Persuasion

By Jane Austen

Sir Walter Elliot is a baronet of great vanity and dwindling money, and when his debts can no longer be ignored he agrees to let Kellynch Hall, the family seat in Somerset, and move to Bath. His second daughter, Anne, twenty-seven, quiet and overlooked by her father and her elder sister, learns that the new tenant is to be Admiral Croft, whose wife is the sister of Frederick Wentworth. Eight years earlier, at nineteen, Anne was engaged to Wentworth, then a young naval commander with no fortune and every confidence in his future, and gave him up on the advice of Lady Russell, the family friend she trusted most. Since then the war at sea has made him a captain with money of his own, and he is coming into the neighbourhood. The novel follows Anne as she is thrown into his company again among her sister's in-laws at Uppercross.
