Kaladin (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
The freed slave turned sworn Windrunner, leader of Bridge Four, now training his men to become knights in their own right at the recovered city of Urithiru. Bonded to the honorspren Syl and able to draw on the storms to fly and to heal, he is a protector to his core, though his old rage at injustice and his lingering darkness still weigh on him.
Shallan Davar (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
The young Lightweaver whose illusions found the lost city of Urithiru, betrothed to Adolin Kholin and quietly entangled with a secret society. Gifted at weaving light into perfect disguises and at slipping into other personas, she uses those masks to do dangerous work and to keep her own grief and buried memories at arm's length.
Dalinar Kholin (Protagonist)
Also known as The Blackthorn
Appears from the start
The highprince who reunited enough of Alethkar to reclaim Urithiru and now leads the coalition against the returned enemy, receiving guidance through storm-sent visions. Once a savage conqueror, he has bound himself to a hard-won code of honor, though there are years of his own past he does not fully remember and does not wish to.
Navani Kholin (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The scholar-queen of Alethkar, now Dalinar's wife and closest partner, who leads the study of the ancient devices and mechanical magic housed in Urithiru. Sharp, practical, and politically shrewd, she manages both the science and the diplomacy of a fledgling alliance under siege.
Adolin Kholin (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Dalinar's elder son and a renowned duelist, betrothed to Shallan, who secretly killed the traitorous highprince Sadeas at the close of the previous book and now carries that act quietly. Charming and loyal, unusually decent among ambitious lighteyes, he is a soldier without a Radiant's power in a world suddenly full of them.
Jasnah Kholin (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The formidable scholar-princess, an Elsecaller among the returned Radiants, who reappeared alive after being thought dead. Ruthless in defense of her people and unmatched in learning, she is deep in the politics of a threatened kingdom and the research needed to fight an enemy out of legend.
Renarin Kholin (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Dalinar's quiet younger son, revealed at the last book's end to be a budding Knight Radiant himself, to the surprise of a family that had always thought him too frail to fight. Earnest and observant, he is still learning what his unusual gifts mean and how he fits among the newly reborn orders.
Szeth (Supporting)
Also known as Szeth-son-son-Vallano
Appears from the start
The Shin former assassin, defeated and then restored to life, now bearing a strange, talkative living sword. Freed from the oath-stone that once enslaved him and shaken by the possibility that his people wrongly condemned him, he searches for a just cause and a master worthy of his lethal skills.
Taravangian (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
The kindly-seeming king of Kharbranth, exposed as the secret mastermind behind the Assassin in White and a cold, sprawling conspiracy. His intelligence and compassion vary wildly from day to day, and he follows a cryptic plan he composed on a day of terrible brilliance, convinced that only ruthless calculation can save any part of humanity.
Moash (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
A former soldier of Bridge Four who conspired to murder the king, betrayed his friends, and fled in disgrace. Consumed by hatred of the lighteyed nobility and by his own guilt, he has cut himself off from the people who once trusted him and drifts toward the enemy's cause.
Venli (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A scholar of the listeners, the people the Alethi call Parshendi, who long sought to recover her folk's lost forms and powers. Ambitious and proud of her research, she is caught up in the transformation of her people as the ancient enemy returns to reclaim and command them.
Odium (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 28
The vast, malevolent god-force behind the Desolations and the return of the ancient enemy: the embodiment of divine hatred and passion, ancient and patient. He works through the reborn immortals and the awakened singers, seeking to break or dominate humanity, and he tests the coalition's leaders with temptation as much as with armies.
