He takes Valandor's body, infiltrates Ashfallen's territory, and spreads blood pills that turn vast numbers of civilians into controlled, explosive soldiers. Ashlock adopts Desolation Key to resist the storm and sever Vincent's blood links, while Stella and Morrigan deceive Vincent and investigate his network. When the Night of Reckoning begins, Ashfallen's allies and Mudcloaks contain the puppet horde as Ashlock's bastions battle Vincent. Ashlock invokes his pact with Maple by allowing Vincent to wound him. Maple removes one of Vincent's spiritual hearts, Bob serves as a false Stella, and the concealed Stella destroys Vincent's soul with her ether-key sword. Vincent dies, but his spirit enters the Sword of New Beginnings. Larry completes his evolution, and the still-advancing Beast Tide becomes Ashfallen's immediate threat.

Previously: Ashlock, a demonic tree and Nascent Soul cultivator, became the hidden ruler of Ashfallen and the power behind the All-Seeing Eye faith. Red Vine Peak serves as the center of his growing territory, supported by Stella, his adopted daughter and Ashfallen's princess, and by allies including Diana, Morrigan, Elaine, Douglas, Larry, Nox, the Redclaw family, and the Silverspires. Vincent Nightrose rules the Blood Lotus and maintains his strength by harvesting bloodlines. Stella is one of his targets, while Valandor, once known as the White Reaper, appears to have escaped Vincent's control and become her protector. Stella's ancestry remains uncertain: Janus Crestfallen is her apparent father, and her history may connect her to the World Tree and the Celestial Order. Ashlock's expanding sect has acquired cities, unusual servants, and powerful defenses, but its continued growth has drawn dangerous attention. As this volume begins, Vincent remains at large and Ashfallen must also face threats beyond the conflicts among cultivator families.

Ashlock confirms that a vast unnatural storm is driving a Beast Tide from the north. Because the storm disrupts his portals and makes sustained fighting too costly, he commits Ashfallen and its neighboring cities to defend rather than evacuate. Evander and Celeste Starweaver offer temporary cooperation, while Morrigan warns that Vincent Nightrose is a powerful Nascent Soul cultivator with several affinities. Ashlock then reveals to the Redclaw and Silverspire elders that there is no hidden immortal above him: the demonic tree himself rules Ashfallen and acts as the All-Seeing Eye. The allies accept the truth. Stella also confronts questions about her origin, including a possible World Tree connection and the survival of her apparent father, Janus Crestfallen. When Vincent summons the region's major families, Ashlock rejects Stella's offer to surrender herself. Stella and Valandor instead infiltrate Nightrose Castle, apparently destroy Vincent in his coffin, and escape through a spatial anchor. Ashfallen believes the assassination may have succeeded, but Vincent survives in another body and prepares to attend his own summit.

Ashfallen attends the summit despite doubts about Vincent's death. Nightrose guardians try to seize Stella and Diana, but Ashlock's Ents force a path into the city. At the castle, apparent family elders and even a false Diana prove to be blood-based imitations. Vincent uses gravity to trigger Ashfallen's extraction safeguards, destroys Hades with a prepared blood attack, and restrains Larry, though Larry's divine ash can permanently overcome Nightrose regeneration. Ashlock continues the confrontation through Anubis while searching for Vincent's real body. Vincent conceals illusion affinity behind a false claim of shadow powers and uses stolen Starweaver blood to examine possible futures. Destroyed clones damage his already unstable soul and weaken his hold over stolen bloodlines. Anubis locates his hidden chamber through Ashlock's cursed blood, but Vincent escapes beneath an illusion of a citywide catastrophe. Nightrose City is not actually destroyed, though the castle and ruling family are left in disarray. Vincent abandons the city and turns toward Darklight City, intending to reach Stella before fleeing the Beast Tide.

Ashlock uses the crisis in Nightrose City to establish the All-Seeing Eye, directing his vice-cult leader to win public support rather than compel worship. Her ritual unexpectedly summons Pluto, a hostile World Walker who damages the castle and kills civilians before Ashlock expels him by taking control of the cult leader's body. A system draw then produces an egoless, soul-eating wraith. Nox risks one of her two divided souls to control it, creating a mythical Netherwood Wraith avatar. She remains loyal but cannot fully command its hunger, so she leaves to hunt souls away from Ashlock while her other soul anchors her sanity in Tartarus. Ashfallen's cultists consolidate their hold on Nightrose City. Soon afterward, a Starweaver Grand Elder becomes a proxy for the heavens and attacks Ashlock with meteors. Ashlock repels the assault, kills the proxy, and transforms the remains into a cosmic Skyborne Bastion. The attack confirms that the heavens have noticed him. Vincent is still alive and expected to pursue Stella, so Ashlock begins preparing a trap while the Beast Tide continues its approach.

