The Invalid boy who lived in Portland under a forged identity, who showed Lena the Wilds and the truth about the cured cities, and who stayed on the city side of the border fence so that she could get over it. Lena heard the guards fire as she ran, and has believed since that he died there.

The girl who went over the fence out of Portland and did not die in the Wilds. The book follows her in two threads. In the earlier one she is newly arrived on the wrong side of the border, sick, starving and grieving, with no idea how to survive outside a city. In the later one she is living in New York under the name Lena Morgan Jones, posing as a cured student, working for the resistance, and unrecognisable to anyone who knew the careful girl she used to be: harder, colder, and trained to do what she is told.

The leader of a homesteader camp in the Wilds who finds Lena at the border and keeps her alive. Practical to the point of ruthlessness, she runs her people by strict rules, the first of which is that the past is dead and nobody talks about who they were before. She has no patience for grief and a great deal of patience for teaching someone to be useful.

The eighteen-year-old son of the man who founded Deliria-Free America, the movement campaigning for the cure to be given earlier and to everybody. He appears at DFA events as its model young believer, and he has publicly committed to undergoing the procedure himself even though a condition in his brain makes it likely to kill or disable him. Composed, courteous and entirely certain of what he has been raised to believe.

Julian's father and the head of Deliria-Free America, a movement that has grown powerful enough to shape government policy. He is a public man who speaks about sacrifice for the cause, and he raised his son to be its proof.

Raven's partner in the homestead: blunt, hard to read, and dismissive of Lena at first. He does the work nobody else wants and says almost nothing about himself.

A small girl living with the homesteaders, born on the wrong side of the fence and never registered as a person by anyone. Lena helps look after her, and finds in her the first thing in the Wilds she can care about.

One of the homesteaders, easygoing and quick to joke, and among the first people in the camp to treat Lena as company rather than a burden.
