Nearby, Canadians Patty Sundstrom and Shorty Fleck are trapped at a false motel and selected as prey for a paid human hunt. Reacher's research and the couple's captivity converge at the remote property. Patty and Shorty burn the motel, fight back, and survive, although Shorty is badly wounded. They and Reacher overcome the hunters, and Reacher kills Mark Breacher, the organizer who had appeared to share Reacher's surname. The couple leaves with their valuable comics and the operation's cash. Reacher then learns that his father was Bill, later William Reacher, who borrowed his cousin Stan Reacher's birth certificate after killing a bully and enlisted in the Marines under that identity. Carter Carrington and Elizabeth Castle are found safe together, and Reacher resumes his journey toward San Diego.

Reacher is travelling from coastal Maine toward San Diego when a rural fork prompts a detour to Laconia, the birthplace attributed to his late father, Stan Reacher. Local property and census searches initially find no trace of the family. Elizabeth Castle directs him to census specialist Carter Carrington, and police officers Jim Shaw and Brenda Amos help locate a 1943 report. It says Stan was present when another youth beat a local bully, but Stan himself ran from the confrontation. Meanwhile, Canadian couple Patty Sundstrom and Shorty Fleck reach an isolated motel after their Honda overheats. Mark and his associates Robert, Stephen, and Peter claim to be investors, yet their explanations grow increasingly troubling. The room has no communications, its door sometimes refuses to open, and the promised mechanic remains unavailable. Unknown to the couple, the men can control the lock remotely and watch them through concealed cameras. After establishing that nobody knows where Patty and Shorty are, the group decides they are suitable for an undisclosed purpose and alerts an outside contact.

A police record identifies the motel leader as Mark Reacher, suggesting a possible connection to Jack Reacher's family inquiry. County records finally place James, Elizabeth, and Stan Reacher in Ryantown, a vanished mill settlement outside Laconia. Mark learns that Reacher is searching for the old family address. At the motel, Patty finds evidence contradicting the claim that their room is newly refurbished. She and Shorty move their luggage toward the road using a quad bike, only to discover that the motel sign has vanished and that their hosts have recovered the hidden bags. Patty's mechanical knowledge exposes further contradictions in the alleged Honda fault. Karel arrives with a tow truck and confirms that the battery feed was deliberately cut. He appears willing to remove the couple, but never returns after sending them inside. Their door locks and the blind closes, leaving them physically imprisoned. Elsewhere, Reacher protects a bar worker from an attacker and is warned by Brenda Amos and Jim Shaw that the man's criminally connected father may send violent associates after him. Reacher nevertheless continues toward Ryantown.

Karel joins Mark's group after posing as an independent mechanic, confirming that the failed rescue was staged. Patty deduces that the room is under audio surveillance and that the captors have tailored their deceptions around private conversations. Reacher reaches Ryantown with a local researcher and locates the former family home, but clashes with an orchard family paid to keep the researcher away. Back in Laconia, Carter Carrington and Elizabeth Castle continue helping with the historical puzzle. Reacher also faces retaliation from the orchard group and a separate Massachusetts operation linked to the man he injured while defending the bar worker. Police shelter him while tracking an obvious decoy vehicle, but a disguised van slips away and reaches the remote motel. Wealthy men using false identities begin arriving there and inspecting Patty and Shorty through the window. Reacher meets Mortimer, an elderly Ryantown witness, with help from Reverend Patrick G. Burke. Mortimer remembers Stan and a visiting cousin as close birdwatchers, though he cannot reliably tell them apart. He directs Reacher to old bird-club records. Patty and Shorty now know that strangers are evaluating them while the motel group watches their every move.

Bird-club records show that S. Reacher and W. Reacher jointly reported a rare hawk over Ryantown. A university ornithologist related to both contributors offers a possible route to identifying the second boy. Reacher defeats three men attempting to seize him in the library, then returns to Ryantown and overcomes another group assembled by the orchard family. At the motel, six paying customers gather. Karel is the final participant, receiving favorable terms because he helped deceive the captives. Room 10 proves to be a reinforced prison that blocks both escape and radio signals. Brenda Amos reports that Carter Carrington and Elizabeth Castle are missing, while a professor claims Stan Reacher is alive. Reacher and Burke find the motel road blocked by Karel's tow truck and visit the property. Peter, using the name Tony Kelly, presents a coordinated cover story, but vehicle records and the false contractor explanation convince Reacher that someone is being held there. Peter tells Patty and Shorty that they must flee through the forest. Mark then states the truth: six customers have paid to hunt them with bows, night vision, and quad bikes. As the door unlocks and the hunt begins, Reacher enters the forest alone.

Patty and Shorty initially become lost in the woods, unaware that their flashlights contain tracking devices. They return to the motel and turn the captors' sabotage against them, using fuel from the parked vehicles to set the property ablaze. The fire destroys the operation's cameras and communications and spoils the hunters' night vision. Shorty kills one hunter before another shoots him through the thigh. Patty kills that attacker, treats Shorty's likely fractured leg, and goes in search of transport. Reacher kills or defeats the hunters he encounters. With the enterprise collapsing, Mark murders Stephen, Robert, and Peter, burns the remaining buildings, and tries to flee with the cash and false identities. Karel continues hunting Patty, but Mark shoots him to obtain the tow-truck key. Reacher arrives before Mark can kill Patty, disarms him, and forces him to reveal that his surname is Breacher rather than Reacher. When Patty declines to execute their captor, Reacher kills Breacher himself. Reacher and Patty recover Shorty. The couple retains its valuable comics and receives roughly a million dollars found in Breacher's Mercedes, then prepares to leave for urgent medical treatment.

Reacher clears the tow truck from the access road, and Patty and Shorty drive south in Breacher's Mercedes with their comics and the hunters' cash. Shorty remains in need of urgent treatment, but both have escaped the destroyed operation. Brenda Amos reports that the Boston cleanup operative has returned home, though Carter Carrington and Elizabeth Castle are still missing. She has also found a living man named Stan Reacher. This Stan explains that he is not Jack Reacher's father. He grew up in Ryantown as the son of James and Elizabeth Reacher, alongside a cousin named Bill. Bill was the other young birdwatcher, defended Stan from the local bully, and later killed that man. To conceal his identity and enlist in the Marines, Bill borrowed Stan's birth certificate. Bill subsequently became William Reacher, married Josephine, and had two sons, including Jack. Reacher recognizes that his father's history was concealed by the borrowed identity rather than by a different parentage. At Ryantown, he finds Carrington and Castle alive, together, and voluntarily camping at the former family site. After they reassure Amos, Reacher ends his inquiries and resumes hitchhiking alone toward San Diego.

The motel operation collapses after Patty and Shorty set the property on fire and resist the hunters. Shorty suffers a grave thigh wound, but Patty keeps him alive until Reacher reaches them. Mark kills Stephen, Robert, and Peter to erase witnesses, then kills Karel to obtain the tow-truck key. Reacher disarms and kills Mark. Patty and Shorty depart in Mark's Mercedes to seek treatment, carrying their comics and roughly a million dollars from the hunt. The operation's known participants are dead. Amos reports that the Boston cleanup operative has withdrawn. The living Stan Reacher explains that Reacher's father was his cousin Bill, later William Reacher, who used Stan's birth certificate to join the Marines after killing the local bully. Carrington and Castle, feared missing, are safely camping together at the old Ryantown site. Reacher chooses not to pursue the unknown people who once sent his father birthday cards. With the family mystery and immediate danger resolved, he leaves alone for San Diego.
