Still shunned for using demon magic, Rachel must cross the country to ask the witches' coven in San Francisco to restore her standing. With flying closed to her, she travels by road with Ivy, Jenks, and Trent, who has a secret elven task of his own. Pursuit, magical attacks, and Trent's concealed agenda turn the trip into a test of the trust between former enemies. After they reach the West Coast, Rachel's hearing is overtaken by a larger danger: Ku'Sox, an ancient demon able to evade many ordinary limits, enters the conflict. Rachel works with Trent, her friends, and members of demon society to survive him. The coven finally lifts her shunning, but the outcome does not simply return her to her old identity. Previously: Rachel Morgan left Inderland Security and founded Vampiric Charms with living vampire Ivy Tamwood and pixy Jenks. Childhood genetic treatment saved Rachel from Rosewood syndrome and left her able to perform magic associated with demons. After recovering the truth that Piscary murdered her boyfriend Kisten, Rachel used forbidden magic during a banshee case and became a target of the Coven of Moral and Ethical Standards. She survived its attempt to imprison and alter her, and Vivian began questioning the coven's conduct, but Rachel remained formally shunned. Nick betrayed her again, Al took Pierce as a familiar, and Jenks's wife Matalina died at the end of her natural life. Rachel begins this book at the church with Ivy and a grieving Jenks, still studying under Al and still denied ordinary standing among witches. Her chance to appeal the shunning requires appearing before the coven in San Francisco.

Rachel's shunning continues to close off ordinary work, travel, and legal protection. She needs to reach the coven's annual gathering in San Francisco, but the restrictions surrounding her make commercial flight impractical. Trent Kalamack is also heading west for reasons he will not fully explain and arranges a shared overland journey. Rachel, Ivy, and Jenks accept the uncomfortable solution because it offers the best chance of reaching the hearing. The party leaves Cincinnati with conflicting goals: Rachel wants her status restored, Trent is pursuing a private obligation within elf society, and everyone expects opponents of one or both travelers to interfere. Early attacks confirm that the trip is being watched and that neither Trent's resources nor Rachel's magic can make the route safe.

Rachel, Ivy, Jenks, and Trent continue west while repeated danger strips away the idea that their arrangement is merely transportation. Jenks remains vulnerable away from his usual territory, and Ivy and Rachel must protect the group without trusting all of Trent's plans. Trent's supposedly straightforward business proves to be an elven test with legal and political consequences, involving actions he cannot perform openly. Rachel discovers enough to know he has used the trip to reach a guarded objective, yet she helps when abandoning him would leave everyone in greater danger. Their cooperation remains argumentative, but Rachel begins to see the risks Trent takes apart from the polished public identity he presents in Cincinnati.

The group completes the coast-to-coast drive and reaches the West Coast after surviving pursuit and helping Trent finish the clandestine task tied to his standing among elves.
