A nine-year-old girl with bright red braids that stick straight out, a freckled face, mismatched stockings, and enormous shoes. She lives entirely alone in a ramshackle house called Villa Villekulla, with a horse she keeps on the porch and a little monkey for company, and a whole suitcase of gold coins to spend as she likes. Astonishingly strong, able to lift her horse with one hand, she answers to no adult, cooks and lives by her own rules, and tells tall, gleeful tales of far-off places. Her mother is dead and her sea-captain father was lost overboard, whom Pippi cheerfully insists has become a king on a distant island. Kind-hearted, fearless, and utterly unconventional, she turns everyday life upside down.

A polite, well-behaved boy who lives in the tidy house next door to Villa Villekulla with his sister. Ordinary and a little timid, he is delighted and amazed when the extraordinary Pippi moves in next door, and he and his sister quickly become her devoted friends and companions in her adventures.

Tommy's younger sister, a neat, careful, well-mannered girl who at first is a little frightened by Pippi's wildness but soon adores her. Together with her brother she is drawn happily into Pippi's chaotic, joyful world, discovering an excitement her orderly life never offered.

Pippi's pet monkey, a small creature she dresses in a little suit and hat. He lives with her at Villa Villekulla and accompanies her about, a comical companion to her adventures.

Pippi's horse, which she keeps on the front porch of Villa Villekulla and lifts effortlessly with her own hands when she pleases. A patient animal, it is part of the strange, upside-down household Pippi runs entirely by herself.

Pippi's father, a sea captain who was swept overboard during a storm and never returned. Pippi refuses to believe he drowned and insists instead that he floated to a South Sea island and became its king. He does not appear in person here, but he lives large in Pippi's cheerful stories and in her certainty that he will one day come sailing back for her.
