Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Holly Kennedy (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A young Dublin widow whose husband Gerry has recently died after a brain tumor. Grief has reduced her world to their house and the objects he left behind, and she cannot yet imagine a future not organized around their marriage.

Gerry Kennedy (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Holly's late husband and companion since their school years. Playful and attentive during their marriage, he remains vividly present in Holly's memories as she struggles to accept his death.

Sharon McCarthy (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

One of Holly's closest friends, direct and protective, who is married to John. Sharon refuses to let Holly disappear entirely into mourning and provides companionship without expecting her recovery to follow a simple timetable.

Denise Hennessey (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Holly's close friend, energetic and eager for romance. Denise involves Holly in nights out and social plans, sometimes pushing harder than Holly can bear, while remaining a dependable part of the circle carrying her through the year.

John McCarthy (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

Sharon's husband and one of Gerry's close friends. He grieves Gerry while trying to support both Holly and Sharon, and his presence reminds Holly that she is not the only person whose life has been altered by the loss.

Elizabeth (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Holly's mother, who brings her the package Gerry arranged to have delivered. Warm but practical, she gives Holly room to mourn while steadily drawing her back toward family life.

Frank (Minor)

First appears in chapter 3

Holly's father, part of the large and sometimes overwhelming family that gathers around her after Gerry's death. His steady affection helps anchor the household while everyone adjusts to Holly's changed future.

Richard (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

Holly's older brother, a serious and conventional family man whose restrained manner can appear distant beside his louder siblings. Holly gradually sees more of the pressures and disappointments beneath his reserve.

Jack (Minor)

First appears in chapter 3

One of Holly's brothers, sociable and familiar with Gerry as part of the family's shared circle. He helps preserve the ordinary family relationships that grief initially makes difficult for Holly to rejoin.

Declan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

Holly's younger brother, an aspiring filmmaker. His creative ambitions are sometimes dismissed by the family, but his attention to other people's experiences gives him a meaningful way to respond to Gerry's death.

Ciara (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

Holly's adventurous younger sister, newly returned from traveling abroad. Ciara's restless independence contrasts with Holly's attachment to the life she shared with Gerry, though both are trying to work out where they belong.

Daniel Connelly (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

The owner of a pub Holly visits with her friends. Daniel is thoughtful, attentive, and easy to talk to, giving Holly company that is not rooted in memories of Gerry's illness.

Tom O'Connor (Minor)

First appears in chapter 20

A man Denise meets during the year after Gerry's death. He takes a clear interest in her and begins spending time with Holly's close circle of friends.
