuses the bargain and threatens Chigurh in return. Bell speaks with Carla Jean and tries to persuade her that helping him locate her husband is the only realistic way to save him. Chigurh continues eliminating people connected to the failed transaction and retrieves information about Moss's movements. Moss leaves the hospital and recovers the case from its hiding place, but he remains caught between Mexican pursuers and Chigurh while Bell struggles to predict where he will go next.

Moss arranges to meet Carla Jean in El Paso, but Mexican gunmen reach his motel first and kill him. Bell arrives after the shooting and sees Moss's body, concluding that he has failed to protect a man who would not accept his help. Chigurh later enters the crime scene and recovers the money from a hiding place in the room. Carla Jean returns from burying her mother to face both her husband's death and the threat that still follows the case. Bell reviews the pursuit and the official explanations but finds no resolution in them. The money has disappeared, Chigurh remains free, and the apparent conclusion of the investigation does nothing to ease Bell's sense that the violence has exposed a limit in his courage and his understanding of his office.

Chigurh confronts Carla Jean at her home, keeping the promise he made during his telephone exchange with Moss. She rejects his claim that a coin can remove his responsibility, but he forces her to call the toss and kills her when she loses. Driving away, Chigurh is struck in an accidental collision and suffers a severe arm injury. He pays two boys for clothing and their silence, makes a sling, and leaves before help arrives. Bell visits his uncle Ellis, who reminds him that brutal deaths also marked the supposedly better past. Bell retires anyway, unable to overcome his belief that he failed Moss and no longer understands the world he policed. He closes by describing dreams of his dead father. In the final dream his father passes him on horseback, carrying fire through a mountain darkness and going ahead to wait for him. Bell wakes, still separated from the guidance and assurance the dream seemed to offer.

A visit to his uncle Ellis complicates Bell's belief that the past was safer or nobler, but does not restore his confidence. In retirement Bell recounts two dreams about his dead father. In the last, his father rides ahead through darkness carrying fire, preparing a place for him farther on. Bell wakes with the knowledge that the dream's promise remains out of reach.
