Tala (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A Defender whose iron and void magic are bound to her stewardship of Kit and Irondale. She is recovering from recent temporary deaths, planning her marriage to Rain, and trying to understand the unusual condition of her soul without abandoning her responsibilities.

Rain (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Tala's fiance and a kinetic mage in her closest circle. He is preparing to marry Tala while continuing his own magical development.

Terry (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Tala's soulbound avian companion and the namesake of the Talons. Reconstitution has left him smaller, but he retains formidable strength, flickering movement, void attacks, and threefold perception.

Kit (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Tala's sentient bound sanctum, refuge, and storage space. Kit contains the growing settlement of Irondale and supports Tala's household and allies, while its unusual capacity makes every proposed expansion or new resident a question of safety and control.

Tala's alternate interface (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Tala's distinct alternate interface and shared-body collaborator. She assists with records, planning, training, and practical decisions, and has responded differently to their recent trauma. Their cooperation depends on respecting separate perspectives within one life.

Lynn (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Irondale's administrator and Tala's civilian representative. Lynn manages population records, labor and rebirth planning, trade, and the settlement's daily needs. She also serves as a trusted intermediary when residents need commitments or answers from Tala.

Grediv (Supporting)

Also known as Master Grediv

Appears from the start

A senior Defender and mentor within Tala and Rain's wider circle. His experience makes him a relevant source of guidance as they recover and prepare for further advancement.

Nadro (Supporting)

Also known as Master Nadro

Appears from the start

The trusted counselor chosen to oversee Tala and Rain's preparations for marriage and serve as their proposed officiant.

Master Lisa (Supporting)

Also known as Lisa

A fox-like resident of Kit who specializes in construction. He recognizes the newly arrived glass phoenix as dangerous and responds to her presence with immediate distrust.

the glass phoenix (Supporting)

Also known as voluntary glass prisoner

A sapient glass-based being who sought confinement because her drive to accumulate silica could endanger the world around her. She accepts transfer into Kit on the condition that she retains sovereignty over her existing glass while Kit prevents further claims.

Mia Lane (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

An investigator from the House of Blood who is independently seeking knowledge about gated humanity. Her search has already destroyed a hidden research settlement, and her references to Tala show a connection to Tala's earlier life without yet establishing what she intends to do.

Holly (Supporting)

Also known as Mistress Holly

First appears in chapter 8

An inscription specialist traveling to Tala and Rain's wedding with a significant gift for the couple.

Cazor (Minor)

First appears in chapter 8

An iron and magnetism mage who survives the destruction of a heavily laden caravan by migrating windblade starlings. Wounded and alone, he reports the loss and demonstrates enough control to fly rapidly and improvise defenses on a large scale.

Simon (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 13

A blind, white-haired boy with an unexplained ability to restrain Terry despite Terry's strength. He carries an unusual supply of sweets in dimensional storage and offers them as experiments.

Ron (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 15

A representative of Irondale's Defenders who accompanies their training at old Marleyweather. He respects Tala's request to use a formal title instead of treating her as their mother.

the wolf god beast (Supporting)

Also known as Lunar Hunt host

First appears in chapter 22

The sovereign host of the Lunar Hunt, whose authority exceeds Tala's within the hidden northern domain. He welcomes Tala, Rain, and Terry and leads them into the Hunt under its conditions.

Alat (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

The name used for Tala's inner collaborator, who works with her from within their shared body.

the wolf god beast's mate (Supporting)

Also known as the Lunar Hunt

First appears in chapter 23

The wolf god beast's immortal, voidling-like mate, whose vast body encompasses the Lunar Hunt domain.

Baba Yaga (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 35

An immortal user of authority and illusion who attacks Tala and Rain from a chicken-legged house. Her shifting control turns weapons and perceptions against them, and records identify enslaved souls among her sources of power. She escapes after Tala's destructive counterattack.

the flying village co-leaders (Supporting)

Also known as female co-leader, male co-leader

First appears in chapter 47

A married Paragon pair who lead a mobile, multi-species settlement. They receive Tala's group and open negotiations over travel and trade, offering a working example of leadership outside the cycling cities and of two advanced partners developing together.

Rain's alternate interface (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 45

Rain's distinct internal co-operator, capable of helping him sustain several continuing lines of thought. The arrangement differs from Tala and Alat's partnership, but it similarly supports research, magical practice, and the demanding work of preparing for further advancement.
