His hints are sparse and deliberate, as if he already knows more than he can say, and his trust in Harry - rare among the Council's leadership - carries its own weight of expectation.

Harry's half-brother, the White Court vampire, still nominally sharing Harry's apartment but increasingly absent and evasive about where his money and time are going. Whatever he is hiding, his loyalty is not in question: when Harry mounts the most dangerous rescue of his life, Thomas is beside him without being asked.

The onetime nervous changeling mechanic, now the Summer Knight - the Summer Court's mortal champion, grown into a wiry confidence that sits strangely on Harry's memory of him. Fix serves Lily with total devotion, and like her he is bound in what he may reveal. His transformation since the Stone Table is a quiet reminder of what the Courts' power does to the mortals who take it up.

The greatest of the fetches sent out of Winter: a towering shape-shifting horror that wears the forms of fear itself. The Scarecrow leads the phobophages - spirit predators that take the shapes of horror-movie monsters and feed on terror - hunting a specific quarry in Chicago, and it is strong enough to go through a Warden of the White Council to get there. It answers to power deep inside Arctis Tor, Winter's capital.
