Darrow is a Red, the lowest caste in a color-coded interplanetary society, mining beneath Mars in the belief that his people are preparing the planet for humankind. When his young wife Eo is executed for a small act of defiance and Darrow is hanged for burying her, the rebel Sons of Ares save his life and reveal the truth: Mars was terraformed generations ago, and the Reds are slaves kept in the dark. They surgically remake Darrow into a Gold, a member of the ruling elite, and send him to infiltrate the Institute, the brutal academy where young Golds compete in a year-long war game that decides their futures. Passing as one of them, Darrow rises to lead House Mars, gathering fierce allies like Sevro and the brilliant Mustang, but also making enemies. He wins the contest, survives a vengeful betrayal by his friend Cassius, and outmaneuvers a sadistic rival called the Jackal, revealed to be the son of the ArchGovernor of Mars. Claimed as a prize apprentice by that same ArchGovernor, Darrow secures exactly the position the rebellion wanted: a hidden enemy planted at the heart of Gold power.

Darrow is a Helldiver, one of the best young miners in the Red colony of Lykos, deep beneath the surface of Mars. His people believe they are heroic pioneers slowly making the planet habitable, and they endure hunger, danger, and the iron rule of the Golds above them. Darrow is happily married to Eo, who is bolder and more questioning than he is and who longs for a freer life. When she commits a small act of defiance, she is publicly executed, and when Darrow buries her body against the law, he too is hanged and left for dead. He is secretly cut down and revived by the Sons of Ares, a rebel network, whose agent Dancer shows him a devastating truth: Mars was made livable long ago, and the Reds have been kept enslaved in ignorance ever since. Grief-stricken and newly awake to the lie, Darrow agrees to become their weapon.

To strike at the Golds, the rebels must place one of their own among them. The Carver Mickey painstakingly and painfully remakes Darrow's body and biology so that he can pass as a Gold, the ruling caste he was raised to fear. After grueling preparation, Darrow tests into the Institute, the elite academy where young Golds are pitted against one another. Entry itself is lethal: in a culling ritual he is forced to kill another candidate to survive, an act that will haunt the story. Sorted into one of the great Houses, Darrow finds himself among proud, dangerous peers, hiding what he truly is while trying to understand the vicious rules of the world he has infiltrated.

The Institute's central trial is a sprawling war game in which the Houses conquer, enslave, and battle one another across a wilderness. Darrow's House falls under the brutal misrule of the domineering Titus, whose cruelty threatens to destroy it from within. Darrow challenges and unseats him, then sets about rebuilding the House into a disciplined force. He draws to himself unlikely allies, including the fierce, underestimated Sevro and the sharp-minded Mustang, and begins to win victories that spread his reputation. Passing as a natural-born leader of Golds, Darrow starts to earn a fearsome name in the contest even as he wrestles with the violence the role demands of him.

As the war game grinds on, Darrow's growing power provokes fiercer rivals, shifting alliances, and painful losses. He gathers a loyal core of friends, including the honorable Cassius au Bellona and the gentle poet Roque, and forges Sevro's raiders into a legend. But a cold, calculating enemy known as the Jackal emerges, willing to maim and terrorize to break his opponents' spirits, and the contest turns darker and more personal. Darrow's success comes wrapped in secrets, and he must keep hiding his true nature while the pressures of leadership, guilt, and rivalry mount around him.

The endgame of the contest arrives, and Darrow's buried past catches up with him. Cassius learns that Darrow killed his brother during the entrance ritual and, consumed by grief and betrayal, turns on his best friend and nearly kills him in single combat. Broken but not beaten, Darrow is nursed back and returns to wage the final campaign. He confronts and outmaneuvers the sadistic Jackal, whose hidden identity is exposed: he is the son of the ArchGovernor of Mars, and Mustang is revealed to be that ruler's daughter. The web of loyalties tightens as Darrow closes in on victory while trying to protect the alliance he has built and the secret at the heart of it.

Darrow wins the Institute, emerging as its top graduate after a year of blood and cunning. The victory reshapes his enemies and allies alike: Cassius is lost to him as a friend, the defeated Jackal is now known to be Adrius au Augustus, and Mustang, whose real name is Virginia au Augustus, is his rival's sister and the ArchGovernor's child. In reward for his triumph, Darrow is claimed as a lancer by ArchGovernor Nero au Augustus himself, giving the Sons of Ares exactly what they wanted: their hidden agent placed among the highest Golds of the Society. Darrow has climbed the first great step toward power, carrying his grief for Eo, his guilt, and his impossible secret with him as the larger war for freedom begins.

Darrow wins the Institute's year-long war game, but at great cost. His closest friend, Cassius au Bellona, is manipulated into discovering that Darrow killed his brother Julian during the entrance ritual, and Cassius nearly kills Darrow in a duel before Darrow claws his way back to the fight. Darrow also defeats the sadistic rival known as the Jackal, who is revealed to be Adrius au Augustus, son of ArchGovernor Nero au Augustus and brother of Mustang, whose real name is Virginia au Augustus. Named the top graduate, Darrow is taken into ArchGovernor Augustus's service as a lancer. This is precisely the foothold the Sons of Ares sought: a Red disguised as a Gold, placed among the most powerful rulers of the Society, poised to climb toward its center and tear it down from within. Darrow's growing bond with Mustang is now shadowed by the knowledge that her family are the very people he has sworn to destroy, and that his whole existence rests on a lie he must never let slip.
