Prometheus Bound recap

Zeus punishes the Titan Prometheus for aiding humanity, especially for stealing fire, by having Hephaestus chain him to a rock under the supervision of Kratos and Bia. Prometheus tells the sympathetic Oceanids how his gifts taught mortals the arts needed for civilized life, and he rejects Oceanus's offer to seek a compromise. The tormented wanderer Io arrives, and Prometheus recounts both her future trials and the eventual importance of her descendants. He also knows of a marriage that could produce a son capable of overthrowing Zeus. When Hermes demands that he disclose the secret, Prometheus refuses. Zeus answers with a violent storm that casts Prometheus and the Oceanids into the depths. The play ends with Prometheus still captive and suffering, but neither submissive nor deprived of the dangerous knowledge that gives him hope of an eventual change in power.

At the edge of the world, Kratos and Bia bring Prometheus to a barren rock where Hephaestus reluctantly chains him at Zeus's command. Prometheus has angered the new ruler by protecting mortals and giving them fire. Once his guards leave, a chorus of Oceanids hears his lament and comes to learn why he is being punished. Prometheus explains that he helped Zeus defeat the older divine regime but opposed Zeus's plan to destroy humanity. His gifts gave mortals knowledge, practical arts, and hope. Oceanus offers to intercede, but Prometheus sends him away rather than expose him to danger. Io then arrives in the midst of her divinely imposed wandering. Prometheus describes the hardships still before her and says that one of her distant descendants will eventually free him. He also reveals that he knows of a marriage capable of producing a child stronger than Zeus. Hermes appears and demands the prophecy's details. Prometheus refuses despite threats of harsher torment. The Oceanids stay with him as a storm sent by Zeus tears open the earth and hurls the captive into the depths. Prometheus ends the play still defiant, still imprisoned, and still holding the secret Zeus wants.

Hermes orders Prometheus to reveal the marriage that, according to his secret prophecy, could cost Zeus his power. Prometheus refuses even when Hermes warns that Zeus will answer with a storm, bury him under the rock, and later send an eagle to consume his liver repeatedly. The Oceanids are urged to leave but choose to remain beside him. Zeus then makes good on the immediate threat: thunder, lightning, wind, and convulsion engulf the scene, and Prometheus descends into the abyss still protesting the injustice done to him. He remains unbroken and keeps the prophecy to himself. The drama therefore closes without reconciliation or release; the prisoner suffers a fresh punishment, Zeus's rule remains secure for the moment, and the knowledge that could endanger that rule remains Prometheus's only leverage.
