The boy who refuses to grow up, a carefree, cocky, forgetful spirit of eternal childhood who can fly and lives in the far-off island of Neverland as captain of a band of Lost Boys. Bold and heedless, delighting in adventure and his own cleverness, he slips into the Darling children's nursery in search of his lost shadow. Charming and reckless in equal measure, he has no memory for yesterday and no wish for the responsibilities of age.

The eldest of the three Darling children, a thoughtful, imaginative girl on the edge of growing up, full of stories and a budding motherliness. When Peter Pan appears and offers her adventure, she is enchanted by him and by the idea of Neverland, and she agrees to fly away with him, bringing her younger brothers along.

The middle Darling child, a practical, self-important boy fond of playing at pirates and adventures in his top hat. He eagerly joins his sister and brother in flying off to Neverland, keen to have real adventures of the kind he has only imagined.

The youngest Darling child, still very small and attached to his teddy bear and bedtime routines. Trusting and excitable, he follows his older siblings on the flight to Neverland, the littlest member of the adventure.

The loving, gentle mother of the Darling children, who tucks away their childish thoughts each night like a tidy nursery of the mind. Devoted to her children, she senses something odd about the boy who haunts the nursery window, and her sorrow and steadfast waiting shadow the whole adventure after the children vanish.

The Darling family's nurse, who happens to be a large Newfoundland dog. Faithful and conscientious, she tends the children's nursery with real devotion, disapproves of the strange visitor at the window, and is treated poorly by Mr. Darling on the fateful night the children fly away.

Peter Pan's fairy companion, a tiny, glowing sprite whose speech sounds like the tinkling of little bells. Common by fairy trade, a mender of pots and kettles, she is fiercely devoted to Peter and just as fiercely jealous of Wendy, small enough to hold only one feeling at a time and quick to spite. Her fairy dust is what lets the children fly.

The sinister, elegant captain of the pirates who infest the seas around Neverland, dressed in the fashion of a bygone age, with an iron hook in place of the hand Peter Pan long ago cut off and fed to a crocodile. Cruel, brooding, and obsessed with good form, he nurses a bitter hatred of Peter and schemes endlessly for revenge, feared by his own crew as much as by his enemies.

Captain Hook's boatswain, an oddly amiable pirate who is forever sewing and seems, to himself at least, a kindly sort even as he serves a murderous crew. Loyal to Hook in his bumbling way, he provides a strange note of comedy among the fearsome pirates.

The proud and brave princess of the native people of Neverland, a fearless young warrior admired and feared alike. When the pirates capture and endanger her, she becomes caught up in the struggle between Peter Pan and Captain Hook, and Peter's daring rescue wins her people's loyalty.

The great crocodile that once ate Captain Hook's severed hand and has hungered for the rest of him ever since, following him about in hope of finishing the meal. Having also swallowed a ticking clock, it announces its approach with a steady tick-tock, the one sound that fills the dreaded Hook with terror.
