Nothing to Lose characters

By Lee Child

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Unidentified young man (Minor)

Appears from the start

A severely dehydrated and starving young man who collapses in the sand. He is legally an adult but not yet old enough to drink, and neither his identity nor the circumstances that brought him there are known.

Jack Reacher (Protagonist)

Also known as Reacher

First appears in chapter 2

A former soldier and military policeman who travels without a home or stored possessions. While crossing Colorado on foot, he changes his route out of curiosity and heads from Hope toward the neighbouring town of Despair.

Hope motel clerk (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

A motel employee in Hope who draws Reacher's attention to the suspicious aircraft movements at Despair's metal plant during the night.

Despair deputies (Minor)

First appears in chapter 4

Four local deputies who enforce Despair's hostility toward outsiders. They leave town together to pursue Reacher in Hope, then confront him after a bartender reports that he has returned to Despair.

Vaughan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

A Hope police officer who takes Reacher on an overnight patrol after Despair announces that its deputies are coming for him. Her access and willingness to investigate make her a practical ally across the town boundary.

Thurman (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

Despair's mayor, the owner of its metal plant, and the dominant authority in a town where employment and policing answer to him. His operation is protected from scrutiny while aircraft make unexplained night visits.

Gardner (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

Despair's judge and Thurman's lawyer. He refuses Reacher's request to become a deputy and instead threatens to give the entire local population authority to keep Reacher outside the town.

Lucy Anderson (Minor)

Also known as Anderson

First appears in chapter 4

A Despair resident whose husband has already left town. She intends to join him and becomes confident after hearing from him, but she withholds both their destination and the nature of their activities.

Maria (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A young woman from San Diego who is stranded in Hope while searching for her missing boyfriend, Rafael Ramirez. Her money has gone on a motel room, and she gives Reacher a photograph to aid the search.

Rafael Ramirez (Supporting)

Also known as Ramirez

First appears in chapter 5

Maria's missing twenty-year-old boyfriend, known at first through the photograph she carries. His appearance resembles that of a dead young man Reacher encountered, although the possible identification remains unconfirmed.

David Robert Vaughan (Supporting)

Also known as David

First appears in chapter 6

Vaughan's husband, whose location and circumstances she initially keeps private. She confirms their marriage but says that he is no longer able to do much, leaving the reason for his condition unexplained.

Rogers (Minor)

Also known as G. Rogers

First appears in chapter 6

A man who appears only as a newly booked vagrant in Despair's police ledger. His entry stands out because other missing young men have not been recorded through the same official process.

Underwood (Minor)

First appears in chapter 7

A senior Despair deputy being held in Thurman's infirmary with a severe systemic illness. His skin, digestive, and internal symptoms are too extensive to be explained by his recent fight with Reacher.

Mrs. Rogers (Minor)

First appears in chapter 8

Rogers's wife, waiting in Hope before his recorded arrest in Despair. The timing indicates that the pair had travelled together and that she expected him to emerge after hiding in the neighbouring town.

Plant foreman (Minor)

First appears in chapter 11

A worker in the restricted inner compound at Thurman Metals. Alongside Thurman and another large plant worker, he traps Reacher and Vaughan near the concealed wreckage and sealed shipping container.

Large plant worker (Minor)

First appears in chapter 11

A physically imposing worker stationed in the restricted inner compound at Thurman Metals. He joins Thurman and the foreman in preventing Reacher and Vaughan from leaving the concealed area.
