Elaine (Protagonist)

A sixteen-year-old Ranger entering the Academy after the members of her former team go their separate ways. Her classes are Constellation of the Healer and Pyromancer.

Artemis (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Elaine's former Ranger teammate and combat mentor. Newly retired from active service, Artemis is establishing the School of Sorcery and Spellcraft while also taking a part-time teaching position at Ranger Academy.

A bare-knuckle adventurer hired to escort Elaine on her return from Deva. She heals his old fractures as part of their arrangement, restoring injuries that had persisted from his fighting career before he joins the three-person group.

Cassia (Supporting)

A knife fighter considered for Elaine's hired escort. The loss of an arm had reduced her professional standing, but Elaine restores the limb and enables her to work again at her former rank as part of the return journey.

Atticus (Minor)

A ranger hired as part of Elaine's three-person escort. He travels with Alpha, a fire-breathing proto-avis companion, and gives the party a ranged specialist while they search for a merchant vessel bound for the capital.

Pirate captain (Antagonist)

The mist-using captain of the slavers who attacked Elaine's ship. During a negotiated withdrawal, he launches a concealed harpoon strike from behind, turning the parley into another attempt to kill her.

Autumn (Supporting)

Neptune's commercially capable daughter, who recognizes the purpose of Elaine's market stall and asks to study healing. She begins by helping run the stall while Elaine teaches her diagnosis, efficient mana use, and basic healing elements.

Neptune (Minor)

A fruit merchant working beside Elaine's healing stall and the father of Autumn. His nearby business brings the prospective student into Elaine's orbit and gives him a parental interest in any lasting training arrangement.

Catastrophe (Minor)

Hunting's highly intelligent abelisaurus companion and lifelong bonded partner. Their shared bond changes both of them, making Catastrophe more energetic and less governed by instinct while also strengthening Hunting physically.

The high-level mage who leads the Adventurer's Guild office Elaine approaches. The Guildmaster hears her requested penalties for the escort that failed her and handles her proposed bounty for a rare companion.

A person Elaine lost before this book and the namesake of her healing oath. That continuing obligation shapes when and how Elaine must heal, making Lyra's memory part of every attempt to reconcile Ranger danger with a healer's duties.

Iona's Valkyrie mentor, who trains the young squire and equips her before the defense of Wabi Pass. She also directs Iona to advance her classes without waiting for formal permission as the approaching battle leaves no time for ordinary procedure.

The leader of the Valkyrie order and commander of its defense at Wabi Pass. She commits the available Valkyries, squires, and companions to hold the narrow route while the order seeks reinforcements against a much larger goblin horde.

Selene and Lunaris (Supporting)

Two figures who appear to Iona before the battle at Wabi Pass. They tell her that Lux is dead and grant her the ability to perceive system information and to understand and speak every language, transforming what she can know and communicate.
