Jack's closest friend, a physician and natural philosopher with an Irish-Catalan background. Ashore with Jack during the peace, he is drawn to Diana Villiers. His medical calling and political contacts conceal capacities that do not belong to the ordinary life of a country guest.

The eldest Williams daughter, reserved, principled, and more perceptive than her quiet manner suggests. She and Jack are strongly attracted to one another, but convention, family pressure, and Jack's uncertain prospects impede a direct understanding.
