Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Teppic (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
Pteppic, crown prince of the small, ancient river kingdom of Djelibeybi, sent abroad to be trained at the Assassins' Guild in Ankh-Morpork. Caught between his modern education and the weight of his homeland's seven thousand years of tradition, he is thoughtful and reluctant, more comfortable solving practical problems than playing the role of god-king he is about to inherit.
Chidder (Minor)
Appears from the start
A fellow student at the Assassins' Guild, the son of a wealthy merchant family, who becomes Teppic's closest friend during his training. Worldly and enterprising, he later helps Teppic when he needs allies from outside the kingdom.
Mericet (Minor)
Appears from the start
A gaunt, exacting examiner at the Assassins' Guild who conducts Teppic's final test, the practical examination that decides whether a student graduates as a qualified assassin.
King Teppicymon XXVII (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Teppic's father and the reigning god-king of Djelibeybi, worn down by the demands of divine rule and increasingly convinced that he is a seabird. His death sets the plot in motion, and his spirit remains uncomfortably conscious inside his own mummified body, distressed by the funerary rites performed upon it.
Dios (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 2
The high priest of Djelibeybi, an old man who has served the kingdom and its gods for longer than anyone can remember. He is the true power behind the throne, administering every ritual and custom with absolute devotion to tradition, and he expects the new king to be a figurehead who does as the rites require.
Ptraci (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
A handmaiden of the late king, spirited and outspoken, who under Djelibeybi's customs is to be entombed alive to serve the dead pharaoh. Teppic saves her from that fate, and she proves stubborn, practical, and unwilling to accept the kingdom's traditions without question.
Ptaclusp (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
The kingdom's master pyramid-builder, a businessman contracted to raise the enormous pyramid for the dead king. He works alongside his two sons, one an architect and one an accountant, and finds his trade colliding with the strange effects that pyramids unleash.
You Bastard (Minor)
First appears in chapter 2
A camel of the kingdom who happens to be the greatest mathematician on the Disc, working through complex calculations in his head while appearing to do nothing but chew and spit.
