A young woman who grew up over her family's curiosity shop in Valenda, raised on her mother's stories about the Magnificent North, a distant kingdom where magic is supposed to be ordinary. Both her parents are dead. She is hopeful to the point of recklessness and believes in happy endings as a matter of principle rather than evidence. She is in love with Luc Navarro, and she has just learned that Luc is about to marry her stepsister.

One of the Fates, the immortals of the old stories, who has a statue in a temple in Valenda where people leave offerings and pray. He very occasionally answers. He appears as a young man with pale hair and an apple in hand, and he is charming the way a well-built trap is charming. His kiss kills whoever receives it. He never does anything for nothing, and his prices are not the ones people expect.

The young man Evangeline loves, who became engaged to her stepsister with no warning and no explanation. Evangeline is convinced the change of heart was not his own doing, which is what makes her willing to do something drastic about it.

Evangeline's stepsister, engaged to Luc Navarro. She is genuinely warm toward Evangeline and has done nothing to deserve what Evangeline is contemplating, which makes the plan to stop the wedding harder rather than easier.

The young ruler of the Magnificent North, heir of one of its great houses and the most sought-after man in the kingdom. He is handsome, well-mannered and entirely accustomed to being wanted, and he sits at the center of the North's house politics when Evangeline arrives there knowing nobody.

A young woman Evangeline meets in the Magnificent North who becomes her friend and her guide to a place whose rules she does not know. She is warm, well-connected and easy company, and she knows considerably more about the North's oldest stories than she offers unprompted.

A vampire of the Magnificent North, where vampires are a fact of local life rather than a superstition. He is powerful, entirely self-interested, and open to an arrangement, and what he asks in exchange is never trivial.
