Riley Cruz (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A 24-year-old goat shifter tending bar at the Sundowner after leaving theft and her former pack behind. Riley keeps her distance from local alpha Max Volkov, but word of a valuable magical dagger tests her resolve to remain hidden and law-abiding.

Max Volkov (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Kansas City's local alpha, whose pack includes werewolves. Riley keeps her distance from him.

Dez (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Riley's friend and a recently turned vampire with strong cybersecurity skills. Dez is a regular at the Sundowner.

Hopper (Minor)

Appears from the start

Riley's hostile manager at the Sundowner.

Carl (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 2

Riley's former alpha in Santa Fe, whom she deceived before fleeing eight years earlier. The possibility that Carl may still reach her helps make the dagger seem like a source of escape money.

Damien Creed (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 3

A vampire power broker in the Southwest and the target of Riley's last major theft before she escaped Santa Fe. Riley took a fragment of the Alatyr Stone from him on Carl's orders.

Callie (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

Riley's friend, a costume designer and makeup artist who is also a powerful but relatively inexperienced necromancer. Callie is investigating how to banish a demon active in Kansas City.

Mira (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 4

The necromancer representative on the local supernatural tribunal and Callie's trainer. Mira brings greater experience to the effort to understand and remove the demon troubling Kansas City.

Raul Garcia (Minor)

First appears in chapter 5

A Santa Fe private investigator whose telephone number Riley finds hidden in Volkov's desk. His presence raises the possibility of a connection between Volkov and the dangers Riley left behind.

Helen (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A powerful witch who helped shelter Riley after she arrived in Kansas City as a teenage runaway. Helen is among the experienced practitioners Callie approaches for help with the demon threat.

Craig Ward (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A tribunal enforcer assigned to provide backup for Callie's work on the demon problem. Craig joins the network of allies responding to the supernatural danger in Kansas City and supports Callie's investigation.

Levin (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

A Santa Fe hustler contacted through Riley's old criminal connections. Levin dislikes Carl and offers to locate a buyer for the stolen dagger in return for a percentage of the sale.

Zepar (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 11

The demon summoned by Callie and bound to the human world through her. Riley recognizes Zepar as the hooded stranger who directed her attention to the dagger auction, revealing his interest in the weapon.

Benny (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 16

Riley’s occasional karaoke companion, a werewolf who works as a police dispatcher routing calls involving supernatural activity. Benny is assigned to watch Riley while she stays at Volkov’s house.

Aleksei (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 17

Max Volkov's brother and the person whose invitation is required for entry to the Compound in Romania. The group must secure Aleksei's cooperation before it can pursue the imprisoned source connected to its investigation.

Santiago Cruz (Minor)

First appears in chapter 18

Riley's deceased father, according to the account of the fire that killed her parents. The official report names Santiago but records no survivor, deepening the mystery of why Riley has no government records.

Amelia Cruz (Minor)

First appears in chapter 18

Riley's deceased mother, as identified in the official account of the fire that killed her parents. The same record says that no one survived, while searches uncover no official trace of Riley's own existence.

Nash Mitchell (Antagonist)

Also known as Wade Mitchell

First appears in chapter 23

The human former Green Beret who owned the dagger and has been monitoring Riley in an effort to recover it. His service-related tinnitus appears to interfere with vampire compulsion, making him difficult for Dez to stop.

Mateo (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 24

One of Carl's werewolf subordinates from Riley's Santa Fe past. Mateo uses surveillance of Helen's home to force Riley's cooperation and demands the artifact she once stole from Carl.

Bea (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 25

A witch in the Kansas City circle Riley regards as family. Bea learns that Carl and Mateo are threatening the group and joins the others in preparing defenses rather than abandoning Riley.

Alice (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 25

A member of Riley's chosen family among the Kansas City witches. When told of the threat from Carl and Mateo, Alice stands with the group and helps plan protective measures instead of distancing herself from Riley.

Janice (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 25

One of the Kansas City witches who form Riley's family and support network. Janice responds to the danger from Carl's pack by joining the group's preparations to defend themselves.

Fred Parker

First appears in chapter 28

The highest bidder from the earlier dagger auction, offering one million dollars. After Levin's arranged sale collapses, Riley contacts Fred Parker and sets up a direct exchange in Oklahoma City.
