A brash, unscrupulous tabloid reporter for a sensational newspaper who has long trailed Graham and the killings for lurid copy. He intrudes on the investigation, snapping photographs and printing exaggerated stories, and treats the murders as raw material for headlines. A solitary man who runs the night shift at a film-processing laboratory, revealed to the reader as the killer the FBI is hunting, a murderer who slaughters whole families by the light of the full moon. Born with a severe cleft lip and palate that repeated surgeries never fully mended, he grew up shamed and brutalized by a cruel grandmother, and he lives sealed off from ordinary human contact. Powerfully built and meticulous, he has come to believe he is undergoing a transformation into a fearsome being he calls the Red Dragon, an identity drawn from a haunting painting that consumes his private world.

A blind woman who works in the film-processing laboratory, independent, warm, and matter-of-fact about her disability. She takes an interest in the withdrawn, painfully shy Dolarhyde and draws him gently out of his isolation, unaware of the darkness inside him. Her kindness and directness offer him a taste of ordinary tenderness he has never known.
