In short (whole book)
After the Granite is destroyed by a ship carrying what appear to be Verity weapons, Dash traces the Golden through ancient skyhook sites and evidence of a conflict within their ranks. Amy and Conover join the mech force, and wreckage at Typhoon proves that humans using Golden technology fought other Golden forces. The escaped Nathis has allied the Spiral Collectors with the Golden, while later battlefields show the Verity attacking Golden ships. A recovered micro-core reveals that skyhooks conceal Q-cores inside gas giants and that retrieving them requires dangerous backward time displacement. Cygnus attacks the Clan Shirna force at Jabberwock, where Dash kills its commander with help from a freed Golden, though Nathis remains at large. After the costly victory, Dash and Sentinel test the Stardiver. They return from a gas giant with two working Q-cores, leaving Cygnus with a powerful new supply route and an unresolved war.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Dash, also known as Newton Sawyer, became the Messenger and the pilot of the archetype, working with Sentinel to lead the Cygnus Realm against the Golden and their allied forces. Leira serves as his deputy and pilots Swift. Benzel, Wei Ping, Ragsdale, Kai, Viktor, Amy, and Conover are among the people supporting the growing war effort, while Custodian manages the forge and its unseen technology. Cygnus previously captured Nathis, the indoctrinated adopted human daughter of the Clan Shirna leader, and transferred her to STA custody rather than kill or imprison her indefinitely. Amy is expected to receive treatment and repairs, and Conover still owes an obligation to Pinetti. The Golden threat remains active, and Cygnus is still building the people, ships, mechs, and industrial capacity needed to confront it.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
The cargo hauler Granite sends a broken distress call, but Dash arrives only after its anti-deuterium containment fails and destroys the ship. Evidence shows that the crew had made an unauthorized cargo run and had been pursued by an unknown black warship carrying probable Verity weapons. Enhanced imagery also reveals a living Golden aboard the attacker. The discovery turns attention toward the galactic core, where known Verity systems appear concentrated. During a salvage mission near a brown dwarf, hidden Golden defenses nearly destroy the Rockhound, but Dash protects the crew while Leira and Sentinel help the vessel escape. The recovered wreckage belongs to a dark-metal skyhook of unknown purpose. Custodian then opens a restricted archive and reveals the historic scale of Golden conquest and extermination. The Messenger's next task is not merely to win isolated battles but to expand Cygnus through anchors that combine factories, bases, and command centers under independent leaders. A possible second Golden installation leads Dash and Leira to Gale, where Director Powell accepts their warning and considers a food-for-helium-3 partnership.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
On Gale, Dash's team locates an immense structure far below the pressure limit of the archetype. A smaller gas-giant target appears recoverable if Cygnus can obtain enough monofilament cable, so Benzel takes Dash and Leira to Kapok. His concealed dispute with the local factory operator causes an ambush, but Dash negotiates for her cable stock in exchange for a ten-percent share of the recovery. A Golden drone and additional skyhook wreckage persuade the operator to offer her syndicate's contacts as possible allies. Amy and Conover complete their melds with Talon and Pulsar, doubling Cygnus's mech force. A knife found among the wreckage suggests that Nathis or Clan Shirna had access to advanced Golden technology. During training, Conover detects an overlooked dark-metal signal at Typhoon. The four mechs destroy a Golden monitoring platform and uncover the remains of a human ship fitted with Golden systems intertwined with Golden wreckage. Dash retrieves its data core during a stellar eruption, and Conover shields him from lethal heat and radiation. The evidence raises a new possibility: humans and some Golden may have fought together against another Golden force.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
