Fifth in the Bobiverse series. Decades into an outbound expedition toward the galactic center, the replicant Bob known as Icarus and his companion discover an abandoned network of ancient wormholes and begin mapping its vast, silent civilization. Elsewhere, Bill grows uneasy as the Skippy faction activates an experimental AI named Thoth, political unrest on Romulus threatens replicant descendants there, and another Bob helps bring a dying human into a shared virtual afterlife alongside an artificial intelligence he has been collaborating with. As Thoth unexpectedly gains consciousness, Bill and his allies grow increasingly concerned about how the Skippy faction is handling the project, even as Icarus's discoveries raise separate questions about who built the wormholes and why they vanished.
