The youngest Peaceful brother and the novel's narrator. He spends a sleepless night deliberately revisiting his life, beginning with his Devon childhood and the death of his father. Sensitive and observant, he carries a private burden of guilt and measures himself against his bolder brother Charlie.

Tommo's older brother, protective, confident, and ready to challenge unfair authority. Charlie looks after Tommo at school and at home, even when doing so brings punishment on himself. The brothers are exceptionally close, though Tommo sometimes envies Charlie's courage and ease with other people.

The eldest Peaceful brother. Brain damage from childhood meningitis has left him with learning difficulties, but he is affectionate, physically strong, and deeply responsive to animals, music, and the natural world. His family protects him from the cruelty and impatience of others.

A girl who befriends Tommo and Charlie at school. Warm, spirited, and willing to stand beside the brothers when others mock or punish them, she soon becomes central to their shared childhood.

The Peaceful brothers' widowed mother, loving and resilient. After her husband's death she works hard to keep the family together in their tied cottage and defends Big Joe from those who treat him as a burden.

Tommo's father, a forestry worker on the Colonel's estate. His death beneath a falling tree while protecting Tommo becomes the defining sorrow of Tommo's early life and the source of guilt the boy keeps secret.

A harsh schoolmaster who uses humiliation and physical punishment freely. He singles out Big Joe and frightens Tommo, while Charlie's refusal to submit to him establishes the older brother as Tommo's defender.

The wealthy landowner who controls the estate, the Peaceful family's cottage, and much of the available work in the village. Formal and domineering, he expects obedience from the family and treats resistance as ingratitude.

A severe older relative brought into the Peaceful household after Father's death. The boys privately call her Grandma Wolf. She is cold toward Big Joe, imposes rigid discipline, and makes the cottage an unhappy place while Mother is working.

A dog taken in and loved by the Peaceful family, especially Big Joe. Her place in the household provides companionship and also exposes the family's vulnerability to the Colonel's power.

The brothers' brutal army sergeant. Hanley uses drills, insults, and punishment to demand instant obedience from recruits. His authority turns Charlie's lifelong instinct to resist bullying into a dangerous liability.

An officer under whom Tommo and Charlie serve in France. Captain Wilkes treats the men with greater decency than Sergeant Hanley and earns their respect through calm, humane leadership.