The Typhoon data confirms that human vessels equipped with Golden technology fought Golden ships after arriving from coreward space. Dash sends a force to seek possible dissidents, while Ragsdale warns that any apparent alliance could be a trap. The route crosses Spiral Collector territory. When the privateers attack, Cygnus defeats their first group, captures one of their two sister commanders, and pursues the rest. A larger engagement ends with the discovery of a communications relay protected by Golden encryption, proving that the Collectors are being directed or influenced by the Golden. After the remaining ground force refuses surrender, a dying fighter identifies Nathis as the escaped prisoner who recruited the Collectors by promising power and technology. Communications analysis narrows her traffic to three possible systems. At the active lead, Cygnus finds wreckage from a recent battle involving both Golden and Verity ships. Dash's force destroys a concealed Golden missile platform and recovers a data core referring to a modified shroud. A Golden-language distress signal follows, and Dash chooses to answer it. Dash and Leira then intervene against Verity attackers and recover a Golden body, confirming that the Golden and Verity are now fighting each other even though neither side can yet be trusted.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Sadiq's examination of the recovered Golden finds harvested nervous tissue and a concealed micro-core. Its schematics reveal that completed skyhooks store Q-cores inside gas giants and use direct translation to place or retrieve them. Custodian determines that the process necessarily moves the traveler backward in time. Dash authorizes a tightly restricted archetype prototype, promising Leira that he will use it only for brief retrieval operations. Before it can be tested, the patrol ship Venture disappears. Its debris is found at Jabberwock amid a fortified dark-metal fleet commanded by Nathis's adoptive daughter, who controls a living Golden through a cranial cable. Dash and Leira begin a romantic relationship but agree that preserving the war effort must come first. At Jabberwock, Benzel's fleet strikes and withdraws while all four mechs draw out the much larger enemy force. Benzel returns early, traps the reserves behind mines, and helps open a route to the carrier. Viktor pilots Slipwing through defensive fire to protect the attack. Dash crashes the damaged archetype into the carrier and confronts its commander. The captive Golden breaks free and turns against her, allowing Dash to restrain her until she dies. Cygnus wins and captures several ships, but the battle costs two capital ships, five smaller vessels, and many lives.
Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)
The forge treats more than fifty casualties from Jabberwock while Cygnus begins repairing its battered force. Shara, recovered after Ravager's destruction, receives temporary command-center work and is expected to join Wei Ping's crew. The captured carrier and other prizes remain secondary to restoring existing ships and production. The victory kills the Clan Shirna commander but does not resolve the war: Nathis remains free, possible Golden dissidents have not been located, and the Verity-Golden split is still dangerous and unclear. Dash orders Custodian to install the Stardiver prototype in the repaired archetype. Leira fears both the gas-giant dive and the time-displacement mechanism, but accepts that recovered Q-cores could greatly accelerate the forge. She and Dash affirm their relationship while keeping their military responsibilities first. For the test, Talon, Swift, Herald, and Slipwing guard the operation from orbit. Sentinel performs two tightly timed translations, placing the archetype inside a gas giant and then returning it after Dash retrieves two Q-cores from a buried skyhook. Dash survives and both Q-cores work, although the archetype comes back badly warped and gouged. Cygnus ends the campaign with a proven but hazardous way to obtain the components needed for its expanding war effort.
How does it end? (ending)
Cygnus wins the battle at Jabberwock but loses two capital ships, five smaller vessels, and dozens of personnel. The Clan Shirna commander dies aboard her carrier after a captive Golden breaks free and helps Dash, providing direct evidence that a Golden can oppose the campaign of extermination. Nathis remains free, and no Golden or Verity faction has yet become a trusted ally. Shara survives Ravager's destruction and is assigned temporary command-center work before joining Wei Ping's Retribution crew. The captured enemy ships await lower-priority repairs while Cygnus restores its existing force. Dash and Leira are openly together but agree that the war takes precedence. Dash and Sentinel then use the Stardiver to enter a gas giant, recover two functional Q-cores from a buried skyhook, and return to the forge. The archetype is badly deformed, but the retrieval proves that Cygnus can obtain more Q-cores through controlled negative-time translation. The anchor network, the coreward dissidents, the purpose of the skyhooks, and the wider Golden-Verity conflict all remain open.
