A mediator in her mid-twenties, back at the Junipero Serra Mission Academy in Carmel, this time on the staff as its guidance counselor. She still sees and speaks with the dead, though she has not had to do much about it lately, and she is engaged to Jesse and planning a wedding. Years of handling hauntings alone have left her with the habit of dealing with a problem first and mentioning it to nobody, which is the habit the book tests.

Alive. The nineteenth-century ghost Suze grew up with is a living man in the present day, working in medicine and training as a doctor, and engaged to Suze. He has built a modern life without losing the manners, principles and protectiveness of the century he was born in, and he is not willing to be kept out of anything that concerns her.

A shifter Suze has known since she was sixteen, now grown, wealthy and back in Carmel with business interests in the town and an interest in Suze that never went away. He knows more about what people like them can do than anyone else alive, and he has always been willing to use what he knows as leverage.

Still the principal of the Mission Academy and still a mediator, considerably older now, and the person who gave Suze her job. He has known what she is longer than anyone.

Suze's oldest friend from her school days in Carmel, now working as a journalist, with the same instinct for what is really going on and the same willingness to dig for it.
