In short (whole book)

After the Dao Storm, Ashlock rebuilds Ashfallen beneath Red Vine Peak, extends his demonic-tree network across Darklight City, and develops an alchemy enterprise with Redclaw and Silverspire support. A Voidmind elder discovers him but is defeated, while the elder's niece Elaine eventually joins Ashfallen. The sect survives a Star Core worm, gains strength in the Mystic Realm, and prepares Stella Crestfallen for an alchemy tournament under the alias Roselyn. Dante Voidmind turns the tournament into an invasion. Ashlock kills Theron Skyrend, Stella kills Kassandra Skyrend, Larry kills Elder Lillian, Maple consumes Elder Elias, and the Void Crystal removes Elder Lucian while maiming Dante. Magnus Redclaw and Sebastian Silverspire blame the Skyrend deaths on Voidmind, sending Demetrios Skyrend after Dante. Ashfallen ends stronger, with Roderick Terraforge imprisoned, Kane Azurecrest provisionally sheltered, and White Stone Palace designated as a public recruitment and alchemy center.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Ashlock lived as a demonic tree at Red Vine Peak and became the hidden patriarch of Ashfallen. The sect's authority remained concealed from outsiders even as it gained influence through the allied Redclaw family in Darklight City. Stella Crestfallen, Ashlock's adoptive daughter and longstanding companion, grew up beside him and developed spatial cultivation. She served as Ashfallen's public representative, allowing the tree to direct events without openly revealing his position. Diana Ravenborne became another trusted companion and an assassin-trained protector of the group. The giant spider Larry guarded Ashlock and the sect, while Senior Lee remained a powerful figure associated with Ashlock's earlier circumstances. These relationships gave Ashfallen a capable inner circle but also made secrecy central to its survival. The Dao Storm then damaged Red Vine Peak, weakened Ashlock, and forced the Redclaws to shelter beneath the mountain. At the start of the new crisis, Ashfallen must recover its strength, protect its displaced allies, and rebuild without exposing the demonic tree at the center of its power.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

So far this book: Ashlock awakens weakened after the Dao Storm and abandons plans to rebuild an exposed pavilion. Diana Ravenborne recruits Douglas Terraforge, a debt-burdened Earth cultivator who swears a binding Ashfallen oath and excavates an escape route for the Redclaws sheltering beneath Red Vine Peak. Douglas also repairs Stella Crestfallen's cultivation formation and begins teaching her modern formation work. During his attempt to settle his debts, his lender Venik attacks him. Diana pursues Venik, learns that his spectral guardian is the sister sacrificed by their family, kills the guardian, and returns with Venik's head. Meanwhile, Stella completes a costly formation that feeds energy directly to Ashlock's roots. Ashlock recovers his system, advances to the second stage of the Star Core Realm, and gains a convenient way to write messages on his bark. He also discovers that he can communicate with the many demonic trees created in Darklight City by the storm. Rather than allow their destruction, he begins teaching them to stop producing poison and corrosive fluid. The sect is left without spirit stones, and its planned alchemy tournament is delayed just as a noble family approaches the city.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

Ashlock and the Redclaws protect Darklight City's demonic trees through fines and a paid relocation service, turning the network into both civic infrastructure and portal anchors. The delayed alchemy tournament becomes a recruitment opportunity. Ryker and Sebastian Silverspire arrive seeking a profitable venture, and Ashfallen proposes a secret alchemy business financed by Ryker. While Douglas Terraforge clears city streets, Ashlock reshapes the storm-grown trees with edible mushrooms and blossoms. These coordinated changes attract the attention of Darklight Academy's Voidmind head librarian. The elder follows a relocation rift to Ashlock, identifies his divine eye, and tries to take it to overcome his own cultivation barrier. Stella Crestfallen, Larry, and Maple intervene. Maple traps the fleeing elder inside a void bubble, which Ashlock imprisons within his trunk. Ashlock strips the captive's artifacts and extracts basic alchemy information before using cursed sap against him. The elder dies while resisting transformation, flooding Ashlock's soul with Void energy. Ashlock survives by merging that energy into his Devour skill, creating Consuming Abyss. Its new Void Tendrils can bypass ordinary defenses at close range, but their use consumes sacrificial credits, leaving the power reserved for emergencies.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Ashlock distributes useful artifacts from the dead Voidmind elder and hides Red Vine Peak behind a costly spatial illusion. Sparring with Stella Crestfallen improves his vine combat and helps her approach the Star Core Realm. Kaida evolves toward an ink-serpent path, while Douglas Terraforge finishes clearing Darklight City's roads and begins converting the mine into an alchemy workshop. In Slymere, the Voidmind family notices that its elder has vanished. Diana Ravenborne abducts his niece Elaine Voidmind before she can report what she knows. Elaine awakens inside Ashfallen's cavern, fails an escape challenge when Larry returns her through a portal, and is put to work with Douglas. Stella tells her that her uncle is dead and offers a possible route into Ashfallen if she remains hidden. Ryker and Sebastian Silverspire inspect the cavern despite Elaine's unresolved status and invest one thousand high-grade spirit stones and substantial money for a fifteen-percent share, with the Silverspire name attached to the tournament. Elaine declines to expose her captors to them. As Stella begins a permanent concealment array, Ashlock discovers a miles-long Star Core worm near his territory. He injures it through portals, but its poison reaches Red Vine Peak and the creature escapes underground.

Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)

The Star Core worm erupts inside Darklight City and then turns toward Red Vine Peak. Ashlock attempts to lure it away, but his reserves are depleted by producing skill fruit for his allies. The worm destroys his key-gathering formation and survives losing its head, forcing the sect to postpone the hunt until it can gain strength in the Mystic Realm. Kaida completes another evolution and helps preserve the worm's remains. Ashlock offers Elaine Voidmind membership for a loyalty oath, but she refuses to betray her family. They settle on a binding secrecy oath instead, and Stella Crestfallen reveals that Ashlock himself is Ashfallen's patriarch. Elaine begins to view the sect more favorably after receiving a rare cultivation resource, although her approaching brother remains a danger. The rebuilt formations restore concealment and energy gathering. Elaine receives basic sword training but is excluded from the dangerous expedition. The Redclaw Grand Elder arrives with the family's strongest available members. Ashlock's truffles remove heart demons and improve cultivation foundations, freeing Elder Mo's blocked path. The Redclaws recommit to Ashfallen's plan to remain at Red Vine Peak through the future Beasttide, and the Mystic Realm party prepares to depart.

Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)

Ashlock opens the Mystic Realm, where time passes faster for the expedition. Stella Crestfallen enters a spatial and lightning pocket realm to form her Star Core. Elder Mo, Amber, and the Redclaw Grand Elder find a Monarch Realm forging trial, which Elder Mo wins through patience and discipline. Diana Ravenborne advances to the peak of the Soul Fire Realm while hiding a demonic transformation, and Douglas Terraforge rises three stages in an Earth realm. Outside, Elaine Voidmind uses a comprehension fruit to master ancient runes while Ashlock and Larry face a swarm led by the returning Star Core worm. The leader is accidentally drawn into the Mystic Realm. Ashlock's high-grade reward, Progeny Dominion, strengthens his root network, raises his cultivation by one Star Core stage, and lets him operate a linked offspring as an avatar at risk to his soul. The worm splits across several pocket realms. Diana destroys one segment, Stella completes her Star Core and kills another, and Ashlock rescues the badly injured Douglas from a third. When the realm closes, the remaining pieces emerge. Ashlock consumes them and upgrades his corpse technique into Necroflora Sovereign, then reanimates the worm as a Star Core Ent servant.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Senior Lee arrives to investigate the dead Voidmind elder. He accepts that the elder threatened Ashfallen, identifies Maple as a World Walker confined to squirrel form, and removes a lingering fragment of the elder's soul from Ashlock. Using a celestial void-leviathan corpse and Ashlock's Necroflora Sovereign, Senior Lee restores the elder in a new Ent body and leaves the lower realm with him. Ashlock names the remaining autonomous leviathan Ent Titus and also transforms the slime Bob, though Bob requires a continual energy supply. Progeny Dominion lets Ashlock fight through a rooted offspring while retaining his main viewpoint. A spar against Titus forces Diana Ravenborne to expose her demon form and lose control. Stella Crestfallen learns that she may possess a dormant ruler-like bloodline of her own. Ashfallen accepts Diana after she recovers, but control of her transformation remains unresolved. Elaine Voidmind chooses to swear a full loyalty oath so she can return to teaching at Darklight Academy, continue her research, and meet her approaching brother. She and Douglas Terraforge also begin a relationship. Kaida develops into an ink, water, and darkness serpent whose writing can alter reality. Dante Voidmind then arrives in Darklight City and publicly notices Elaine's dramatic physical transformation.

Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)

Dante Voidmind interrogates Elaine inside the family manor. She protects Ashfallen with a story about a secret realm, then learns that Dante intends to seize Darklight City and kill the Redclaws after the tournament. Elder Margret extracts her under the pretense of tournament work, allowing Elaine to warn Ashfallen in writing and remain near Dante as a covert source. Ashlock responds by accelerating the sect's alchemy plans. Douglas Terraforge converts the cavern into a two-level farm, and Ashlock fills it with key-flowing grass, starlight lotuses, mushrooms, and cauldron fruits. Elder Margret brings the Redclaw twins Oliver and Olivia as trainees. Her first body-strengthening pill made with the farm's perfect plants and Ashlock's soul fire gains effects far above the ordinary result. Stella Crestfallen then attempts alchemy for the first time, using spatial control to remove impurities and producing a pill judged at least high-grade mortal tier. Her aptitude gives Ashfallen a potential tournament entrant as well as a commercial advantage. Elder Mo demonstrates a spirit weapon carrying his battlefield memories, while the Redclaws accept an order to learn ancient runes. With dragon marrow still limiting pill production, Stella, the twins, and Titus leave to hunt suitable monsters.

Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)

Stella Crestfallen develops a portal-sword technique during the monster hunt, while Titus and the Redclaw twins help preserve likely sources of dragon marrow. Ashlock acquires Abyssal Whispers, a dangerous mental attack that can also carry telepathic speech. Stella experiments with Mind Fortress fruit and Dreamweaver orchids until she creates pills that make the link survivable, though still painful. Theron and Kassandra Skyrend arrive for the alchemy tournament, and Elaine Voidmind grows suspicious that Dante has searched or watched her academy study. At a political feast, Diana Ravenborne disguises Stella with a mask and Kaida's temporary ink markings. Stella calls herself Roselyn when Theron demands her identity. After the Skyrends insult the Redclaws, Stella redirects Theron's attack and withstands the siblings' lightning. Kassandra answers the confrontation by challenging Roselyn to prove herself in the alchemy tournament, and Stella accepts. The incident unexpectedly raises the Redclaws' standing among other noble families. Elder Margret prepares Stella for a preliminary that combines a theory question with ingredient purification. Kassandra passes with lightning, Dante Voidmind is called next, and Roselyn waits as the final noble candidate while protecting her assumed identity.

Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)

Dante Voidmind, Roderick Terraforge, Celeste Starweaver, and Kane Azurecrest pass the preliminary by different methods. Stella Crestfallen receives a nearly pure ingredient that cannot yield the required impurity pile, but secretly adds impurities from other samples and forces the examiners to admit the test was rigged. Elder Margret verifies the evidence, securing Roselyn's place. Stella sends Maple after the corrupt examiners, and his intervention damages the Skyrend mansion. The resulting suspicion creates an opening for Ashfallen to frame Voidmind for the planned deaths of Theron and Kassandra Skyrend. Elaine reveals that Dante wants Darklight City's evacuation-airship allocation before the Beasttide, and Ashfallen's allies agree to the deception. In the tournament's first round, Kassandra disrupts Stella and Roderick destroys her cauldron. Elder Brent disqualifies him, Titus captures him, and Stella still places fifth with a rushed pill. Celeste wins the round ahead of Dante, Kassandra, and Kane. During the final, Stella completes a perfect Heavenly Purification Pill, but Kassandra makes a rival profound-tier pill. Stella enters a trance linked to an unexplained protective instinct and begins a more ambitious recipe from Elder Margret, with Ashlock rapidly growing the required plants as time runs out.

Story so far - through chapter 78 (this book)

Stella Crestfallen completes a spiritual nullification pill as Roselyn and places second behind Dante Voidmind, ahead of Kassandra Skyrend, Celeste Starweaver, and Kane Azurecrest. Dante then claims Darklight City for Voidmind and declares war when Magnus Redclaw refuses. Larry fills the arena with ash while Dante summons three Star Core elders. Using Progeny Dominion through a city tree, Ashlock kills Theron Skyrend and secures his body. Stella confronts Kassandra inside the ash and kills her after revealing her true name. Elder Lillian pursues and captures Stella, but Larry arrives and eats her. Maple consumes Elder Elias in a void domain. Lillian's death destabilizes the Void Crystal, which takes Elder Lucian and one of Dante's hands when it shatters. Demetrios Skyrend arrives seeking his children. Magnus and Sebastian Silverspire blame Voidmind and present Lillian's body as evidence. Dante sacrifices his remaining arm to survive Demetrios's attack and escapes toward Slymere, with Demetrios pursuing him and opening the intended conflict between the two families. Afterward, Kane reveals the Azurecrest family's forced sibling sacrifices and asks for protection. Ashlock lets him remain at White Stone Palace, keeps Roderick imprisoned in Titus's hand, and directs the Redclaws to turn the palace into a recruitment and alchemy center while Red Vine Peak remains reserved for Ashfallen's core.

How does it end? (ending)

Dante Voidmind's attempt to seize Darklight City collapses after Ashfallen turns the tournament arena into a prepared battlefield. Theron and Kassandra Skyrend are dead, as are the summoned Voidmind elders Lillian and Elias. The shattered Void Crystal takes Elder Lucian and one of Dante's hands. Dante sacrifices his remaining arm to survive Demetrios Skyrend's attack and escapes toward Slymere, with Demetrios in pursuit. Magnus Redclaw and Sebastian Silverspire sustain the false account that Voidmind killed the Skyrend siblings, leaving a wider family conflict likely. Stella returns to Red Vine Peak after placing second as Roselyn and killing Kassandra, an act that troubles her. Diana Ravenborne serves as Ashlock's direct representative, while Elaine Voidmind stays with Ashfallen and Douglas Terraforge instead of returning to her family. Kane Azurecrest is allowed to remain at White Stone Palace pending a decision on his request for protection. Roderick Terraforge remains alive in Titus's custody. Ashlock retains several enemy corpses and plans to expand recruitment, develop the alchemy operation, and train further before an unspecified Patriarch emerges from seclusion.
