In short (whole book)

In this early prequel story, a young Harry Dresden, working as an investigator for the Ragged Angel agency under the detective Nick Christian, is hired to find a runaway girl named Faith and return her to her affluent parents. When they locate her, the job goes wrong: the girl falls into the hands of a troll, a genuine and deadly creature of Faerie, and Harry must use his magic to save her at real risk to himself. In the process he comes to suspect that the home Faith fled was itself the true danger, and that the people paying to retrieve her are not the innocents they appear. A police officer, Karrin Murphy, arrives in the aftermath, an early step in Harry's wary relationship with Chicago's law. Harry rescues the child and, troubled by what he has learned, refuses simply to hand her back to be hurt again.
