Pretties characters
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Maddy (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Known from earlier: the former surgeon who left the cities, whose research uncovered the brain lesions the pretty operation leaves behind, and who developed a two-pill cure she would only test on someone able to give informed consent.
David (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Known from earlier: the young man born outside the cities who guided runaways to the Smoke, whose father died after the settlement was raided, and who learned that Tally had come to them as an informant.
Tally Youngblood (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
Now a new pretty living in New Pretty Town, months after her operation. Her face and body have been remade, and her days are an unbroken round of parties, costumes and clique politics. She remembers the Smoke and the choice she made there only as blurred, unimportant facts, and she is happy in a hazy, incurious way. She is waiting to be taken into the Crims, the clique of former uglies who pride themselves on the tricks they pulled before their surgery.
Peris (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Tally's oldest friend, now a settled new pretty and a member of the Crims. Comfortable and easily distracted, he sponsors Tally's entry into the clique and is entirely content with the life the city has given him.
Shay (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Tally's friend from her ugly years, pretty now and a Crim. She has not entirely forgotten that Tally arrived at the Smoke as an informant, and although prettiness has smoothed most of it away, the resentment surfaces whenever Tally and Zane are together.
Zane (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
The recognized leader of the Crims, a new pretty who is restless in a way none of the others are. He invents dangerous games, resists the fog everyone else drifts in, and pushes the clique to behave as though they were still uglies. Tally is drawn to him at once, and he to her.
Croy (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 4
A runaway who was at the Smoke with Tally and is still ugly. He gets into New Pretty Town uninvited during a party, taking a serious risk to reach Tally, and tries to tell her about something she left for herself before her operation.
Fausto (Minor)
First appears in chapter 6
A member of the Crims, willing and dependable, who follows Zane and Tally into whatever they decide to do.
Dr. Cable (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 20
The head of Special Circumstances, whose surgery has made her frightening rather than beautiful. She takes a personal interest in Tally and in anything that disturbs the calm of New Pretty Town.
Andrew Simpson Smith (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 30
A young hunter from a village outside the cities, raised in a deliberately pre-technological culture and taught to treat people who come out of the sky as gods. He finds Tally in the wild, shelters her, and slowly grasps how much of what his people believe has been arranged for them.