Ashfallen rebuilds Nightrose Castle as its new stronghold with Douglas, Stella's pet Guppy, and the Mudcloaks, whose hidden industrial complex reveals an unexpected capacity for construction and war. Larry begins an uncertain evolution that could raise him to the Monarch realm. In Darklight City, Valandor confronts Vincent and discovers that Vincent's old control was never removed. Vincent destroys Valandor's active soul and takes his body as a temporary vessel. Morrigan then pretends to hate Ashfallen and offers Vincent a path through Red Vine Peak's defenses. Stella recognizes the possession after finding Valandor's displaced soul in the ether. She preserves his weakened soul within herself, gains his Ether understanding, and helps construct a plan to lure Vincent into Tartarus. At the same time, Stella gives Ashlock the knowledge needed to replace his Spatial affinity with Desolation. The conversion ruins half of his inner world, but the resulting Desolation Field can selectively decay understood forces. Ashlock deploys it against the advancing storm, slowing the Beast Tide without harming his offspring, though sustaining the defense still consumes enormous reserves.

Stella investigates a blood illness spreading through Darklight City and traces it to Eyepatch, a rapidly expanding group distributing addictive blood pills through food and water. Disguised as a mortal, she infiltrates Moonlit Desires and uses its owner, Sullivan, to locate Eyepatch's hidden leadership. She coerces Sullivan into becoming her informant and concludes that the faceless leader is one of Vincent's blood clones. Meanwhile, Morrigan escorts a Valandor-shaped Vincent clone into Tartarus with the promise of access to Stella. The bait is Stella's severed arm. Morrigan reveals the deception, and Vincent destroys his own clone to escape through his surviving main body, losing part of his fragmented soul and some memories. Sol later reattaches Stella's arm. Vincent recognizes that Stella and Morrigan are working together but refuses to withdraw. His planned Night of Reckoning depends on the widespread blood-pill network, while Ashfallen still lacks a full picture of what the pills will do. Stella therefore continues the Eyepatch investigation as Ashlock begins preparing to understand and attack Vincent's blood-based links directly.

Ashlock studies Blood Dao so his Desolation Key can destroy Vincent's blood constructions and prevent another escape through substitute bodies. Stella and Sullivan locate the pill-production network beneath an influential residence, where Vincent drains prisoners to manufacture more pills. When Ashfallen raids the operation, Ashlock destroys a blood clone, but Vincent activates the Night of Reckoning. Millions of recipients in Darklight City and Ashfallen City become regenerating, explosive blood puppets and march toward Red Vine Peak. Ashlock can sever an individual link only by shattering the victim's cultivation, as happens when he frees Sullivan, and he cannot afford to save everyone while also delaying the Beast Tide. Redclaw fighters, Stella, Diana, Guppy, and the Mudcloaks therefore use lethal force to contain the horde. The Mudcloaks' armor, weapons, and ability to consume bodies prevent many explosions and stabilize the defense. Above them, Ashlock deploys his bastions against Vincent's gravity rings and illusion storm. The vice-cult leader briefly loses her mystic power after learning Ashlock can be injured, but recovers when she understands the All-Seeing Eye as an enduring shared ideal. Her restored rituals strengthen Ashfallen's defenders.

Douglas, Elaine, and three injured outer disciples become trapped in tunnels beneath the blood-puppet horde, but Douglas summons the Mudcloaks and fortifies their position until the armored force opens an escape route. In the main battle, Ashlock protects his bastions from Vincent's counterattack, then uses Orion, Erebus, void tendrils, and Abyssal Devourer to drain Vincent's gravity key and breach his illusion storm. Even impalement with the blood-iron sword cannot stop Vincent's blood regeneration. Vincent corrupts linked civilians to survive, seizes the sword, reaches Red Vine Peak, and wounds Ashlock. His apparent target, Stella, is actually Bob disguised with her blood and key. Ashlock allowed the wound so his mutual-protection pact would compel Maple to intervene. Maple assumes a humanoid form and consumes one of Vincent's spiritual hearts. Ashlock locks the remaining heartbeat inside his nascent inner world and drains Vincent while the real Stella attacks from concealment. Her ether-key sword cuts Vincent's soul apart, killing him. Ashlock consumes the remains, but Vincent's vengeful spirit enters the renamed Sword of New Beginnings. Larry completes his evolution after the fight. Vincent is dead, while the Beast Tide and storm remain the next immediate danger.

In the battle above Red Vine Peak, Ashlock drains Vincent's key and life force but cannot initially overcome his regeneration. Ashlock then permits Vincent to wound his trunk, forcing Maple to act under their mutual-protection pact. Maple removes one of Vincent's spiritual hearts, Ashlock locks down the remaining heartbeat, and Bob draws another attack while disguised as Stella. The real Stella strikes from concealment and cuts Vincent's soul apart with her ether-key sword. Ashlock consumes Vincent's remains, while Vincent's residual spirit enters the renamed Sword of New Beginnings. Larry completes his evolution too late to join the fight. Ashlock, Stella, Diana, Morrigan, Elaine, Douglas, Nox's divided selves, and their surviving allies remain with Ashfallen. Valandor's weakened soul remains inside Stella, Sullivan has lost his cultivation but is still owed freedom and wealth, and Nox's wraith form remains hungry and unstable. The Beast Tide and its unnatural storm are still approaching, leaving Ashfallen to prepare for the next war.
