Picnic at Hanging Rock recap

On Valentine's Day 1900, pupils from Appleyard College picnic at Hanging Rock. Miranda, Marion, Irma, and Edith climb the formation; Edith returns terrified, while the other three vanish. She remembers nothing that explains the others' fate. The mystery brings scrutiny and financial decline to the school, while the absent Miranda's closest friend, orphan Sara Waybourne, suffers under headmistress Mrs Appleyard. Irma eventually leaves after her classmates turn on her for having no answers. Sara then disappears; Mrs Appleyard lies that a guardian collected her, but Sara is found dead on the school grounds. Mrs Appleyard goes to Hanging Rock and dies in a fall. The school closes and later burns, while Miranda, Marion, and Miss McCraw remain missing and the Rock yields no explanation.

On Valentine's Day 1900, Mrs Appleyard permits most of the pupils at her isolated girls' school to take a supervised picnic to Hanging Rock. The orphan Sara Waybourne is kept behind as punishment, separating her from Miranda, the older girl she loves and idealizes. At the picnic the heat, silence, and stopped watches make ordinary time feel unreliable. Miranda, Marion Quade, and Irma Leopold receive permission to explore the lower slopes, with younger Edith Horton following. The four climb higher than expected. Edith becomes frightened and runs back screaming, unable to give a clear account. Miranda, Marion, and Irma do not return. Mathematics mistress Greta McCraw has also left the picnic ground alone and cannot be found.

The school party returns late and in confusion, and the disappearances prompt an extensive search by police, local residents, and Aboriginal trackers. No clothing, tracks, or bodies provide a useful trail. Edith recalls fragments but cannot explain what she saw, while the story attracts public attention that Mrs Appleyard fears will damage the college. Michael Fitzhubert, a young English visitor who watched the girls at the picnic, cannot abandon the image of Miranda. He goes onto the Rock to search independently. When he fails to return, his friend Albert Crundall follows and finds him injured and barely able to communicate, clutching a scrap that suggests he discovered something beyond the official search area.

Using Michael's clue, Albert helps the searchers find Irma alive on the Rock. She is injured and weakened but bears no obvious marks that explain the length of her disappearance. At the Fitzhubert household she slowly recovers under medical care. Irma has no memory of where she went, what happened to her companions, or how she survived. Michael's concern for her grows, although his fascination began with Miranda and remains connected to the unresolved mystery. Police renew their efforts but find no trace of Miranda, Marion, or Miss McCraw. Irma's recovery, instead of supplying an answer, makes the case stranger.

Irma visits Appleyard College before leaving. Her former classmates, desperate for an explanation and distressed by the continuing absence of the others, crowd around her and turn accusatory when she cannot remember. The encounter becomes violent before staff intervene. Irma departs shaken and eventually leaves Australia. The school's standing continues to decline as parents remove pupils and rumors spread. Mrs Appleyard answers the crisis with greater control, concealing financial trouble and directing particular hostility toward Sara. Sara continues to mourn Miranda and is threatened with removal from school because her fees have not been paid.

Appleyard College steadily empties. Accidents and departures among the staff deepen the sense that the institution is breaking apart, while the inquiry into Hanging Rock produces no solution. Mrs Appleyard claims that arrangements have been made for Sara to leave with her guardian, but people who care about the girl have reason to doubt the account. Sara is no longer seen, and the headmistress relies on her authority to prevent close questioning. Michael, Albert, Irma, and the school community all move into changed lives, but none possesses the missing knowledge that would explain the picnic.

The gardener discovers that Sara did not leave with a guardian: she is dead on the college grounds, and Mrs Appleyard's story was a lie. With the school ruined and her control collapsing, Mrs Appleyard travels to Hanging Rock. She dies after falling from a high point on the formation, whether by intention or accident remaining uncertain. Appleyard College closes, and the abandoned building is later destroyed by fire. Irma survives but never recovers an explanation; Michael and the other witnesses carry the effects of the event into their later lives. Miranda, Marion Quade, and Greta McCraw are never found. The investigation ends without resolving how they vanished, what Irma experienced, or whether the Rock's apparent suspension of ordinary time reflects anything beyond the survivors' fear and confusion.

Irma recovers physically but cannot explain what happened on the Rock. After a hostile farewell at the school, she leaves Australia, while Michael remains marked by the disappearance and by his brief connection with her. No trace of Miranda, Marion, or Greta McCraw is found. Appleyard College deteriorates as families withdraw pupils and misfortunes overtake members of staff. Mrs Appleyard falsely claims that Sara's guardian has collected her, but the gardener later finds Sara's body concealed on the grounds. The headmistress leaves for Hanging Rock and dies there after falling from a height, with the circumstances left uncertain. The college closes, and a later fire destroys the building. The central mystery remains unresolved: the missing women never return, the recovered girl has no usable memory, and neither the official investigation nor the surviving witnesses can make the events fit an ordinary explanation.
